First off, let me say I have been coming here for years, and think Dr. Benson is a wonderful doctor and loved his old staff. However, his office staff now can be terrible and make you feel awful, and unless you are persistent you will not be seen, and will not be given results of labs unless you call for them or have them drawn before your appointment. My most recent experience: I made an appointment with the office 5 months ago because I have been getting sick quite a lot. The person answering the phone seemed irritated and annoyed with me, and even made irritated huffing noises into the phone because I didn't know what to say the appointment was for other than to find out why I've been sick 6 times in the last 4 months. I eventually asked to get a full physical with labs because she wasn't listening to me and talking to someone else while I was trying to explain my situation. The first physical available was 5 months out, so I requested some labs before then, mentioning a few specific symptoms I wanted checked out. She basically told me my concerns were unfounded but made the appointment anyway a week later, again sounding very annoyed. I came in to the first appointment in Feb. early to give my new insurance card and again was treated like I was irritating the front desk by trying to give my card and pay. I was told nothing and sat down to wait until 15 minutes after my apt. time, when I was weighed and taken to a room. While I was in the waiting room, the two women at the desk were loudly discussing patients as well as their own personal lives. They were bad mouthing patients loudly in front of me, as if I were not even there. It sounded like the patient in question was a regular pain in the butt hypochondriac, but still, I think it was highly inappropriate for them to loudly talk about the phone call one of them had with her right in front of me. It makes me wonder if they do this with patients in the office as well? It seems like a breech of confidentiality to use someone's name and then talk about their conditions. So, I go into my room and wait a while longer (Another 10-15 minutes because they were busy) and in comes Dr. Benson. He listens to my concerns, makes appropriate responses, reviews my file, and makes some suggestions. He has labs drawn then and sent out, and says that my symptoms could be one thing or many things and that it may be hard to track down the cause. I was told they would contact me if anything came up in the blood work. I left, and in doing so, overheard the front desk women talking about another patient loudly and rudely. I never heard back, so I assumed the blood work came back normal and waited for my physical. Flash forward 5 months (yes I started this review in February and waited until now to finish): A few days before my physical I received a packet in the mail telling me to have my blood work done at Quest diagnostic 1-7 days before my physical. I did so (which took about two hours on a Monday at 10am) the day before my appointment. I went into the office a few minutes early and was greeted nicely by the front desk. The other desk woman came out and they discussed their personal lives again, as well as another doctor's office, but no talk of patients today. I was called back to my 9 am appointment on time, weighed, treated nicely, and put into a room to change. Dr. Benson came in after only a few minutes and did a thorough physical exam. He again listened to my concerns, reviewed my chart, reviewed the blood work preliminary report and the report from Feb. and took the time to go over the results with me. He was able to rule out many causes of the symptoms and make suggestions as to what could be going on. It is very likely that three factors were adding up to my symptoms, and he gave me methods of helping those three factors to test out to see through trial and error if those were indeed the culprits. So far I believe Dr. Benson was dead on in his diagnosis, and I feel very relieved. He is a wonderful doctor who truly seems to care about his patients when they come in to see him. I left feeling better about the office, and then came back and read the start of my review before finishing. All the feelings of how to front office treated me like a burden came back to me, and I realized that this review needed to be published. I know a few other people who come to Dr. Benson (including family members) who have experienced similar things with the front office and Dr. Benson. I give him 5 stars, but his front desk I'd give 1 star. Your doctor's office is where you go when you feel awful, and if they make you feel worse about yourself and belittle you, it is a terrible experience. Yes, Dr. Benson makes up for them, but the fact that when I get sick I every time stop and decide if I really feel bad enough to want to deal with his staff, and sometimes end up in urgent care a few days later because I decide no, that is not good! I have been with Dr Benson over 30 years BUT His office has fallen apart the last several years. Do not expect to get test results with out calling his office which is impossible to get through to. Not proactive with your health care and preventive medicine. Difficult to get through for appointments and a complete failure on follow up. I think this office may have