Dr. Berkson was totally disinterested. He actually asked me why I was there and was plainly irritated when I said I was just there for a check-up/skin cancer screening. (Aren't we supposed to see a dermatologist periodically to screen us for skin cancer? Isn't that the kind of thing that pays his bills?) Then he refused to examine me at all. He looked at nothing below my neck--just pointed to my face and kept repeating that I should wear sunscreen. I was done in under 5 minutes. This was not the first time I'd seen a dermatologist for this kind of screening, so I know what a full examination usually entails. This did not even come close to what I'd experienced before. I was way overdue for an exam and I did not get one. Just one lousy excuse for a doctor charging me for the privilege of spending a few minutes with him so that he could recommend sunscreen. read more

Dr Berkson saved my skin! Since my first appointment I have felt really cared for by Dr. Berkson and his team. After struggling with cystic acne for over 15 years, I found Dr Berkson, and 6 months later my skin was and still is the best it has ever been. I made an appointment because he was on the Blue Cross Blue Shield provider list. I took time off work and biked across town in the heat and was running 8 (!!!) minutes late due to the fact I went to the doctor across the street by mistake. As I crossed back, called them that I was running late and they said I would have to reschedule. This was under 10 minutes of being late. When I made the appointment I was not informed of this strict policy. Normally I am a very punctual person, but come on...less than 10 mins? I mean how many times do I wait HOURS for doctors, sitting in a paper gown in a cold room? I was hoping to see the dermatologist because of a spot that looked pre-cancerous. Now I will have to wait months to get to see another doctor. I am definitely NOT going back to this doctor. read more

I went in to see Berkson because I had a skin condition on arms and legs. When I was taken to his exam room it was all but an exam. Berkson did not lay hands on my arms or legs to get a closer look. He remained seated about five feet away and made a visual diagnosis and prescribed a lotion. Time in exam room: under two minutes. It turns out the diagnosis was wrong...as well as the prescription lotion. Weeks later when the condition worsened I went to another derma. He determined that the lotion was thinning my skin on the arm because the medication was too strong. When I received the invoice, I mailed it back with a note indicating my complaints and concerns with refusal to pay. NOTE: If Berkson would have at least laid hands on arms to get a better look I would have deemed it poor service but still would have paid. I strongly advise not seeing this doctor. Better yet, see Dr. Rani at 850 S Wabash. She diagnosed correctly and gave proper medications. read more

What a difference a new referral makes! I made an appointment 10 days ago. It was for 1:30. I showed up at 1:15. I filled out the paperwork and paid my co-pay, with a check (no credit cards/lost a star). At 1:29, I was called to the exam room. At 1:30, Dr. Berkson comes in and introduced himself. At 1:33, Dr leaves and asks me to put on the gown. I am very nervous. I am not a skinny girl, and it is cold in there. A few minutes later, he comes back, with a female secretary (big sigh of relief from me), and he examines my 8,000 freckles. NOT ONE is deemed to be "walking melanoma" like Dr. Slice and Dice said. Dr. Berkson takes note of my scars and notices some areas on my face, just to keep an eye on. He does not take notes, but seems to remember. He went to UCLA and Northwestern, so he is smart. He is also very calm, kind, and listens. I like that in a doctor. At 2:04, I am out the door, in my car and headed to Marshall's to go shopping. No more wasting the entire day at Dr K's office. Oh, and Dr Berkson has free travel sized samples of soap and lotion as well as a GREAT magazine rack, but you won't have time to read them. You will have to steal the $5 copy of Food and Wine just like I did. I hope they did not notice. read more

Aren't ALL explanations for the cause [and opinions about the treatment] of rosacea simply "theories" described online and elsewhere--including in doctor's offices? So it seems it would be a bigger disservice to the pharmaceutical companies to which so many doctors are beholden if those doctors were to endorse any theories that didn't involve glancing at their patients from eight feet away and immediately prescribing medicines manufactured by those pharmaceutical companies. read more

Tried for several days to make an appointment and always got their answering machine stating the office was closed, even tho the hours stated on their greeting say they should be open. After three days of this several times a day, I gave up. Bad, bad first impression. read more

I like Dr. Berkson very much. He is very professional and I have been going to him for years. Both my boyfriend and I have gone to him for moles and skin problems and have not been prescribed anything that was "brand" except for one skin product that was new and cutting edge. read more

I was hesitant to come here after reading other reviews, but my visit was fine! I went in with a facial skin issue, fearing it was psoriasis, eczema or worse. They were able to fit me in next day, the wait was short the day of my appointment, and Dr. Berkson was reassuring and thorough. He answered all my questions and was nice enough to give me free cream samples so I didn't have to pay for any (and they seem to be working thankfully!). read more

Dr b is the only doc who cleared my acne i had since i was 10. Im 38. He was one of only two doctors who prescribed accutane.

