The instructor seems to know his craft and there are definitely some solid basics you can take away. That said, the class leaned pretty heavily into the sales pitch, which is always a bit of a red flag for me. It felt more like a "get in, get what you need, get out" kind of place. If you're curious, it's worth checking out for the fundamentals, but I wouldn't recommend getting too comfortable. FIRST - the other teachers Cam and Ann, who are no longer at Berg, are AMAZING. they're kind, knowledgeable, and compassionate. GREGORY BERG, on the other hand, is a money-chasing, unreliable, narcissistic teacher, who does know many things about acting. On occasion, he will share gems that give you insight. However, he doesn't really care about you unless you're a star. He name drops all the time. He is late to his coaching. I, once, had a session with him where he did a complete no show. He feels like a car salesman to me, and it saddens me that someone with that kind of knowledge of the craft would use it so carelessly and without thought for his students. You feel like a CUSTOMER at his school, not a part of a community. read more

I was wary about starting up at another acting studio, having been fairly traumatized by teachers in the past. One of the things I love about Berg is he feels like the anti-dogma teacher, giving you many ways in, around, and through acting hurdles in order to come, not to your most authentic self as the character, but rather your most intriguing self as the character. It all starts with the actor and ends with the actor, but at the same time is always about the audience's experience of the actor (which, let's face it, is how we get work--by being interesting to the buyer) The question when choosing a teacher is always: is the teacher right for you. This is the place. I found Berg through the recommendation of my manager. From my first audit I knew that this place and Berg in particular are different. I had fallen out of love with the craft and needed a place to light a fire in me, and Berg did that. Adrian, who organizes the audit and runs the boot camp, is one of the smartest people you will meet. His way of teaching the studio's technique is really approachable and direct. (He's East Coast, so he talks like he's got somewhere to be, but just the freakin' sweetest.) The Berg. Where do you start? What a larger than life character. Berg's capacity to teach great acting comes from his ability as a great actor. So many LA teachers don't know anything about acting, so how the hell do they teach it? His meticulous hunger for creativity never ceases to amaze me. His passion for the craft is stunning. His notes are always insightful, constructive, succinct... and usually funny. I've been a working actor for almost 20 years, and graduated from one of the top 5 drama schools in the world. I say this not to brag, but to provide context. I wanted coaching for an audition. Berg had recently reached out to my manager hawking his coaching business and classes, so my manager sent me his name, but he hadn't had any clients use Berg yet. I was drawn to the fact that he had taught at one of those top 5 drama schools, so I took a shot. A portion of the coaching (which was done over Zoom) was spent doing the most basic of scene work. Asking me to circle important words, break down the scene to beats and action verbs. Stuff that trained actors would already know to do, and that is a very intellectual approach to acting, which is great when you've booked the job and have weeks/months to marinate in the role, but for an audition tape due the next morning?? But here's what really turned me off... MOST of our time was spent talking about his classes... Berg selling me on this studio... It was a MUST for me... My career will take off if I take classes at this studio... That many of his students' careers do... But to act fast! Because spots were filling up quickly!... He also kept getting up and walking around off screen (!), clanging around in the kitchen, getting something to drink, then moving his laptop to the living room so he could sit on the couch... Berg also loved to name drop the only two people of note he's taught, who are on his website. I was wondering if ALL his students had soaring careers, why he didn't have more students to brag about... I got nothing out of this coaching session. I had sent my manager a tape before the coaching, and one after the coaching. My manager sent the tape from BEFORE the coaching. Berg seemed much more interested in getting more of my money than in actually helping me get this job. Btw...I am not opposed to classes. I actually found a pair of acting coaches who have made a crazy difference in my career. But they don't have a website, nor do they take out ads. Their classes thrive purely through word-of-mouth. Bar none, the best acting school in LA. I've been studying for going on a decade now, all through the city, and Berg is the best of the best! I feel like a lot of acting schools/teachers in LA border on being unethical because actors are an impressionable and frankly naive group that are easily milked for their money, but Berg is the GLOWING exception. There is an intense focus on finding what works for every person without any of the ego-stroking BS that I loathe from a lot of schools. Berg is legitimately insanely accredited (heard of The Sound Of Metal?) and after taking classes with him on and off for like... 6..? years, I can't advocate for him enough! He's a total sweetheart, beyond educated in the craft, hilarious, completely insane, and desperately devoted to teaching. I kind of get the vibe from him of like... A hermetic monk that has attained enlightenment but language can't properly express the pathway so he's just scrabbling for a way to convey knowledge to other people and the burden of not being understood is slowly drivin' him insane ------ Annnnnyyyyyywayyyyy