aged out. I love Dr Benson; have been seeing him for 10 years. But while old fashioned service in the exam room is a good thing to have, old fashioned communication in the front office is not. Today, Friday, I called three times between 10:30 and 11:00am - well within stated office hours - and got an "after hours" recording that will NOT let you leave a message. I need to reschedule an upcoming appt and I don't have time to call every day within the exceedingly narrow office hours hoping that maybe today will be the day they actually pick up the phone. If this was a one-off, okay, maybe, but this is another incident in a string of similar communication fails in the last few years. Like calling to follow up about a relatively urgent out-bound referral, being told "the person who does that isn't here," leaving a message for her, a week passing with no response, calling in again, being told "the person who does that isn't here," leaving a message AGAIN, another week passing, calling in, repeat, repeat, repeat. In comparison, my dental office always picks up during business hours, also allows voicemail messages to be left, provides an email address they happily respond to, and recently initiated text exchanges for rescheduling! It's 2019. There's a lot of great doctors out there, with modern communication practices and conscientious staff at the desk. I really like Dr Benson, but I'm one more incident like this away from transferring somewhere else. read more

About ten years ago I moved from Germany to the USA. One of the important things that I missed was the good health care and caring doctors in Germany until recently a friend recommended Dr. Bendon. Few days before my appointment I received a referral from Dr's.office for a comprehensive blood test. The day I visited Dr. Benson"s office he had the lab results and took his time to explain each item to me. I was amazed with their organized system and intensive care that I received, nothing left unsaid or not checked. I recommend Dr. Benson to all my friends, and co/yelpers. This was my first time to see Dr. Benson, and the visit went very well. The receptionists were kind and helpful. Sign-in process was easy, with minimal paperwork, and I only waited in the waiting room about 5 min. I waited in the exam room for about 5 min as well before I was seen by Dr. Benson. Dr. Benson took time to learn the history of my problem and take thorough notes on it. He explained different solutions to my problem and was not hurried to move on to his next patient. I've been a patient since I was a child. In fact, my father, and grandfather are both patients of Dr. Benson. He takes care of three generations of my family, and I fully intend to have my children follow in his practice, so long as he is around. I love Dr. Benson, and his office. Only down side, is that he is in such high demand, sometimes, it can be hard to get an appointment. I know that this is the cost of doing business with a great physician- but for those seeking a new doctor, this can be a challenge. But, I must admit, it is well worth the wait. I just turned 29 and decided to get a physical for a baseline. Decided to go with Dr. Benson because of the reviews. I called a few months (2-3) ago and did my physical today. I thought it was odd but I understand that he allows the people who are sick to be seen first. So I am okay with that. The staff were very nice and polite, as was Dr. Benson. He took his time explaining my results and provided useful information. He broke down my bloodwork results, line by line and explained to me in detail what each item meant. This man is amazing. I went with my parents to get a second opinion for a condition my father has. Right away he identified three of my father's medications as a potential culprit for my father's condition... things my father's primary physician failed to recognize. Dr. Benson is the man. My entire family are patients (there's six of us). I loathe doctor and dentist appointments, but when I really need to go, his office makes this a quick and painless experience. I have had him as my MD since I needed one after I became too old for the pediatrician. I've not had one single problem (big or small) with Dr. Benson or his office staff. Not one! He is very nice but I waited AT LEAST 30 minutes EVERYTIME I had an appointment! On what was to be my last appointment, I waited 45 minutes and then left. I couldn't believe it! It was my first appointment since I had a heart attack. I then received a letter from him that he was no longer going to be my doctor because I left. What a joke! It was to be my last appointment with him and after waiting 45 minutes, I couldn't take it any more. I am supposed to try and stay calm. I absolutely love dr. Benson, his office staff on the other hand could use an attitude adjustment. As well as maybe having an answering machine? There's a 4 hour window in the am to call, they take a 2 hour lunch, then a 3 hour window. Granted that's plenty of time... Half the time they don't answer the phones, so you have to sit there and call over and over. I don't know about everyone else, but I actually work a 9-5, I can't sit there and call constantly to make a simple appointment. Other than that, Dr. Benson himself is an awesome, caring, respectable doctor. I would definitely recommend him. EDIT- they suck. They're rude. They need to get their shit together read more

