We have lived on Daniel Island, SC for over seven years and in that time, we have hired dozens of…read morecontractors for various projects and maintenance tasks. With a few exceptions our experiences have been generally positive but John Syrjala Jr. is far and away the best contractor we have ever worked with. The primary project was to replace a wooden staircase with a brick one. I was expecting that building a brick staircase would be significantly more expensive than a wood replacement but Mr. Syrjala's bid was actually less than some of the wood-based bids. Without reservation I can say that Mr. Syrjala's prices are very reasonable! Mr. Syrjala is an amazing, professional mason who works carefully and takes no shortcuts. The demolition of the old staircase was accomplished quickly, there was no mess and he carted away all the old material. He then dug and poured a cement footing, despite it being a relatively small area he used enough rebar to support a major structure. He found brick that was a perfect match to our 12-year-old home and did a beautiful job of building the stairs. During the two weeks he worked at our home there was never a time that there was any mess and he left the area around the project site looking better than before he started. The stairs look great! We also had Mr. Syrjala complete a hardscape project for us and construct some foundation piers, this work was done to the same high standards and at very reasonable cost. We recommend Mr. Syrjala without reservation, and are confident that you would have an equally positive experience.

John matched the brick colour and bricks quite well considering the age of the original! John was professional, prompt and took a lot of pride in his work. They gave us a work date, called to confirm and arrived on time. They were polite, professional and when finished cleaned up. Ryan reviewed his work and took pictures. While doing that he discovered a spot where evidently they had covered a mole hole and the mole came right up thru the newly poured concrete. No fear, Ryan fixed it straight away. It looks wonderful, I am so pleased! My neighbors have complimented the work It changes the whole look of the yard I would definately recommend!

He showed us a few different colors and patterns; my son expressed interest in the lighter color. On install day, my son was told they did not have the color he requested. Then owner (Ryan) was persistent with pushing for a darker color despite my son stating his preference of "what was available." Eventually, he agreed to use what my son wanted but not without resistance. The same issue occurred with picking the design. While I appreciate the work, as it does look nice. I did not appreciate his unbusinesslike attitude. He's getting a 4 star for the persistence in trying to get "his preference" on the project requested as that was a nuisance. Otherwise, his work is good. If there was a 4 1/2 star rating I would've given him that as the quality of the planter was great.

PAVERSCAPE RESCUED OUR DRIVEWAY…read more After a disastrous attempt by another company (which is now hopefully out of business) that ruined our driveway overhaul, we found PaverScape to completely redo the project. David Lugo and Amy Phelps run a fantastic company with employees, not sub-contractors. They have been in business since the late 1990's. They have completed such large projects as the Towne Center hardscape ("everything you walk on, sit on, and drive on"), to small residential projects as well. They were great fun to work with, and their entire crew worked to completely redo our driveway. The precision exhibited by their crew was impeccable. They are both engineers and artists. Our new driveway has garnered many compliments. They are in demand, so it might take a while to get to your project, but they are well worth the wait. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you hire PAVERSCAPE for your next hardscape, pool, or landscape projects.

The day the driveway was being sealed it began to rain and instead of stopping, the crew continued in the rain. As a result, the Polysand never set properly. The owner had explicitly stated that the conditions must be dry for the proper setting of the material. The next summer weeds grew through the pavers. We contacted PaverScapes to have them reseal the pavers. That summer came and went. All the while, they were promising to come fix it. The first excuse was he would redo it when he had another job in the neighborhood. We spoke to him when he was here in the neighborhood and he again said that he would fix it. That was in February 2024 and we still haven't had any resolution. We are still waiting for him to stand behind his word.
