I used Roy's services for several years. He works quickly and I found his price reasonable. However, there were two issues that eventually led me to stop using his services: 1) Poor security around sensitive information: Roy doesn't use a secure portal for tax documents like many services do nowadays. Instead, you either email your documents or leave them at the cafe he owns with whatever barista happens to be behind the cash register. You also pick up and sign for your tax return at the cafe that he owns, not directly from him, but with the barista. This always made me uncomfortable but I tolerated it. The last straw was when he asked me to send my bank account information over email for direct deposit. When I said I wasn't comfortable doing that, he asked me to drop it off at the cafe (with the barista, not him), which I wasn't comfortable with either. 2) Unwillingness to research new tax law In 2025, I installed a solar system in my home, and wanted to receive the 30% solar tax credit that was going away at the end of the year. During 2025, I emailed him to ask several question about eligibility for the tax credit, leveraging my tax liability to maximize the credit, etc. He responded that he couldn't answer any of my questions because "the law could change at any time" and he wouldn't "receive the tax program until early January and solar credit won't be ready until late January." At the time, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but now I know that the law was clear then, and he just didn't have that level of expertise. Then in 2026, when it was time to file 2025 taxes, he wouldn't answer what tax form needed to be filled out for the solar credit or what documentation I needed to provide him, despite my asking multiple times. Fortunately, I found a new tax preparer who already knows everything about the solar tax credit, knew exactly what form needed to be filed, what documentation I needed to submit, and could easily answer all the other questions I had. So in my experience, Roy has some gaps in his knowledge and is unwilling to even admit to those gaps, much less proactively go do some research to learn so he can help his clients. read more

I used five other tax preparers before finding Roy (two of those left the business; the other three weren't good enough for me). My tax returns are very complex. The least competent tax preparers have charged me the most, because they spend lots of time on inefficient approaches. Roy charges less than average, because he's efficient. I've occasionally needed to prod him to look more closely at something, but I always get the impression that when he looks at something carefully, he figures out how to handle it. read more

I went to Roy to see if he could help me file an amended return. Instead of talking to me about my taxes, he started asking me personal questions that creeped me out. Then he said he couldn't help me when I asked him to stay on topic about my taxes and that he would charge me way more than I could afford. Afterwards, I went to another tax service preparer and they charged me a reasonable rate to file an amended return and kept the conversation extremely professional. A helpful and personable accountant: I had to cold call a tax accountant today about a house sale in Richmond and reached Roy French. He could have brushed me off or told me he'd charge me to answer my questions, but he didn't. He listened to my somewhat drawn-out scenario and gave me very helpful answers. (Two other offices told me they'd charge me a $150 or $195 rate for a similar "consultation.")
