Bernadette is a very nice restaurant with a great dining experience. The starters were phenomenal! The food dishes I ordered were okay, my husbands were very good. Service was attentive, friendly, and helpful. I hadn't tried many of the dishes I ordered prior to my visit to Bernadette.

grilled halibut
Sarah P.

Our waitress, Sarah, was friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. The place is clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. The light fixtures are unique, and the bathrooms are high-end. The dishes are very expensive and small. I had the grilled halibut for $48, and it did not come with any sides. My husbands $18 glass of wine was five sips. I am glad we tried it, but it's "one & done".

Bone marrow

I was underwhelmed with this place! I will start by saying the service was incredible, it's very clean and comfortable. Bathrooms were even spotless. The main reason I'm rating it lower is for the value. I think the price point is far too high for what we got. Two of the cocktails we got were great while the other two were lacking flavor ($18 each). The apps were lacking in flavor too (though the bone marrow was good and worth it). The mains were good but very small portions. We got a side of broccolini that was good but only a few pieces for $10. Overall I think it's just too overpriced.

Last night at Bernadette's in Salem felt like stumbling into a chic Parisian hideaway--warm wood tables, softly glowing candles and just enough bustle to feel lively without ever getting loud. My daughters and I slipped in for a pre-Mother's-Day treat, and from start to finish it delivered every bit of that special-occasion magic. Kampachi Crudo Delicate slices of "tuna" (here, Kampachi) bathe in a bright pea aguachile broth, dotted with razor-thin fennel ribbons and topped with briny pearls of caviar. Each forkful was a masterclass in contrast: cool, spring-bright flavors cutting through the buttery fish, all balanced by a whisper of citrus heat. Roasted Bone Marrow This was hands-down the richest toast of my life--in the best way. Two cross-cut marrow "canoes" arrived slick and shimmering, nestled atop house-made sourdough. A spoonful of silky shallot confit and a scattering of cornichons lent a vinegary snap that kept the marrow from feeling too indulgent. Spread that glossy treasure on crisp bread and you've found pure umami nirvana. Niman Ranch New York Strip + Pommes Frites The steak arrived medium-rare, its crust seared to a perfect mahogany and sliced to reveal a glowing rose-center. A jus-au-poivre cut through the beef's natural richness, while a handful of tender ramps and enoki mushrooms nodded to the season. But it was the Pommes Frites--paper-thin, golden, dusted with sea salt and served alongside a garlicky aioli--that stole the show. I could've eaten them all (and almost did). Throughout the evening, service struck the perfect note: knowledgeable without ever being overbearing, happy to make wine suggestions and always on hand with a warm smile. Bernadette's isn't just another pretty menu--it's a thoughtfully curated dinner that feels both effortless and utterly memorable. Highly recommended for anyone looking to celebrate something--or simply to eat something spectacular.

Salem has a lot of good restaurants. Now it has a Great One! Bernadette is new to downtown, but the owners are not new to Salem as they own one of the other high end eateries here. And they clearly know how to craft an amazing menu, create a fabulous environment to enjoy the food and hire some pretty terrific staff. Our server last night, Oscar, was friendly, knowledgeable about the offerings from both the kitchen and the bar, and made appropriate recommendations based on the several queries we all had. He helped elevate the experience from just eating out to dining. The vibe here is definitely upscale, and it's not aimed at the typical Salem/Halloween Tourist crowd. If you're looking for that special occasion place, this is it. If your looking for a place to make any meal a special occasion, Bernadette is also it. You won't be disappointed.

Dined here Friday, January 17th. From the moment we walked, everything was absolutely perfect. Unique cocktails to start, and lovely not too expensive wine with dinner. My pictures ended up being a lil fuzzy but everything was seasoned to perfection. Our server was gracious and attentive. They noted the hubs birthday and offered a lovely sorbet to celebrate. While it is on the pricier side, I can def see it as a place to go celebrate!