I went in to get a blood test. He sent me to the lab and said he'd call when he got the results. 2 weeks passed and I hadn't heard back, so I called. They had the results but never bothered to call. I prefer to get my healthcare from providers that keep their word and update patients with results promptly so they don't wait and worry. read more

Dr. Benson makes himself available through an on-line service where you can request test results, and send general email messages. He is a good person, and easy to communicate with. I have been going to Dr. Benson for about ten years. His staff are usually pretty friendly and efficient in handling any confusions or scheduling problems. Dr. Benson is really a great doctor. He never rushes through an appointment. He listens to my every question or comment. He is genuinely concerned about his patients' well being. Dr. Benson is a family doctor in the finest sense of the word. Dr. Benson is indeed a busy physician, but I personally would not want a doctor who seems to have too much time on his hands and too few patients. I have never had to wait an inordinate amount of time, but it would be fine if I did. I also liked the fact that he actually orders the lab-work before your appointment so that he can discuss the results rather than do the physical, order lab, and then call you again for a follow up. Dr. Benson is one of the most caring, compassionate, and intelligent Doctors I've ever known. My whole family has been seeing him since I was an infant, so I love that he has my and my whole family's medical history on hand. His office manager, Jerri, (I think that's her title), has also been with the practice for as long as I can remember and she is fantastic! She is always friendly, happy to answer any questions I may have, and relay messages to the doctor for me. No matter my concern, they find the time to fit me in for an appointment. I'm probably one of those few people who actually enjoy going to the doctor, because I trust him with my life and being in such great hands puts me at ease! Extremely upset I haven't been seen in over a year and I been dreading to call them cuz they were very rude everytime I came last time and never called me for any results. We'll called today and what do you know very rude and have a huge attitude problem from both office staff, such a shame my family finally convinced me that this is unacceptable and to seek another office. I tired to make an apt today and ended up in tears after the phone call and being hung up on and having them argue with me about them not having an attitude which you shouldnt be arguing with any patients and you should be willing to help ppl that r seeking medical care. I did like Dr Benson but this is just awful being treated that way I do rmemebrr last time I was seen they were talking about their personal lives as I see other ppl have put. First off, I would like to say that I would give Dr. Benson a 5 star rating. He is such a wonderful doctor and could not be more caring and attentive. I have been going to Dr. Benson for over a decade now and loved his old staff. But his current staff (two ladies) are so terrible that I am dropping it down to 1 star. They act irritated by virtually EVERYONE who walks in the door or calls. As you are sitting in the waiting room they actually discuss patients and talk terrible about them. While I was waiting my turn they proceeded to talk about each patient that came in or called negatively!!! They did not seem to care that there were people in the waiting room that could hear them. In addition they put people on hold while they discussed their personal life. I actually overheard another patient while I was there mention to Dr. Benson that his staff was rude and was surprised at his response. He did not address the patients concerns at all or seem to care! Dr. Benson, do something about your staff!!! You are too good a doctor to be pulled down by unhappy and just plain rude staff members!!! At the very least.........Train them that it is not appropriate to be rude and talk about your patients especially while other patients are in the room!!! You are the best Dr. and because of this I continue to go to you but I actually dread the few moments that I have to deal with your staff!!! If you know what you have, he is a nice enough guy. But if not, beware! My husband will write his review later, but basically he threw us out of his office for me saying, "I feel like nobody cares" He is, I guess, pretty sensitive to that comment. My husband had been sick on and off for about 7-8 months. Well my husband ended up in the hospital, after seeing this man and telling us it is probably is a pulled muscle in his back. It ended up being an abcess with over 1000cc of fluid in it. He was hospitalized just in time, for over a week. read more

He always makes us feel important by spending time discussing all our medical needs and concerns. *He is one of the last, true "Family Practice" Physicians.* We recently retired to Arizona and can find no one here that even remotely compares to Dr. Benson. So we fly back to San Jose to see Dr. Benson for our yearly physical exams and major issues.
