We decided to go to this restaurant on a Sunday. My son is a foodie and likes to try different foods and restaurants. This was our first time at this restaurant. There was a line before being seated. Our wait was like 20 minutes. Not long at all. We were seated and menus given. Our waitress was very nice. This restaurant is busy with patrons. I ordered a mushroom barley soup, it tasted good. Soon after our food arrived. My son ordered Ruben Rachel , and I ordered BLT. My son enjoyed his meal and so did I. On my way out to pay I noticed the other patrons had pickles. I approached our waitress and I said I didn't know we could ask for pickles. Our waitress, I'm sorry. I said next time. Soon after we were leaving , the kind waitress gave me a jar of pickled tomatoes and she said it was on her. That was so kind of her. She made my visit to Ben and Irv so much more memorable.

This Jewish deli and restaurant has a very expansive menu. About 13 pages of menu that ranges from breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. It was crowded on a Sunday morning. At the entrance, you find the cashier register, display of rugelach, dessert, smoked fish. The dining area is on the left, mostly booths. Our waitress was attentive and kept on checking our table. A small plate of pickles was served on the table right away. The pickles consisted of two different kinds of small cucumbers. One kind is more pickled, the other kind that I tried looked more of a cucumber, very crunchy and juicy. I picked salmon with plum and sesame entree that came with 2 veggies and a soup or salad. The waitress told me a long list of veggie choices that I couldn't remember all of them. I chose broccoli and carrot. Salmon was decent, the sauce was a bit sweeter than I expected with about 3 slices of canned mandarin. I barely tasted the sesame. The baby carrots also had sweet sauce on it. We asked for challah bread. The waitress gave us a couple thin slices of challah and rye bread. Challah was very soft and fresh. French fries was crispy and seemed like it was not frozen.

Deli tray (pastrami on top looked OK but the rest was extremely fatty)

Pains me to not give 5 stars and was generous with 3 stars. I mean Ben and Irv's has been our go to place for trays, deli, brunch, breakfast, lunch, etc. forever, and ever. Over the holidays we ordered 2 trays for two different occasions. They are pricy and look nice but both trays were not as good as we remember. Too much mayo on the potato salad, bread was not fresh, forget the pastrami altogether as it was more fat than meat.. quite disgusting. Our first tray was the salad trio...that was better than the deli tray. However, the salads were bland in flavor...and the breads did not taste fresh with that either. I was sorry I ordered the deli tray as it was not a "wow" for our new years eve party. Several guest suggested we call Ben and Irv's to let them know the pastrami was a pile of fat. Pretty sad to hear that from your guest...especially since we paid attention to every detail making a perfect night for our party. We called the next day and we did get to swap out for corn beef. Didn't help us for the party but appreciated the swap. We now need a new place to get our trays as we don't want underwhelming food and bread that tasted like day old bread anymore. After all the bread can make or break a sandwich.

When I was a kid my parents jokingly told me "Never eat anything bigger than your head" - well glad we didn't come here when I was young! This is a typical New York City-type deli where one sandwich is bigger than the next. Looking around at other tables it was almost funny to see the size of all the different offerings. The menu is also gigantic running from Breakfast thru Lunch items. The Corned Beef Special was very large as well as very good. The Reuben, served open faced, was gigantic (although not very photogenic!) and delicious. There was enough to bring home half of each. Delicious Pickles were served along side the sandwiches. We got one of the last tables on a Monday at around 12:30. If you want to take home additional items, when you're seated there is a 1 page checkoff list to give to your server so that when you go to the cashier your take home order is ready to go. Fun - lively place.

Longstanding Jewish Deli Staple. One of the few places that have been around since my childhood and still has some great quality Jewish fixings. Some of my favorite items from here are the Matzo Ball Soup with noodles, Jumbo whitefish on a bagel, Lox on a bagel, and of course Smoked Salmon on a Bagel (If you have not tried Smoked Salmon on a bagel you have truly never lived). Came here with the Girlfriend Saturday morning and ordered an omelet with sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions, peppers. This dish comes with fried hash browns and choice of bread, highly recommend rye bread as I believe it is a very overlooked bread to make egg sandwiches in the morning and other great deli meats to build your sandwich on. Do not expect a five star upscale dining experience but rather a diner that knows how to make a dam fine breakfast and has quality Jewish pickles. They also have desserts to go that are nothing to balk at. I can recommend the chocolate chip muffins, they been making them for decades and still haven't gone downhill in flavor or yumminess. As always people SYOY!!!

