Bella Italia in Glasgow city centre, is located on Sauchiehall Street, it is one of the four restaurants the chain has in Scotland which is a very large chain south of the border. I came here for a quick bite to eat before heading for my train at Glasgow Central, after a bad dining experience elsewhere in the city.
I was able to get a table easily without a reservation, although they were not overly busy. The interior was similar to any Bella Italia, it was bright and comfortable. Upon being seated, my server asked me if I had any allergies, after making her aware I was coeliac, I was given a flag for my table and some allergen information to make me feel more secure in the dining environment. This put me at ease, as I've had issues with Bella Italia serving me dishes with gluten at more than one of their locations in the past.
I wasn't too hungry, so I just ordered a garlic and mozzarella gluten-free pizza bread, despite having a small order with tap water, the staff members were still friendly enough and happy to serve me, although no one checked up on me during my meal to check everything was okay and if I needed anything.
The portion size was a little small, especially considering the base was thin and the menu stated it would be ideal for two people to share, I do remember the size being much larger, but I'm not sure if this is something this Bella location has done recently or a change within the chain as a whole, having not visited Bella in 12 months or so before this visit.
The food tasted fine, it was a little dry in some parts but did have some nice flavours. It was reasonably priced at £6.99 but still with the portion size going down AND the price going up since my previous visit, it is frustrating, they should do one or the other, and not both!
3* - Pretty average chain Italian, there are certainly better options in Glasgow, but there's also much worse. read more