A true gem in Salem! From the moment you walk into Bernadette, you can feel it's something special. The space is warm, inviting, and effortlessly stylish--exactly the kind of place you want to linger. Every detail feels thoughtful, from the way the staff greets you like an old friend to the balance of comfort and creativity on the menu. Literally one of the best burgers you will ever ever have! The food? Absolutely outstanding. Each dish bursts with flavor and care, clearly crafted with both skill and passion. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in sourcing ingredients and presenting them beautifully, without ever losing that sense of comfort that makes dining out so memorable. What really sets Bernadette apart, though, is the atmosphere. It's more than a restaurant--it's an experience. Whether you're on a date night, out with friends, or just treating yourself, Bernadette makes you feel at home while still delivering something elevated. Salem is lucky to have Bernadette, and I can't wait to go back.

A pork chop from heaven.

My server was amazing but the food was not. The price for the size is what is really driving the 3 stars though.

April 17, 2026 I…read morewent with my parents tonight to the Adriatic Restaurant (Washington Street), Salem, MA. We've started having dinner out twice a month and this was the most recent experience. I had gone online to the NORTH SHORE DINNING PAGE on Facebook and asked people about their experiences with the restaurant in the last two days and here's what people said: "great, tender meatballs", "great eggplant parmigiana", "very good experience". .... And what we found out is that they were right. Those things were all true! Now.... As to what we ordered: I got the grilled octopus. It was the only partial miss on the menu. Arugula just doesn't make a very good sauce and it was a pretty bad base for what would otherwise might have been a great appetizer. My mother got the Caesar salad. It was good. It's a hard thing to screw up. My father ordered the meatballs. They were amazing and delicious - just like Facebook promised. The tzatziki sauce was good. Maybe not as good as mine, but good nonetheless. So dinner.... Mine was the Chicken Saltimboca. It was so good that I'd bathe in the sauce they make with it. I loved eating forkfuls of the chicken with bites of the mashed potatoes. That was really luxuriant. My mother had the Eggplant parmigiana and she wiped out the entire plate. She loved it. My father.... Beef tenderloin tips. Maybe cooked slightly too much, but delicious. He wiped out the plate. To drink.... I was out of the hospital and recovering from brain tumor surgery, so I had the hard cider (3.5% BV), my father had the Peroni (Italian) beer, and my mother had the Bud light. I tasted the Peroni and liked it very much. The hard cider had almost no sweetness to it. It was dry as a higher end brut champagne.... Which actually set off the meal really nicely. My tastes weren't clashing and that was good. Our waiter, Sean, was great. Ask for him! We left a $32 tip, so the bill came to $197.85

I had a delicious espresso martini and for apps I tried the arancini and picked off my sister's caesar salad. They were both alright, but the caesar could've used more dressing and I didn't love the flavor of the arancini - just a bit bland. For my entree I had the shrimp scampi. This also really lacked flavor, and I was yearning for more tomatoes. The service was great and our waitress Leanna was attentive and super sweet. They had clean bathrooms and ample parking out front and around the block. However, the food wasn't memorable, and I don't think I'll go out of my way to return.

I've also never had anyone tell us they do not like the restaurant once they try our recommendation. It's a small, cozy, dimly lit restaurant located at a corner near MGH. Street parking may be tough but there are garages around. The hospital garage may be a bit pricey; I believe the restaurant can validate for another garage nearby. Our must order items from the menu include seared foie gras (5/5), duck magret a l'Orange (5/5), escargot (5/5), french onion soup (5/5, and steak tartare (4/5). I love using their bread to dip with the escargot and eat with the foie gras as they do not come with carbs. During my last visit, I tried the boneless short ribs Bourguignon, I felt like it was a bit dry. I loved the potato croquette that came with the dish though, creamy on the inside with a crispy exterior. The meat did not fall off and melt, maybe it was just that one day. I will stick to ordering duck as my entree as it has never failed us and the cook and flavors are also supreme. Creme brulee is always great to end the meal! Service is alway is great, every server we've had were always attentive. We were given free champagne one year when we told them it was our anniversary too! Definitely a restaurant I will always recommend and visit every now and then.

