I've wanted to come to this restaurant for awhile and it was definitely a huge disappointment…read more We first walked in and waited about five minutes for the bartender to even acknowledge us. She was laughing at the multiple old men at the bar. When we finally got her attention her words were 'you look confused' and I was - there was no sign about where to sit. Once seated my boyfriend got the engine room burger and ceaser salad - the lettuce on the bun was literally browning. I got the turkey dinner daily special and aside from the black hair on top of my turkey, it was dry and has absolutely no flavour. We waited a really long time for a refill. The atmosphere was grungy and definitely didn't feel welcoming. The most attention we received was from the multiple flies around us and our food. I wouldn't recommend this place and definitely won't be back.

But inside it's a largeish, busy pub with a dance floor, sports on the TVs, and - probably - lots of busy locals enjoying themselves. It's on the country pub side of things, with lots of wood, neon beer signs, that sort of thing. But the menu is big. My caesar salad was good; my chicken wings (they were on special) were just OK, a little on the thin side. Fast, efficient service. Seems full of friendly locals.

Words to the wise: The Sonic Temple is a dream venue for music lovers. While it typically exists as…read morea recording studio for artists, The Temple occasionally houses live performances within its walls. So. If ever you catch wind of a show happening at The Sonic Temple, be sure to grab up on tickets ASAP. Its an experience! The space is quite small, housing just under 70 people, so performances are intimate, engaged and high quality. The A-frame ceiling of this 1820s heritage home sets up an epic shelter with hanging candle holders and sky lights to boot. More candles scatter around the walls and ledges, highlighting gorgeous brick walls and its backdrop behind the 'stage'. (More of a large carpet then an actual stage.) Its part of the Sonic Entertainment building on Hollis street and not a venue that is open to the public on the regular. Thats why you've got to keep your ears open! The Temple is built by artists, for artists as a place of solitude to facilitate the recording process. Maritime artists like Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Symphony Nova Scotia have all recorded here. (to name a few!) Who knows when the next show will be... ('Post Data' just held a show there March 7 & 8th) but to have this place on your radar is certainly not a bad idea. And if you're a musician looking to master an album, The Sonic Temple is the cream of the crop. An incredible use of space to draw inspiration from both artist and audience...

Sometimes you go somewhere without a clue what to expect and you leave feeling disappointed…read more.. This is not one of those times. As a pre-show get together for the Canada Heritage moments at the Carbon Arc (note to self: remember that review too), Meegan and I met some fellow yelpers here for some nosh and wine. We were the first to arrive (around 5ish) and if I can give anyone a little piece of advice about going to check this place out for the first time let it be this - that was the perfect time to be there. There were only a few patrons inside so we were able to get some great service (both fast and super friendly). As it is a music bar and grill they seem to have an extensive list of upcoming events but when we went all was quiet. While the menu can seem a little pricey we happened to go in during happy hour (4-6). Appetizers are 2 for 1, house wine $5 = Happy Tara! There seems to be a lot of talk about the grilled cheese sandwich this place serves up but Meegan and I opted to for the lamb lollipops ($10ish), the torpedo shrimp ($9ish but remember we were there for happy hour) and then shared the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich with Avocado ($11ish). It was plenty of food for the both of us and I really thought everything was very good. The house red was nothing to shake a stick at either (and three glasses later it was even better). I loved the look of the place. Dark wood and plenty of seating without feeling like you're bumping into one another. Located on the corner of Argyle and Prince it's looks to be an awesome place to hang out especially on the patio during the summer. If you go let me know how the grilled cheese sandwich is.

The staff here are chipper, genuine, and on the ball as well. For vegans the frites are THE BEST FRIES IN THE CITY. HANDS DOWN. Those long, skinny, salty sticks of deliciousness would grace my palate thrice weekly in my own personal foodie heaven. Also, the spinach salad with the pecans, mango, and ginger soy dressing will not disappoint. It is flavourful and filling, and I would bet that it's also gluten free ! Bonus points :D I always ask how the other dishes are when I hear someone has recently gone to The Carleton. I have heard nothing but enthusiastic reviews of the other more carnivorous dishes they offer. The best part at The Carleton is truly the music. Everyone is politely denied the use of their chatterboxes while the performer(s) are doing their thing. This way everyone wins, we are all graced with auditory perfection and love it all the more. Heck, there are even great speakers in the bathrooms so if you have to visit in the middle of a show you won't miss a beat! Genius! I appreciate how particular The Carlton is when they choose their musical performers. It seems clear that anyone who graces that beautiful stage is the cream of the crop. I love buying random tickets for artists I have never heard of before because it always blows my mind and I walk away at the end of the evening with a new favourite! All in all, if you haven't gone- GO. If you're humming and hawwing about going again- YOU'RE SILLY. Just buy the ticket and dedicate yourself to an awesome evening at The Carleton!

Jan 11 & Apr 11…read more You can only live in Dartmouth so long before you end up at downtown stalwart Celtic Corner, and that's where my wife and I found ourselves on a post-holidays weekend, when looking for a relaxed meal. We leaned into the Irish options on the menu (don't you dare call them British!), as I ordered the Trinity Steak Boxty, and my wife went with the Curry 'N' Chips, with added chicken. Our food came out to us in quick order, and we were soon happily chomping away on our brown foods My wife's curry and chips is a pub classic, and while I appreciate that the curry was served on the side and not making the fries soggy, it is very not visually appealing to see plain diced chicken on a pile of fries. Once it got a dousing of the curry sauce it looked a little better, but let's be honest, a dish of assorted shades of yellow and brown isn't winning any beauty contests anytime soon. When reading the menu, I had incorrectly remembered the boxty as a pastry dish. However, while it is a dish of meat and sauce in a carb shell, it's actually more rustic than a pastry, with the exterior comprised of shredded potatoes. The potato pancake had a significant char on the edges that was just seconds from being full-on burnt, but the flavour (and crisp edges) worked well with the indulgently rich filling of steak, mushrooms and onions in a cream sauce. I'm happy to note that the bits of tenderloin were pleasantly tender and not at all dry, which isn't always the case in these sorts of dishes. Service was attentive and friendly throughout our meal. A return visit saw us returning on a bustling Friday evening during Burger Week Bash. I wasn't on a Burger Bash mission, but I figured that I would have the opportunity to try regular menu items many times in the future, plus I had a blood donation scheduled for the following week and I could use the iron top-up. The Irish Burger was a hefty, half-pound patty (a mix of lamb and pork), topped with red cabbage, goat cheese, fried onions and a garlic aioli. I appreciated the unique mix of meats for the patty, and while I'm not confident in a high lamb content, it did have a good, meaty flavour and had a decent crust on it, although it was a little overworked or compacted and too dense as a result. Some people hate on smash burgers for their ubiquity, but that style of burger avoids things like this. The toppings all kinda got lost together in the creamy mess of the goat cheese, but they worked fairly well; saltiness, savouriness, and a hint of crispness from the slaw and fried onions. A brioche-ish bun was nicely toasted and held up well against the onslaught. My wife's maple curry pasta felt like a flashback to the 2000s when this dish was on the cutting edge of Canadian fusion cuisine. It was familiar and approachable, and it was nice that they had a gluten-free pasta option as well. The Celtic Corner could use a menu revamp and upgrade their plating, but it's still a welcoming neighbourhood local that's served Dartmouth for many years, and will do so for many more to come.
