Barbara also had Sjögren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease her doctors knew about, meaning her immune system could not fight infection like a healthy person's. She was HIGH risk. Yet two days after surgery, with an active spinal infection, she was discharged home with IV antibiotics and no medical staff to monitor her. In the hospital, nurses would have checked her leg strength and nerve function every few hours. At home, no one was watching. The infection grew and began crushing her spinal cord. She lost the ability to walk. Then she lost bowel control. These are textbook signs of a surgical emergency. Patients have only HOURS to get decompression surgery before nerve damage becomes permanent. By the next morning, my sister was paralyzed. Even then, she could have been saved from the worst of it, but she waited at St. Francis for nearly two weeks because no bed was available at the hospital that performed her surgery. Nobody treated her like the emergency she was. The window to save her nerves closed while she lay waiting. The paralysis became permanent. Pressure sores opened holes in her body at the facilities that followed. The infection they claimed the antibiotics would control spread into her blood. Sepsis. Her organs failed, her heart stopped, and on July 11, 2022, Barbara died. Her two babies, ages 5 and 3, lost their mother. I became their mom that day, and I watch them grow up without her. In my opinion, none of this had to happen. A two-day discharge with an active spinal infection in an immunocompromised patient was reckless. Every step after it was too slow. My sister didn't die from a back problem. She died from a system that stopped watching her. If you are considering surgery here, ask what happens if infection develops. Ask who monitors you and how often. Ask what the plan is if something goes wrong at 2am. Get answers in writing. Barbara trusted them. I will carry what that trust cost her for the rest of my life. She explained to us that why his is acting out this way - his self esteem was getting extremely low and instead of punishment and reprimands we need to change the way we treat him. Dr. Nikolskaya didn't spare her time to explain all the nuances of his condition to us and what was the best approach to handle it. My son visited her every week. After 2 sessions I noticed a big shift - he was less aggressive, in a month - "I want to destroy the world" behavior disappeared. Another huge help from her was addressing the issue at school. She wrote letters to the school on behalf of my son to ensure he was set up for success and recommended better approach to handle misbehavior instead of time-outs that undermined my son's self esteem which led a vicious cycle of him acting out because he felt bad about himself. The school agreed to implement the necessary changes and it shifted the whole picture. Instead of time outs he was asked to do some physical activity or do breathing exercises (that he learnt with Dr. Nikolskaya!). We haven't got any complains since. I'm so grateful to Dr. Nikolskaya! She goes an extra mile for her patients and work with love in her heart! She responds quickly to any questions and doesn't save time on explaining things, giving support! We had another opinion and they agreed with us on not moving forward with it. It could have made him in a more worse condition. We understand that he wants to help treat his patients but he needs to see his own health condition. He is not in the best health and his staff was not helpful and just there for a paycheck. It is a really sad office and for patients seeking his guidance that is no longer available or helpful to them. With deep regret, we do not recommend going to this office.
