I had the joyful experience of visiting Belle Meade for the first time. The Victorian Spirituality event was such a positive, unique experience. I attribute my opinion to the following: the small groups who were moved in an organized, casual flow, the very informed, interestingly costumed historians relating a wealth of information paired with their entertaining personalities, especially Sara, Jackie and others and the uplifting atmosphere in the bar with such a wide variety of cocktails both before and after the program. This is a great activity for anyone who wants to enjoy a nice day out in Nashville away from the tourists and crowds. I took my parents when they came to visit and they loved it. The mansion tour was very interesting and our tour guide was fantastic. I forget her name, but shes a college student and she did a great job! One note: there are several sets of stairs on the tour and no elevators since it is an old building, so skip the mansion tour if unable to do stairs. You can't take pictures inside but it's worth viewing. The grounds and carriage house are worth exploring too. The wine tasting provided at the end of the tour was rushed and underwhelming. It was a quick splash of painfully sweet wine in a gift shop. I wouldn't rush back for the wine. read more

Plantation tour! Melissa was our tour guide!! Awesome, knowledgeable, informative and professional. My tour was Journey to Jubilee! This focused on the history of enslavement thru emancipation. It lasted 1 hr 30 minutes. Plenty of walking , and climbing stairs ( fyi ). Complimentary wine tasting of four wines . Walking the grounds is great exercise for some but can be challenging for others with disabilities or leg problems. Winery, cafe, and a restaurant is on grounds as well for dining options. Wow--Belle Meade has truly set the bar for wine tastings! We came for the wine and bourbon tasting. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted at every entrance, making us feel genuinely welcomed. The tasting menu was spectacular, and our sommelier, Maddie (Madeline), was both incredibly personable and impressively knowledgeable. She elevated the entire experience. Belle Meade is fairly underwhelming as both a property and a winery. The property is nice to walk around on (free) but I wouldn't bother doing an in house or segway tour again. Also, it's just so important we recognize that 130+ slaves were kept on this property. Any artifact or impressive construction on the property is a result of their labor. Moving on to the wine, I wasn't impressed. Their signature wines are super fruity. If you are to do a tour, take advantage of the tasting by asking to try special types you are interested in. Belle Meade winery was a great day trip! The winery is located on a beautiful site in Belle Meade very close to Nashville and has plenty of parking. We booked a food and wine pairing ahead of showing up. We checked in at the gift show when we arrived and they guided us to the wine tasting room. The wine tasting and food pairing itself was amazing! Our sommelier was very nice, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience great! Afterwards we walked around the property which is very beautiful! There's a flower garden, a game area, a distillery, a long walking path as well as the mansion which also has a separate tour. Great tour of the historic mansion. If you have knee problems, it's a challenge as there are stairs and you are standing the whole time. The property is charming, but no photos allowed, even with your flash off. BOO HOO. The whole tour ends with a wine tasting. I think you get about 4 tastes. Some of the wines were excellent. We visited Belle Meade Winery this weekend for the first time, and it was such a lovely experience. For starters, the winery is really easy to find and has lots of free parking. Everything is well labeled. When we checked in at the visitors center for our wine tasting, we were given a really helpful map of the grounds and instructions for how to get to the tasting room. Our wine and food pairing started right on time, and our sommelier Maddie was incredible! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and and gave great recommendations. We tried five wines paired with five delicious, bite-sized snacks. It's been over 24 hours, and I haven't stopped thinking about how delicious the food was. Following our pairing, we tried a wine Maddie recommended, then each purchased a glass of wine to enjoy while exploring the grounds. (The Race Day White really hit the spot!) The garden was super cute, and I enjoyed the area with free games like croquet and mini-golf, as well. We didn't check out the one mile walking trail due to the heat, but I can't wait to do so on our next visit. read more

If you like history and wine this must be a stop for you in Nashville! Belle Meade is more than just a wintery; it is an experience. I visited here two days back to back. The first day my sister and I bought a bottle of wine and walked the grounds. You are able to read posted signs to learn about the history. For an additional purchase, you can get tickets for a guided tour of the grounds and in the historic buildings. This winery would be a great venue for weddings and other events. They have a beautiful outdoor space for a ceremony as well as plenty of space for a party / reception in the stables & carriage house. Please note that the tasting room is small. To drink your glass of wine or bottle purchased you have to go outside to enjoy it. Make sure it's a nice day! Day two at Belle Meade was for the Food and Wine pairing. I don't know if I liked the food or the wine better! Rachel was our host. She is knowledgable about wine and provided fun