I've been to this cafe several times over the years, normally for tea and cake, and have never really enjoyed their coffee or food menu. However, after today, we will never be going back and will be tell as many people as possible, especially people with dietary requirements, not to go here, as they do not care about that at this cafe.
We had a major, major issue here this morning as my partner is a Coeliac. His mum is gluten intolerant and she was there too. Both ordered GF toast. Partner's mother's came out fine. My partner was down the end of the table so couldn't see that his 'GF' toast was different from his mum's. In that it literally wasn't gluten free. When ordering, and when his plate arrived, all up he clarified THREE different times that his toast was gluten free. Each time, the waitress said yes it was. Only after eating most of his toast did we realise it was very different from the other GF toast on the table. And the only reason he could tell was because it tasted too good to be GF bread: because it wasn't. He had just been given normal wholegrain toast. We went and explained to the waitress that now because of this, he is going to be extremely sick for the next 3 days. Apparently the reason this happened was that the chef had just used up the last 2 pieces of the other GF order and "assumed low gluten would be fine". WHAT? How is that ok??? Why would you make any assumptions about people's meals? Even if this wasn't a major dietary issue, if you as a customer have ordered something, and the chef has run out, they should let you know. It is completely inexcusable.
All of this combined with many other things that went wrong including: I ordered bacon and eggs, and no bacon came out. I mentioned this and assumed the waitress was coming back with my bacon. She never did.
The poached eggs are just done in an egg poacher and are not very nice. I could have made better myself at home.
An extra drink came out that we hadn't ordered.
The coffee is rubbish.
The actual service has never been anything spectacular and today really proved that. We as a large family that all spent a decent amount of money there this morning (there were 8 of us), will NEVER be going back, and we recommend NO Coeliac's attend this cafe.
My partner is now going to have to take the next 3 days off work thanks to the chef not caring about people's dietary requirements, so thanks for that. read more