Our not-so-great experience may have been a result of the choices we made, but I'm unsure. When you first enter you are in front of a nicely stocked meat counter, loaded with different deli meats. To the left is a dining area with a sign stating "seat yourself". The place is a bit dated with a nice casual vibe. We were greeted by a server who gave us menus and took our drink orders. Service was top notch. When it came time to order I asked how the pastrami was. Server replied "the best". Ok I'll take a pastrami sandwich, my wife a corned beef. The server also asked if we wanted pickles and tomatoes which I said yes. She quickly brought a little bowl, which I chopped up and we enjoyed. The sandwiches came out and these things could've come from a school cafeteria honestly. A minimal amount of cold, sliced meat along with a small bag of chips was unimpressive. What happened to the warm, thick cut, juicy meat sandwich you could barely get your mouth around that we expected? We looked at each other thinking WTF? No sooner did we notice a sign on the wall "NY style, thick cut pastrami and corned beef NOW AVAILABLE" Now maybe we just don't want to accept responsibility but shouldn't the server have asked if that's what we wanted? Anyway we left hungry and saddened by our $48 experience. Def not worth it.

But, if you appreciate family owned and operated businesses that do things as they have for the past thirty years, it is well worth slowing down to find it. We stopped in after taking the PennDot driving test nearby, in need of breakfast and coffee. Their all day breakfast sandwich sign in the window was most welcoming. No tables in the tiny shop, but a short wall shelf with four stools was all we needed. We each ordered a sandwich with variations of bacon, sausage and pork roll, egg and cheese on hard rolls. At $4.50 per, the price was right. Daughter took our order at the cashier post, while Mom worked the grill and dad brought in new inventory. All their Sammies were very good, with special mention to the rolls which were fresh and excellent. Choice of cheese helped, too. Liked them alot. If there was any shortfall, it was that the sausages seemed to be those precooked frozen jobs just reheated, rather than a fresh patty brought to life on hot steel. It would have been even better with the higher quality ingredient. Still, that is a minor nit in an otherwise high value morning meal. May they have another 30 years!

I've mentioned in previous reviews that this location is not my favorite, I still prefer the Warminster location and that was true until I had gone recently and they moved their bakery. We had spoke to others as well who live closer to doylestown but still go to Warminster because it's just better. Maybe I'll go to Warminster when I'm in a pickle but overall I think I am done with the altomontes store. It's sad to say but this once great small business is falling and I know it will still continue to pull all the doylestown locals with $ to burn. So if you're happy serving lesser quality at exuberant costs to keep this inflated mecca Italian wonderland - so be it. But the heart of this business and the quality that Mike started is no longer. You guys really need to start paying attention to your business and stop trying to keep grow grow growing and doing all of the stuff on social media if you're not going to invest in the business and quality of what you already have. Got overcharged for pasta that literally had prices posted over all the aisles by $1 a box which sure isn't a lot but it adds up. Especially when people are budgeting and buying things by a cost. And if you're doing that to me then how many other people? Just go change your signs if you're increasing costs! They also don't have the same desserts here that they do at their alto cafe which was sad to see. I also don't appreciate how the ordering has changed. As others have mentioned too the deli counter isn't nice and they don't want to cut you fresh items. I also was directed to the pre cut deli case when I just wanted fresh cut meat. I'm just tired of spending my good hard $ at a "small business" that isn't so small any more. And forget about the quality too - I know I've posted before but the quality is not what it used to be. It's obvious they care about the bottom line then making a good product. The specials are aborrhent as others have mentioned - which as I've posted in reviews is especially sad because you see a photo of the product online and get something that doesn't even resemble the item you ordered. Its a shame that all these changes are taking away the quality and what many people loved. Sometimes it's not always best to expand and shift the business to be trendy and social media centric. Sometimes it's better to stay small and true to the original quality rather than being out of touch from the people that have quite literally helped you build your business.
