Should start off with admitting that I'm a Jiu-Jitsu addict. Further, I'm a small framed…read more30-something male. So visiting other academies can be intimidating. When traveling to Gaithersburg for work, I saw there was an academy reasonably close to where I was staying. Professor Noel was incredibly hospitable and encouraging for me to attend the classes. The academy itself is very clean throughout. The drilling or fundamentals classes were great in that they're both a good working and emphasizing drilling technique to perfection (drillers make killers as the saying goes). The advanced class that I attended immediately applied to something I've struggled with. With the requisite rolling, I found the students calm and technical with their sparring habits. Finally, the students themselves - across the belts - were friendly and inviting. I would definitely visit again as well as recommend Foundry Jiu-Jitsu as a place to train if you live in the area.

I was not trying on to getting back to competing again, but to feel that empowerment and camaraderie among who practice this martial art. Perfect for every skill level. Great and knowledgeable instructors. Wonderful introduction for children to teach them discipline, respect, and being gentle with self and others. I highly recommend this for everyone who wants to be in tournaments, self-defense and fitness.

The instructors (Chris and the two Seans) teach a very modern approach to BJJ. Instead of just showing a position, practicing it a few times, and then sparring, they have us play games to really drill in the position and how it connects to the overall picture. I have found this style to be extremely beneficial as a beginner who is still trying to understand the fundamentals. One of my favorite things about the gym is the strong sense of community. On Thursdays we go out to a Mexican restaurant after class and travel to other gyms. Whether you are new to BJJ or have been practicing for a while you'll be sure to find an awesome community and phenomenal training here at Groundworks. OSS!

Everyone was super friendly, welcoming and more than willing to teach me some new tricks. The gym owners themselves were very warm-hearted people and offered to roll with me as well which was tremendously helpful. Facilities were super clean and plenty of mat space for a bit crew to roll. Would give this place an 11 out of 10 and recommend to anyone looking for a place to train while visiting DC or even begin their jiu jitsu journey.

Max and Heather at Shoreline offer, by far, the best instruction and environment I've encountered. The other belted students are also great teachers whether it's a class, open mat or regular roll. I joined Shoreline because they offered what I need that most gyms don't have; a purple belt female instructor with Muay Thai/competitive background, a black belt Gracie Barra bred instructor, an emphasis on mobility and understanding of deep fundamentals, and month-to-month contracts. What I didn't realize I'd also be getting was nearly private instruction, a view of Brazilian culture and traditional BJJ history, and a home/family feel at a gym that I've never had in the other many gyms I've been a part of (I move every year). If the gym size turns you away, your first step in becoming a better fighter is adjusting your priorities. There is plenty of space for great rolls and drills, you have the undivided attention of an instructor to clean up any slop in your movement, and you don't have a loud kickboxing class in the background competing for your ears. Your development is individualized on an actual program of building blocks, not a "let's learn a random sweep today" mentality. The cues and details in their brain are insanely helpful, and I've had massive breakthroughs in my jiu jitsu and overall athleticism. Bad habits I was always allowed to make that would've gotten me submitted or injured are getting drilled out of me and I'm gaining a LOT of advantage with subtle adjustments. Ladies, this is your sign to join. Heather offers insights from a really formidable background, and it's important to have the perspective in reference to a female physiology. You CAN toss around men who are stronger and heavier; she does it all the time! You'll learn momentum, mobility, speed and balance caveats that level the field. I started solely for self defense training. They're happy to teach to those parameters, but also are active in competing and refereeing, and I now am addicted to rolling and seeking comps. Your path will be respected. Finally, they're also just so much fun! Training can be frustrating when you're eager, but I've never left a class without a massive smile on my face.

They really have an a friendly and supportive staff who have helped mentor me on my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey. I also like how they show the prices right there on their website instead of bait/switch like other BJJ gyms in the Annapolis area have done.