Probably highlight of the meal 2. French Onion Soup. 1/5. Not good at all. Very watered down. The broth was basically lightly seasoned water. Cheese topping lacked flavor. This was very disappointing for a French restaurant. 3. Mussels. 4/5. These were fresh and came with standard sauces. 4. Coq Au vin with pasta. 3/5 Came out hot but seasoning felt off and didn't quite it the mark. Service was good and it's in a cute spot. But Overall, disappointment with our food and wouldn't repeat.

Upscale…read morerestaurant with linens, etc. We chose to dress up based on reviews but seriously most patrons were not even casually dressed as some wore sweatpants and/or sweatshirts, and this was Saturday for dinner! I think anything goes but would suggest at least nicer jeans. Since this was our travel day; I wanted a nicer place that we could eat light or heavy. 5 Corners Kitchen jumped out as it has inhouse made pastas (and usually several pasta dishes to choose from). Inhouse made pasta is more common on the East Coast (scarse where we live on the West Coast). I made a reservation in advance (week before) and glad I did. Guessing reservations required! We arrived for our 5pm reservation right when they opened. There was a line outside but when they unlocked the doors (reminded me of a scene from The Bear) most immediately went to the bar to eat and drink. Most tables are set for two people with a few for larger parties (6-8 people). Date night type place with more table turns. At 5pm, there were very few diners but by 515pm the place was packed and remained that way with other parties coming in (the pictures show before others arrived). Interior is very modern yet cozy. Great vibes. Lots of fun lights and accents all around. Tables for two are small but our food arrival and eating was just the right pace. I noticed the table next to us was having difficulty with space (but not other tables). They ordered several appetizers (vs entrees) and wanted them at once. The server was great in asking when we wanted our courses as the order goes in all at once, the kitchen just needs to know when. The food was outstanding! We are Foodies so we know and seek out grrat food! Because we traveled all night and day, we weren't too hungry, so we skipped on an appetizer. They have great options and we wished we had more space but decided we were going to have dessert instead! Very nice selection of wines by the glass and/or bottle along with many beers including a few BA beers, and.a full bar for what looks like very creative cocktails! My husband ordered an NA Ale and pleased with his selection. I ordered Camille tea! The food! We started with slitting a wedge salad and sure glad we split it! Just one-half was plenty big! The heirloom cherry tomatoes were excellent, the dressing great, and the inhouse bacon pieces were OMG so good! A meal in itself! For entrees, I ordered the Mushroom Rigitoncini. Lots of different types of mushrooms along with Black Truffle. The sauce was absolutely amazing! The homemade pasta, excellent and done just right! It had Arugula for the herb (vs Basil) that gave it a nice accent flavor. Excellent choice! My husband ordered the Salmon dish, served over a warm salad with a nice light vinaigrette! Fresh fish and excellent dish. Small menu with ten entrees plus a special.to select from, but honestly hard to choose and they all are so tempting. Hoping to be able to return while we are still.here this week! For desert we ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Again,.so hard to choose but their Gelato is inhouse made and this one came with a scoop of Vanilla Gelato, like ordering two desserts! We barely had room but enjoyed every bite! Excellent restaurant! Service was wonderful and our Server, Declan, was exceptional. Very attentive. Post-COVID, life looks a little different. I've changed jobs and moved to another town, so it's no longer the easy drop-in it once was. Still, I make a point to come back at least every few months. What hasn't changed is the consistency. This remains one of the most reliably excellent restaurants in the Boston area, and still one of my all-time top five--while others that once held that spot haven't quite held up. One thing has changed, though: the Ghost of Mary. Scotty, the former bar manager, created what's still my favorite cocktail of all time. When he left, the drink left with him (by mutual agreement), and while he generously shared the recipe with me, I've never quite managed to recreate it at home. It was clearly meant to be made by the expert. That said, Sycamore hasn't missed a beat. The space is still as comfortable and quirky as ever, the food remains consistently excellent, and the current bar program is in very capable hands.
