Choosing a barber shop is, for some, a prospect more nail-biting than picking a new doctor.
Ben's Barber Shop is a vintage barber shop - barber pole and all. Fred Cropsey and his brother Joe have run the place since 1975, when he bought it from the former owner. Fred is a certified master barber, and lives up to the title. This was my first visit, and I received a perfect haircut. Fred used a trimmer without any guards, and worked with a quick efficiency and subdued sense of humor as he made small talk with me and other patrons.
One man asked, "Isn't this your slow period?" It was 2PM and there were three walk-ins during the 10 minutes I was in the chair. The shop clearly does a bustling business. There are two chairs from which the brothers cut hair, and a scattering of comfortable waiting chairs in the warm environment. And as Fred commented with a crooked grin, "There's a bar two doors down - it's our overflow waiting area."
I'll be returning - Fred made another fan. read more
