When I wanted to donate a sofa and matching loveseat that were in very good condition, I contacted…read moreHabitat and left an email message. I received an email back in a reasonable amount of time considering how busy they must be. The person in charge of donations asked me to send a photo (which is totally understandable) before pick up was approved. Shortly after, an appointment time was set for pick up. I had the furniture placed in the garage as requested. The truck came within the designated time, and furniture was taken to the truck efficiently. I would say it was "professional operation." When it was picked up, one of the two men said, "This furniture is in great condition. Thank you for your kind donation and for thinking of us." I was happy to donate to a good cause and will continue to do so. Three years ago we donated oak kitchen cabinets when our kitchen was remodeled. I saw that they were sold for $550. I was pleased to help an organization with such an outstanding mission.

This review is for ReStore, the store front for used furniture and recycled fixtures and appliances…read morethat Habitat for Humanity runs in downtown Schenectady. Habitat itself is an outstanding organization and does great work. The H for H offices are located on Pearl, so this should be recategorized in Yelp as Home Furnishings / Retail Furniture, not Contractor Services. First off, hours: Thursday 10-6, Friday and Saturday 10-3. Tip: if you come early on Thursday, you'll have your best chance of getting pick of the new stock for the week, since they're closed the other days but continue to collect donations. So this is basically a thrift store specializing in furniture. It's everything you'd expect from a place that runs on donations. The stock is not by any means new or in style, but they do a good job in filtering out items so you don't have any dirty or unusually smelly items. Some of the items I looked at were broken or had significant flaws, but they for the most part seem to have filtered out truly unusable stuff. They do have a little bit of everything, and the repurposed fixtures (including doors and windows) are probably the cheapest you'll find anywhere. I had a little difficulty at first getting appropriate help - there were many volunteers but they had to find the chief guy in charge to do pricing for me, and they kept asking me the same questions about the items I picked out (as to whether they belonged in a set or not, like that matters for very used furniture) - but it's hard to quibble with volunteers on the basis of the service. They tried, even if they weren't as organized about things as they could be. Be patient with this sort of thing if you go in. If Design on a Dime ever does a Schenectady show, they'll love it here. I have a lot of fun speculating about previous owners of many of these items. (I really got a hoot about the five-piece living room set I saw on my most recent visit, where there was a built-in Stereophonic Console in the corner table unit. 1966, here we come!!) I also urge you if you do go, round up on your purchases and throw the extra money into the donation kitty. This group builds houses for people, and does it in a way that brings the people who will live in the house and own it into the building process. It may be unfortunate that this is needed, but it is, and doing a little shopping here can help this effort while helping yourself. One caveat: from the blank expressions I got when I asked if they check for bed bugs on the furniture upholstery, I'm going to guess that they do not do their own screening here. So given the reality of bed bugs and older pieces of furniture, I urge you to check for yourself. This is true for any used furniture these days. Update: adding a fourth star after multiple visits - the stock really does zing in and out (well, some of it) and Thursday mornings are definitely your best bet. The second floor, which I neglected earlier, has miscellaneous small fixtures, lamps, plumbing stuff, and so forth.

I started out late last year 2022 getting quotes for asbestos pipe insulation removal at my house…read moreand the first company I called was TJ Bell, since they are local. Dan came and he explained exactly what they were going to do and what my responsibility was in different situations of asbestos removal. I thought he was pretty thorough and was almost set to hire, but there were other things I needed to check out and also I wanted to get a quote from somebody else to compare. Fast forward to this year, and I thought that I will give them a call once again earlier this year, as there was another section of asbestos pipe insulation I needed asbestos removal. Knowing nothing about asbestos removal and the process, I was initially focused on just getting the worst sections done that were crumbling and not adequately wrapped, because of what I thought the cost would be and because of necessity in removing the worst pieces. He did give me a detail of how much it would cost in quotes, with the largest quote detailing getting rid of everything at close to $7500, not including air monitoring. It seemed like a lot of money given the area of pipe insulation that needed removing, so I wanted to check around other places this year in order to compare. When I called him this year to find out if the quote still were good, and availability to do the job, I thought that Dan was strangely kind of rude in his responses to me.. when I first called him again, he responded to a standard greeting of "Hello Dan how you doing?" with " I don't even know how to respond to that" in response. The conversation didn't get much better from that, as he sounded very annoyed. Who does that? Who knows, maybe he thought I was screwing him around, but I trust you not, you can't screw around with things like asbestos and getting capable people to removing it as well. I thought it was kind of argumentative, not very business like and a somewhat rude way to treat a prospective customer. It nonetheless signaled a red flag to me. It was then I knew that I better look elsewhere for a better responsive contractor, maybe a better price and better relationship with the contractor. I found somebody not too soon after that was just as meticulous and even saved me two grand to get rid of everything.

I needed to have a professional do mold remediation (in Clifton Park, in Upstate NY) when I found…read moreBlack Mold was embedded in Sheetrock under a tankless hot water heater which I didn't know had a very small leak. I called Rainbow International since their website indicates they are certified and licensed in Mold Remediation. Rainbow (Albany NY) came in, told me the Black Mold they saw in the Sheetrock would require cutting out that section of the wall, and they could in fact eliminate the mold problem. They charge $2500 to cut away about 10 sqr ft of wall(&fix repaint), spray antifungal into the wall and rug around it(didn't even cut away rug to just check under it). Thinking they solved the mold problem as they promised, I stopped running ultraviolet light (contain mold growth/spread). After that I became extremely sick, and had to go to family's place in NYC;where a doctor found he needed to prescribe 3 antibiotics and warn continuation of a problem might require hospital intervention. After getting sick, I called Rainbow. They acknowledged that the illness could've been from continued mold problem, but then blamed this on my "having a lot of things" (I took out of the walk-in closet when I first found the mold)! As the later Mold Inspector said, their job under NY Law was to have a full inspection done BEFORE starting the estimate & work; if for nothing else to professionally determine the extent and details in the Mold Remediation work needed to have the work successfully completed in a thorough manner (that wouldn't leave the issue outstanding afterwards). Rainbow (2 weeks ago) said they would call me back about any next steps they could possibly take to fully solve the problem; I still haven't heard from them after I sent them the Mold Inspector's report along with the "Air Analysis" sent from a laboratory that examined the air samples from the apartment (containing the mold they were hired to remediate)!! Do not hire this company. It is my understanding this isn't up to minimum standards required by NY Law for licensed individuals. After I reported them to the regulatory state agency, they called me to threaten me with a charge of"slander". I gave them the answer Judge Judy once gave;an absolute defense to such a charge is that I told the truth (as I am here also). They told the NYS agency they only worked on less than 10 feet of Sheetrock, your their bill to me said they worked on 30 feet of Sheetrock. If it was an "error", of course you can't depend on their use of "due diligence" in billing and work. Otherwise, which I suspect is more likely the case, they are just plainly dishonest!

Naturally, I was extremely concerned because of what I have heard about the dangers of mold. I contacted Home Advisors and they had Rainbow International contact me. My initial contact was with Laurie. She explained things to me and offered to give me a free estimate. Laurie even emailed me the laws about mold removal. Matt met us at our cabin and after carefully checking things out, informed us that our problem was very minor and that we could take care of it ourselves. We appreciate his honesty and feel very fortunate that we contacted the right company. We will certainly always recommend Rainbow International Restoration to anyone who asks.
