Had steamed dumpling; texture and filling were great. Would definitely go back for lunch next time I'm in town.

I think as a teen, I was slightly intimidated by this music space on the Common, thinking it was a place of loud music and aggressive young rockers. Well, the loud music part is spot on. When I ventured in to see some pals play a few weeks ago, the levels were insane. Even with my earplugs snugly in place, I still found it wildly loud. The place's acoustics aren't very good, so the sound gets all muddled making it hard to distinguish specific instruments. Nevertheless, I had a fun time. It was great to hang out on the periphery, watching younger people dance about and enjoy live music. The location of The Pavilion is great, located smack dab in the North Common, it's easily accessible from all angles of the city. You can indulge in some soda or some snacks when you're there, but this is a booze free zone, plus shows usually happen pretty early in the evening. Even if you're no longer sporting a fake ID, this place is a legitimate destination for all age groups. If it's a show worth catching, you should definitely hit up The Pavilion for some loud music and dancing fun.

I know I'm way too old, but hey, sometimes it's fun to endure the all-ages crowd to see a band you really like. The kids don't really seem to care, and it's not like I'm going on death metal night or whatever. I'm glad a space like the Pavilion exists to give these kids a place to hear live music. Manager Chris Smith seems to keep a pretty good handle on things in terms of rowdiness, and the teenagers are glad to have a place to rock out. Rock out, does that make me sound old? Anyway. It is what it is and it's a necessity in a city this size to have a place for people under 19 to go and enjoy the music scene. Music scene, does that make me sound old?

While it typically exists as…read morea recording studio for artists, The Temple occasionally houses live performances within its walls. So. If ever you catch wind of a show happening at The Sonic Temple, be sure to grab up on tickets ASAP. Its an experience! The space is quite small, housing just under 70 people, so performances are intimate, engaged and high quality. The A-frame ceiling of this 1820s heritage home sets up an epic shelter with hanging candle holders and sky lights to boot. More candles scatter around the walls and ledges, highlighting gorgeous brick walls and its backdrop behind the 'stage'. (More of a large carpet then an actual stage.) Its part of the Sonic Entertainment building on Hollis street and not a venue that is open to the public on the regular. Thats why you've got to keep your ears open! The Temple is built by artists, for artists as a place of solitude to facilitate the recording process. Maritime artists like Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Symphony Nova Scotia have all recorded here. (to name a few!) Who knows when the next show will be... ('Post Data' just held a show there March 7 & 8th) but to have this place on your radar is certainly not a bad idea. And if you're a musician looking to master an album, The Sonic Temple is the cream of the crop. An incredible use of space to draw inspiration from both artist and audience...

As a pre-show get together for the Canada Heritage moments at the Carbon Arc (note to self: remember that review too), Meegan and I met some fellow yelpers here for some nosh and wine. We were the first to arrive (around 5ish) and if I can give anyone a little piece of advice about going to check this place out for the first time let it be this - that was the perfect time to be there. There were only a few patrons inside so we were able to get some great service (both fast and super friendly). As it is a music bar and grill they seem to have an extensive list of upcoming events but when we went all was quiet. While the menu can seem a little pricey we happened to go in during happy hour (4-6). Appetizers are 2 for 1, house wine $5 = Happy Tara! There seems to be a lot of talk about the grilled cheese sandwich this place serves up but Meegan and I opted to for the lamb lollipops ($10ish), the torpedo shrimp ($9ish but remember we were there for happy hour) and then shared the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich with Avocado ($11ish). It was plenty of food for the both of us and I really thought everything was very good. The house red was nothing to shake a stick at either (and three glasses later it was even better). I loved the look of the place. Dark wood and plenty of seating without feeling like you're bumping into one another. Located on the corner of Argyle and Prince it's looks to be an awesome place to hang out especially on the patio during the summer. If you go let me know how the grilled cheese sandwich is.

