I've been going to the Bellevue Arms since I was a kid. It used to be the place we would go for Sunday dinner when we couldn't be bothered cooking! It was fit for purpose back then - family friendly, simple menu, let you take home the leftovers for the cat (really, we used to go home with half a chicken for her sometimes.). These days though it's not my cup of tea. It's undergone a lot of renovation and as a result, can boast beautiful views over Belfast. The bar also seems to be popular. They tend to show a lot of football, so get a good crowd on Saturdays and Sundays. The reason I'm not a fan is because of a really bad dining experience I had there once. Basically I ordered the chicken and it came out frozen. Actually frozen in the middle. I understand a lot of places are guilty of not cooking things fresh these days, but this was too much for me and I haven't been back since. I've even missed a few family dinners because I just couldn't bring myself to eat in it again. Try it if you like. I know a lot of people who haven't had terrible meals in it, but certainly don't go on my recommendation! read more

My dad took us all to eat here a while back, and I went with an open mind as I'd never been there before or indeed, heard much about it. It was easy to get to on the busy Antrim Road, with lots of free onsite parking, and upon walking in my impressions were good, it was large, spacious, comfortable, and in a good position to make it a pleasant place to spend some time. We got seated without any issues and were given menus quickly. My pattern and my dad had a steak each, I went for the chicken fajitas, and mum had salmon. I was really looking forward to my fajita, chicken fajitas are one of my faves, but when my food arrived and I tasted it, the chicken was awfully dry, the cheese was rank, it was the cheapest of the cheap and the sour cream tasted really weird like it was off! Stomach turned to say the least. I didn't bother sending it back as I didn't want to have to wait for something else while everyone else ate theirs, so I just made do with the sides. The others thought their food was just ok which is why I give 3 stars and not two. I thought I'd maybe just got them on a bad day at the office, but judging by other reviews, maybe not! read more

The Bellevue. If you haven't set foot in this place, chances are you've seen it - it's the building that looks like it's about to topple off the side of the bridge as you head north on the M2. Should you venture off the motorway, you'll find a couple of nice bars downstairs. One is a small, shiny looking style(ish) bar, the other is a gloomier (in an OK way) affair, which has probably never been the same since the smoking ban. There are booth-like private tables along one side which are pretty cool. The restaurant upstairs, however... I'm fairly sure I would pay (some) money just for a seat by the window and a glass of water. Beautiful views over Belfast Lough and Newtownabbey below. Guess the Belleview's precarious perch on the bridge is good for something. The food, sadly, isn't as spectacular as the view... Last time there, I had horrifically overcooked duck. it was dry and hard to swallow - cooked to death. Also, it breaks my heart every time I'm presented with a side dish of microwaved cauliflower, baton-cut carrots etc... So many Belfast places, chefs, people just don't understand veg. Not a fan. This place is quite near where I live, and I've been to a few mad nights in it when I was a younger lass, but not recently and now I remember why. The other half and myself called in here yesterday as it was a really sunny afternoon and we decided to join the masses who were out enjoying the good weather. So, on our way out for dinner elsewhere we called here for a quick drink. I won't go back. I know it's a local bar, and I wasn't expecting perfection, but I was hoping for pleasant service, a nice atmosphere and enjoyable surroundings. The entrance was messy on the way in, there were abandoned drinking glasses lying about in weird places and as the football was on, the staff were distracted and not pleasant. We had to wait ages at the bar, not because there were lots of other customers, but because the waitress was chatting to her fellow waitress. Eventually we got served and got handed a pint of Guinness which had spilled over and the glass was SOAKING - I had to ask for a cloth, she didn't even think to offer me one. Plus the head on the Guinness was not good - it was massive (photo evidence). We sat outside then, and they had a guy playing acoustic guitar and had BBQ food on the go, which was definitely a good idea, and things were much more pleasant outside. I won't be going back, but if you want a basic boozer with no frills for the footie - this is the place. read more

Food was good but place is let down by service staff. With the exception of 1 member of staff the rest looked as though they had just been told their granny had died. My side dish of champ was stone cold, no not just cool but stone cold. When i advised waitress of this plate of champ was taken from my table and returned 5 minutes later withjout acknowledgement let alone an apology. Needless to say no tip was left, something i would fail to do about once every decade. read more

Met up here for a couple of drinks with a couple of friends. Haven't been here for a few years and I must say it's looking well and service is good, staff friendly and well priced drinks. Food and menu looks good-will have to try it for a meal. read more