conversation. I do not eat fish or duck. However, I ate my entire plate because it was that good! The foods truly enhanced the wines' taste. Usually food and wine pairings are with meats, cheese, and breads. This is way different yet way great! Make sure you read the description of your experience to understand what you will be tasting. If you have any food allergies, make sure you request AHEAD of time a few days in advance. The property currently consists of 15 acres but in 1807 it was 250 acres. The mansion was built in 1853. There are several ticket options. We chose the Mansion tour which includes the outside grounds, out buildings and a wine tasting . Our tour guide Emma was knowledgeable, friendly and encouraged questions. She did an excellent job of explaining the history of the estate and answering questions. The wine tasting was informative and we enjoyed 2 of the 5 wines. My mom and I went for a tour and wine tasting. We started with the house tour. We had a pretty large group so going from room to room took a little while. I was also curious about what information they'd share. Of course, they had very little to share about the 100+ slaves who lived and worked on the property. I understand why but it doesn't make it easier to experience. The wine tasting felt rushed and lacked the warmth I'm accustomed to feeling when having what I thought we be a fun activity. The pourers seemed annoyed with the size of the group and, for the price, this was the first wine tasting I've ever attended where we couldn't keep the glasses. I chose this activity because it's right up my mom's alley. She loves antiques, old homes and wine. So, for her, and especially after a few gift store purchases, she enjoyed it thoroughly. Maybe it was because it was cold and rainy and gloomy but I was a little underwhelmed. I was expecting to see more of the house and like the wines more. The home was lovely, and the tour explored several rooms. The guides dress in period costumes, at least when I was there. I came here on the 4th of July, so there was a high volume of visitors. To manage the crowd, they provided a tour guide for each room, instead of a single guide leading throughout the full tour. The other people on the tour weren't great, though. It was the first tour I'd taken in Nashville where no one else had questions... folks just walked through the rooms, and I find tours with more engaged folks to be more interesting. There's nothing the guide could do of course; I mention it simply because the guides did a good job even when sharing with people who, to me, seemed disinterested. But overall, the tour was just okay; I preferred other tours of old homes/civil war sites in Nashville. Something seemed to be missing here. I would have liked there to be more the enslaved people who lived and worked on Belle Meade; and I'd like to have heard more about the family history, the restoration, etc. The docent in the foyer provided information about the family's largesse and how it came to be, as well as the thoroughbreds from here. Guides in other parts of the home gave seemingly cursory information, like the room's function, whether artifacts were original or faithful to the time, and then had us wander the room. In some cases it felt like being rushed through. Upstairs, the woman sitting there told us what the four rooms were and let us look into them; however, this woman wasn't dressed up so she may not always be a guide. It could be that tour quality was affected by how crowded it was. Nonetheless, my ticket cost the same on this day as any other, so the experience should have been comparable. If this was representative of their tour--the humdrum info, or lack of and just having people look around--then it's the weakest of the ones I went on in this trip to Nashville (I also visited Belmont Mansion, Lotz House, Traveller's Rest, Carnton Plantation & Carter House). The wine shop concludes the tour, if you're interested in tasting, and that is included in your admission. I'm not sure if you can do a tasting without purchasing a ticket, though I don't know why they wouldn't want to get people's money if they just wanted to taste. I did do the tasting, though I hadn't planned on it since I don't drink a lot of wine, but I left with a few bottles of the blackberry and red muscadine wines. The grounds were lovely, but I left without wandering them further. If this had been an individual ticket (which cost $16 the time), I'd have been quite disappointed. Luckily Belle Meade is in the Battle of Nashville trio ticket along with Traveller's Rest & Belmont, which was $30 in summer 2014. The single ticket for Belle Meade cost more than tickets for each of the other two sites, so it's worth buying the trio. In 2014 the trio ticket had no expiration and you weren't required to visit all three sites on the same day, so if you might be interested in visiting two or three it would probably worth it to you. read more

My wife and I drove through Nashville while on a cross-country trip and were literally looking for any winery to just stop in at before getting to our hotel for the night. Well, it was a pleasure to find Belle Meade! First, it's not just a winery but a historical establishment - a former plantation. You need a ticket to the grounds to access the winery, which includes tasting a couple wines. If you want to taste more, you can pay for another flight, tasting, or glass. The price of the ticket plus the 2 tastings is well worth the price, in my opinion. All Belle Meade's wines are named for and offer interesting stories and vignettes of the winery's and plantation's past. I very much appreciated the way Belle Meade talks about its history while honestly acknowledging and not glorifying the enslavement that took place on the plantation. We liked their Iroquois Red and the American Legend red wines - both are solid wines to have with a meal and both have interesting historical stories behind them. Other wines were okay and not mind-blowing. Their most popular sellers are their sweet reds, which isn't my thing but I'm sure some folks love them - and that's what matters, right? If you like the wines or not! They've also got a bourbon tasting experience which I truly regret missing! They are dog friendly and all of the staff were sooooo wonderfully warm and kind to our furry buddy. We had an excellent experience here and are glad we came! I'd day it's best to come here when you have 1.5-2 hours to spare so you can really check out the full grounds. read more

