I unhappily developed appendicitis - very inconvenient, as in when is it ever convenient? I went to the emergency room, checked in and was immediately seen by a nurse. The emergency physician entered right away and ordered labs and a scan to confirm his diagnosis of appendicitis. There was no wait time for either procedure to be completed. The physician returned, so quickly that I had hardly had time to get more comfortable (is that possible on an emergency room cart?" to say that the tests confirmed the appendicitis diagnosis. He said that the surgeon was coming to discuss options with me. The surgeon did indeed come just a couple of minutes later. We both agreed that surgery was my best option. Within what seemed like a couple of minutes, the operating room nurse came to get me prepared for surgery, including consent forms for surgery as I agreed to with the surgeon. She also told me that the anesthesiologist was setting up for my surgery. I met the anesthesiologist. I had the surgery so smoothly that it was a bit difficult for me to believe it was all done. My post-op care was great. I was pain-free. I was discharged with clear instructions and follow-up appointments in less than 24 hours after I went to the hospital.