The staff here are chipper, genuine, and on the ball as well. For vegans the frites are THE BEST FRIES IN THE CITY. HANDS DOWN. Those long, skinny, salty sticks of deliciousness would grace my palate thrice weekly in my own personal foodie heaven. Also, the spinach salad with the pecans, mango, and ginger soy dressing will not disappoint. It is flavourful and filling, and I would bet that it's also gluten free ! Bonus points :D I always ask how the other dishes are when I hear someone has recently gone to The Carleton. I have heard nothing but enthusiastic reviews of the other more carnivorous dishes they offer. The best part at The Carleton is truly the music. Everyone is politely denied the use of their chatterboxes while the performer(s) are doing their thing. This way everyone wins, we are all graced with auditory perfection and love it all the more. Heck, there are even great speakers in the bathrooms so if you have to visit in the middle of a show you won't miss a beat! Genius! I appreciate how particular The Carlton is when they choose their musical performers. It seems clear that anyone who graces that beautiful stage is the cream of the crop. I love buying random tickets for artists I have never heard of before because it always blows my mind and I walk away at the end of the evening with a new favourite! All in all, if you haven't gone- GO. If you're humming and hawwing about going again- YOU'RE SILLY. Just buy the ticket and dedicate yourself to an awesome evening at The Carleton!

From headlining comics to marathon TV filmings, Rankin Family Christmases to symphonies and ballets, I love to think of the Cohn as a place that doesn't let just anyone up on its stage - although a brief boy-bandy history begs to differ. The building is pretty central on the Dal campus and easily found but parking can sometimes be an issue. Give yourself some extra time and maybe even try parking on the other side of Coburg and strolling down. But once you're there, you'll have no problems. The bar is on the main level, bathrooms are one floor down, and balcony (obviously) is one floor up. There are stairs and ramps everywhere though so you don't get the horrible post-show congestion that you might experience elsewhere. Seats are comfortable enough, acoustics are pretty stellar, and there aren't many bad views in the house. Decor? Yeah, getting a little dated but the Cohn is more Hellen Mirren than Real Housewife of Any County, so I'm okay with it.

Must be the result of an impression made on me as a kid. At any rate, when I say Cohn, I mean Dal. :-D I've seen several shows here in my life. The latest was either Henry Rollins or Gerry Dee. The lobby is nice and spacious, lots of room for event-goers to establish their personal space while waiting for the doors to open (unlike Neptune). It has a 70s feel, but it has nice warm woods and if it were upgraded it would become tinted glass and steel like all the other new developments in this city. Yuck. Seating is roomy enough. Seats are clean, plush and comfortable. Sight lines are pretty darn good. The balconies are fabulous. Sound carries well and isn't distorted. Overall this is probably the best concert venue in Halifax: not too big, not too small, good south-end location and a good venue for a variety of events.

It is a gorgeous old building in downtown Halifax, and in the last number of years the direction has been shifting; attempting to transition from its fairly stuffy roots, into something a little more accessible and perhaps more appealing to a younger crowd. Last night I attended a theatre performance at The Halifax Club. Zuppa, an amazing local theatre company, staged their play "Penny Dreadful" in the Uniacke room. The play is set in the 1800s so The Halifax Club as a venue, with its high ceilings and large paintings, was a very appropriate choice for the ensemble. The Pryor room bar was open before and after the show and our charming bartender Alex was helpful and generous. I enjoyed a glass of red wine for $7.5 while my date's beer was about $5.5. All of the people we encountered during our evening were very friendly and fun. If you happen to be invited by a member to dine or attend a function at The Halifax Club, you should accept the invitation. If you're hoping to become a member, check out the website. I'm sure it's not cheap, but you can feel both a sense of excitement and nostalgia knowing that you're walking the same halls that James C. Cogswell and William Cunard once did.

He walked us through the menu and any rentals we needed (dance floor) and was really accommodating. We had the place to ourselves and they were able to let the wedding party in early for photographs (damn rain...the only rainy Labour Day weekend in almost ten years, I swear). The food was great. I loved that I didn't have to worry about decorations - a few flowers, a bit of sheer fabric to match our colours on the table and boom! the place was ready to go. My guests loved it and kept saying how classy my wedding was, but it was all because I chose this as my venue. (disclaimer: this is all based on the service I had in 2004).