What I love most about this place is the great views its' window seats offer of Belfast Lough. Absolutely breathtaking and a must-see for visitors to the city. The food is delicious, especially by North Belfast standards, which makes it 5* gourmet type. The desserts alone make this place worth a visit; they serve the most sumptuous Double Chocolate Fudge Cake ever! read more

The Bellevue Arms is one of my least favourite places to eat in Belfast. The last time we went (which was a while ago), we had booked a table, but when we got there they demanded that we hadn't and proceeded to grumble as they directed us to the bar. I would have left at this point but my family are to polite for that. When we eventfully got seated, we were waiting around for another 25minutes before we actually got served. Just when I was thinking it couldn't get worse, I had the great displeasure of actually eating the food! It was tasteless and dry, it seemed like it had been cooked that morning and left under heat lamps until some poor unsuspecting ejit like me orders it. I won't be back. read more

Contrary to other reviews I think The Bellevue is a decent pub. OK, so it's not exactly Michelin Star but if you're looking for some traditional cooking or fancy a bit of hangover food then The Bellevue is a great place to come. Sundays are great here. It seems to be the number one hot spot for all us lazy bones that can't be annoyed with slaving over a hot stove when someone else could do it for us! I've yet to have a 'bad' meal here. The last time we visited, around June time, we came really late in the evening, I was surprised we even got a seat. We must have just made last orders and boy was I glad 'cause I was starving. Fair enough, they only offered us main courses but that's all we wanted so it wasn't a problem. The waitresses were both attentive and cheerful, they talked away to us despite us arriving so late. (I know how this feels, I used to be a waitress and people arriving at 9PM is heart breaking!) My boyfriend ordered the 20oz T-Bone steak, I opted for the slightly smaller 6oz surf n turf. Mine was cooked to absolute perfection. I ordered it medium and it arrived just the way I like it. The scampi that came with my meal was the juiciest scampi I've ever had, and that's coming from a huge sea food fan. It was delicious! The T Bone came slightly overcooked (in my opinion) but he loved it, so win win. Meals come served with a selection of vegetables (normally cabbage and carrots, ah tradition, how you please me!) Others have already mentioned the view but I really think I should stipulate how beautiful it can be up here. The views over Belfast Lough are captivating. Particularly in good weather you can often see as far as bonny Scotland. The parking here is also excellent. It's very good for families, though they don't have disabled access for the restaurant upstairs (Something which they should definitely sort out!) I'd say any one who has had a bad experience should give it another go. Not only is it great value for money but it also offers a delightful variation of local flavour. read more

The Bellevue Arms is on the Antrim Road in Newtownabbey near Belfast Zoo. It has a great setting overlooking Belfast and is a real family favourite for lunch and dinner. It's not fine dining by any stretch of the imagination but it's a real crowd pleaser - huuuuuge portions with something to appeal to most people - roast dinners, burgers, pasta and stir fries. Actually, the biggest problem is coming here with people when you really do just want something light - even the salads are huge and come with side orders. Great value and worth a call in advance, especially at the weekend, to make sure you can get a table. read more

Boke! We had lunch here today. The chef must be a comedian as his food was a joke! We didn't expect much given the decor and the menu but what we received was just foul. With it bring paddys day I opted for Irish strew. The Irish stew was served with a Parisian loaf slashed over the top of the stew and foil packed butters on top which inevitably fell into the molten hot casserole beneath. The stew itself was a stodgy gravy with some cubes of tough beef, the odd shaving of carrot and boiled potatoes. Utterly flavourless until I added half a bottle of hp brown sauce. My partner had a home made burger which looked great but Tasted of nothing... No herbs or spices added to the cheap mince to flavour it. The service wasn't appalling but I doubt the waitresses ever crack a smile. No wonder the reviews are crap. Restaurants like this are stuck in a time warp! The chefs would do well to try a decent belfast restaurant and attempt to emulate the good! When I say chefs I mean cooks... There's quite a difference between trained chefs and people who heat up food. read more

This place has been hanging around forever it seems. I can remember going here when I was really young for a Sunday lunch and as far as I can remember the food was ok. The fact that I have only been back to in the last decade probably about twice indicates that it is certainly not on the top of my list when it comes to eating out. Recently it has improved with a bit of a revamp and certainly looks better on the inside and the food is of a decent standard. Don't order the salmon as its over cooked, skin stuck to the top of it, plastered with non tasting cheese, a greasy slice of bacon hidden under it. Was at the Bellevue for the 1st time in four years as i live in Bangor now. The Bellevue was also noted for good food and to me is still noted after a nice lunch. The restaurant could do with a bit of decorating as it seems a bit shabby at the minute. It is an old fashioned bar, like stepping back in time. This does add to its appeal. read more