While Dr Berkson and his staff are very friendly I didn't feel like I had a thorough evaluation. I want in to have him examine a spot on my face and also asked for a body scan for moles etc. I was not impressed with the very quick assessment which lacked attention to detail; which I value in a full body scan. I mentioned some redness on my face and he said "yeah it's probably some Rosacea" but offered no suggestions or treatment. Would not recommend this MD. read more

I've seen Dr. Berkson three times now (as of yesterday), and I must say I've been consistently impressed with him. He carefully listens to my questions and concerns, and never makes me feel rushed. That in itself is just as valuable as it is rare in today's world. He doesn't mind when I ask a dozen questions about a dozen things (skin/hair related of course), and has always been upfront about treatment options and expectations. Each time I've seen him I've noticed significant (if not huge!) improvements - from treating my dermatitis, to a small cortisone injection for a small cyst in my earlobe. Healthy skin is really important! Having a dermatologist that you trust is part of having healthy skin! I have already recommended him verbally to several people, and here's my chance to broaden the scope. Don't hesitate to make an appointment if you need help with your skin! read more

I'm a Family Doctor myself and was looking for an independent, no-nonsense, traditional dermatologist. That is exactly what Dr. Berkson is. He is both an internal medicine physician and a dermatologist, which gives him extraordinary insight. His front office staff got me in to see him within a week- which is not common for dermatologists in Chicago (I know, I refer patients to them all the time). My appointment started exactly on time, and I was in and out of the office in under 20 minutes. Dr. Berkson is very knowledgeable, personable, and professional. I'll definitely be back! read more

Extremely rude receptionists. Walked in for my first appointment with Dr. Berkson and as I handed them my credit card to pay, they looked at me like I was stupid and said they only took cash...like I should know this since you told me on the phone when I made my appointment, knowing I was a new patient? Alright, fine. Went downstairs to the ATM and came back up with their cash. Went in to see Dr. Berkson for oh, I don't know. 3 minutes? 5 minutes TOPS. Didn't even care to come close and look at my face, which was the problem location. Just smiled, nodded his head, and wrote some scripts from across the room. Didn't explain anything or seem to give a shit. Terrible business ethics and never ever going back. read more

I made the appointment for a cyst removal on my back. After looking at the cyst Dr. Berkson said that he was not able to take care of this. Instead he referred me to a different dermatologist. I was at least hoping to have a good examination aside from this since I was a new patient and had not had any recent skin examination from a dermatologist. Unfortunately Dr. Berkson only looked at me without my shirt on for less than a minute. I mentioned a mole on my back and told me I should get that looked at, which I was completely taken aback as to why he couldn't offer more insight to what I should do to treat my mole. I also have several spots from past sunburns that he overlooked and everything happened so fast that I didn't even have the chance to ask about acne treatments or anything about some past scarring from pimples during puberty. I was especially surprised that he didn't really ask any patient history about me either. I called his office after the appointment when I had time to think about my experience to see how much this "exam" would cost and they said it would amount to 300 dollars for maybe 10 minutes of sub par service. This experience was so bad that I'm actually sorry for my insurance and I'm also worried that I'll have to actually pay more on top of my co pay if they don't cover the cost of a specialist. To throw more salt on the wound the other dermatologist he referred me to also has a pretty terrible yelp review so I don't even want to use the referral. read more

Well, I don't have a lot of experience with dermatologists, and he did seem to conduct a basic check of my skin for any moles/signs of cancer. However, he really didn't go beyond that, and I was hoping for more of a consultation regarding skincare. I had to bring up my acne to get him to offer advice on it. I probably would have rated him a 3, but I deducted a star because he made a point of bringing in a female employee of his while he did the body exam (made me think he had had some complaints for inappropriate behavior and was obligated to have a female present in the room).