his drive is to teach acting and nothing else and his passion helps keep me passionate for acting day in and day out! The most practical and the best acting studio in Cali Hi Actors, Bergs studio is the best I have come across, I moved to southern California from Northern California, and let me tell you, this studio takes the cake. I attended acting classes in los gatos and San Jose, San Francisco, but none one these studios can hold a candle to Bergs, you say why, very obvious, first hes from Yale, secondly hes an actor, third and most importantly, he knows what acting is all about, acting is becoming that character with your life experience, not becoming a CW actor who just crams lines and illustrates the lines. I paid stupid amounts of money to studios who barely get people a role after 5 or 6 years. You really don't learn anything since the basis of their teaching is so wrong..I had no idea what objective was, inner and outer and imaginary obstacle was and super obstacle, I was taught everything was monosyllabic, I was so bored with my acting class in los gatos, until I came to Berg's studio.. He has boot camp classes to learn how to take an audition, breathing techniques, business aspect of the business, I can go on and on. This class has made me fall in love with acting and my goal. If you have kids and want to start them early, don't wait any longer, Berg is patient with kids and really helps them shine, Hes a teacher who puts himself second to his students, he does not fake or lie, but gives constructive critique and helps you achieve that persona which is needed to be a Meryl Strep, Jodie foster, or Daniel -Day Lewis. I've been taking classes through Berg Studios for almost a year now and have loved the experience. As someone who had improv experience and wanted concrete guidance on the craft of acting it was the perfect place and I feel very lucky to have found it. My first teacher was Tessa Auberjonois, whom I took for about 9 months. Tessa really helped get me off the ground as an actor, and instilled in me the importance of knowing your script like the back of your hand, making decisive and creative choices, and using your voice in the most effective way possible. I always felt encouraged and challenged, and noticed real growth in my time in her class. What I also dig about Berg Studios is that you have a lot of opportunities to learn outside of class- I have taken several super valuable workshops that have opened other acting doors for me. You can also audit any class you want for free as long as you are enrolled in a scene study class, so I have sat in on Gregory Berger-Sobeck's classes and learned a lot in the process. I have taken two of Berg's on-camera workshops and recently started his online class and have relished the experience- he is tough but I always feel inspired and come away with different ideas of how to approach the craft. The bootcamp class with Adrian LaTourelle is also a helpful crash course on the various concepts and techniques they teach at the studio, as well as guidance for the audition process. They give you a packet that details the Yale Technique, and it gives you a concrete system for acting that lets you see performance as an ongoing process and harness the subconscious in making creative, spontaneous choices rooted in the text. read more

By far the best (classical) training you'll get in Los Angeles. I have played musical chairs with various "renown" acting schools in LA; Berg Studios takes the cake. Since Berg is both a Yale alum and a current faculty member, you have access to top tier training. You will be exposed to an unmitigated acting method, the same available only to those attending Yale and those that once attended (e.g., Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong'o, Frances McDormand, Angela Bassett, Sigourney Weaver, Paul Newman, among many others). More importantly, Berg is a heartfelt educator. Many money-hungry acting studios in LA are led by bitter actor wannabes. These said coaches allow their personal frustrations and insecurities get in the way of a selfless and stimulating education. Don't let any "coach" violate your childlike and unadulterated love for the craft. This place is simply the best. I studied here for a year, mostly with Berg and improved dramatically in many facets. The most important thing I gained from here was developing my own process. They give you the tools to discover choices and bring to life a character that is based in truth. Berg also focuses on using your imagination and the way he teaches you to do that will unlock a lot of doors to your artistic mind. Berg is by far the best teacher I've had. He demands good work and if you work hard, you will most definitely improve. The other teachers in the studio are just as great, I also studied with Adrian and Cornell. Both are really fun and they both, with their own uniqueness, help guide you to bring your scene to life as well help you with your process. The great thing about this place is that they try to get you to diagnose yourself within your work. Not to judge yourself, but to evaluate your choices in a healthy way and always seek to explore and discover, never plan. Berg also helped me start to learn Shakespeare and after taking other workshops around town, I have to say he is the best so far that I've taken. Especially the use of imagination and allowing yourself to come out of the words. What's also great is he has other teachers from Yale and Julliard come and do workshops, which are very helpful. I took Andrew Wades workshop and I would highly recommend that if you're into Shakespeare. I'm not currently a student because I'm doing an internship, but I will be back. This is a place where there is no specific time limit to be in class, it's just a place of growing and as long as you are willing to work, it's always a great place to come back to.