A visit to Nashville visiting friends took us to a local historical landmark- best part? There's a winery! A grounds ticket gains you access to the winery which was our first stop for a complimentary tasting. Inside the building there's a tasting room filled with gifts for the wine enthusiast. We were encouraged to head outside to their tasting bar - skip inside, go straight outside. The space is under a slated pergola, a stone bar runs along one side and beautiful, vibrant magnolia trees provided extra shade. There are a variety of tables and rocking chairs to enjoy your time out there. The wine tasting had a variety of four wines. Most of the wines are named after a Belle Meade history or association with thoroughbreds. They host a wine tasting at the tail-end of the Belle Meade Plantation tour at the gift shop. Knowledgeable friendly staff who provides feedback on the wines they offer. Most of their selection are sweet wines but they have a few full bodied ones as well. They offer shipping all over, so I purchase 2 of my favs from the tasting. These were shipped via UPS, with signature required and were packaged very well. Shipping took about 1 week which was perfect because I was also traveling to Boston during this trip. At the tasting we had five different wines, but when the waitress gave us our tasting we barely got enough for a sip. It was disappointing because some of them needed more than a sip to really understand the flavors. Also there was no seating. There is also a limited selection for tasting. For a full glass the pricing wasn't so bad and you were able to choose whatever wine you wanted and I enjoyed their dessert wines very much! Tried to stop in during an adult trip and following the Whiskey trail. Figured we'd stop in and see what the winery had to offer for tastings. Not only did you have to purchase tickets just to gain access to the property (cover charge), you also had to buy more wine tasting once inside...so you essentially had to pay them for the pleasure of buying something you didn't know anything about and were there to explore. On top of that the girls at the counter "selling" admission tickets to gain access to the tasting room were very snobby. As an event manager I'd never place an event here just based on the mere fact that out of my global travels, this is the first place I've ever encountered where you have to pay cover when you're going to do a wine, beer or whiskey tasting. A complete turn off. Needless to say...we left and found 3 more wineries and distilleries within 30 minutes that were inviting, happy and appreciated business versus being full of it. Bad experience where. Would not recommend for any reason. Too many other beautiful places to see for free and explore. Too many other wineries and distilleries to enjoy for zero admission as well. As a West Nashville resident I like having the Belle Meade Winery as an option to bring guests from out of town. However, it's not the sort of place I would stop by every weekend for a glass of wine just because of the price. Located on the grounds of the Belle Meade Plantation, a tasting at this winery is included with a tour of the mansion. However, if you want to come to just to do a tasting you can stop by the visitor center and get a ticket. The grounds are lovely year round although I would recommend coming when the weather is mild as you can enjoy their patio outside the tasting room. Pros: -Friendly and knowledgeable service -Live music in the Summer -Nice patio space for enjoying a glass of wine -Good wine selection; I like their blackberry and their carriage house white the best Cons: -It is a $15 fee to access the Belle Meade Plantation grounds and this includes a tasting with 4 wines. We came here after our tour of the Belle Meade mansion, as guests must be escorted to the winery by the tour guide after the tour is finished. When our group showed up the staff at the winery quickly announced for the group to line up at the bar, for the complimentary wine tasting. The wine tasting included four wine samples, and I did like that they sell wines made from grapes of the Tennessee area. After the tasting they pass around two small appetizers, which is to sample the jams that that you can buy there, as the winery also includes a gift shop. All of the sales goes back to the operation of Belle Meade, which is cool. They also have special packaging for wine bottles if you're traveling and do ship all over the country. The wines are around the 20 dollar range and to ship a bottle is about 20 bucks. It's nice that the tour includes the complimentary wine tasting, but it's certainly not a big feature of the tour or plantation and wouldn't willingly go here without having gone on the tour of the grounds and so forth. The staff was nice, but they seemed to be in a hurry and it was clear that they were trying to sell merchandise. It's not a typical wine tasting you would get from a winery. read more
