Instead, the receptionist talked to me to say she was there to help me instead but she didn't really know what the social worker and I spoke about and the reason of my visit. She said, "you just want resources" when the reason for my visit was to fill out paperwork. I already have all the literature from a previous visit. After I left, I called the receptionist to tell her that just blowing off an appt with a client is not acceptable, specially since they are in the business of caring and dealing with people under a lot of stress. My voice was stressed and I was upset but I wasn't screaming. She said, I can't scream at her or she'll hang up the phone, then before I can respond she hang up the phone. Where's the compassion and the professionalism that one should expect from an institution like this? I can just imagine how they treat patients staying there who have dementia and can't speak for themselves. One would think that they would treat the family decently at least until the patient is in so one if left to wonder how bad they get after that.

Please do not take your loved ones here. They are always short staffed and what staff they do have…read morechanges frequently because they do not treat their staff well. Nursing directors here also change frequently. Although they call themselves an Alzheimer's Special Care Facility, they are quick to tell families that they must provide and pay for additional help when your loved one needs additional assistance such as eating, bathing, and just general attention. They are quick to send patients to behavioral hospitals when they feel that they are even remotely out of sorts. Any decent Alzheimer's facility would realize that this is part of the disease and that any changes in environment can have devastating and lasting effects on the patient. If you do decide to consider this facility, please spend an afternoon there and observe. They have also had several deaths due to falls of patients who were not properly supervised, respiratory infections and one from sepsis.

I was straightening up and picked up something that had fallen under the desk and about a dozen roaches ran out. My friend is visually impaired, so she can't see the cracker on the floor or the crumbs, or that she's dropped her medication. I depend on her "angle" to pay attention to things.. My mom in law is not good with stairs or even curbs. This woman comes in a truck. The first obstacle On the way to the store she starts to tell my mother in law how awful she feels, that her back and legs are really hurting and she doesn't know how she will make it through the store. Mom, being a sweet lady, says "it's ok, I can go alone". And this woman lets her. Long story short, she was able to get everything she needed but was very tired and a bit confused by the time she got to check out. She told me that she felt scared She managed to get everything on the checkout belt but could not sack her groceries. Finally, the cashier helped her and she went out to be picked up by the Visiting Angel. This woman took her home and did (at least) take her groceries into the house for. Of course, because it was still pouring and she drove a truck, all of the bags were full of water and everything was soaking wet. For this 'service' she was charged $50. Being the kind of human that she is, she forbids us to actually call Visiting Angles in Bloomington, IN and demand an explanation and her $$ back. So I can tell my story here. Obviously we will not be using this service again, but hopefully, this review will be seen and this organization will keep this from happening to someone else. This story could have had a much worse ending.

While in Indianapolis this weekend, I went with my friend to visit her mother who recently became a…read moreresident of Independence Village in Avon. I was impressed from the minute I walked in the door. The receptionist was so welcoming, and she and my friend had a great conversation upon entering. The first thing I noticed was how clean the facility is (it was recently freshly painted) and how wide the hallways are, which allows easy access for walkers, etc. We went up to her mother's one bedroom apartment on the third floor and it was a good size for one person, complete with kitchen facilities and a big bathroom. (There are studios, and one- and two-bedroom apartments and I was able to see all of them on my visit.) While walking the hallways, I noticed the colorful artwork on the walls, the theater, the library, the activities center and several other amenities that indicated to me this was more a community than a "nursing home". It is quite a cheerful and friendly atmosphere. We then went down to lunch and sat with her and another resident. They both stated the food was quite good and they liked the selections provided for each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The dining room is spacious, and the staff is amazing, friendly and interactive. While sitting in the dining room, the Director, Sue, came to the table to talk to her residents and we had a pleasant conversation also. I told her how impressed I was with this facility, and she thanked me, but also thanked me for allowing her to administer to "our loved ones that we put in her care". I was impressed! Sue definitely is dedicated and takes special pride in making sure the residents are well cared for and happy. If you are looking for a place to care for your loved ones when the time comes, I suggest you look no further than this facility. It really is top-notch! It also has a Memory Care facility. Although I did not visit that section, my friend said it is just as impressive.

My husband and I were able to see first hand the gentle and loving care and respect that you would hope your parents receive in an assisted living facility by Jody and her team. At sign in Jody made sure to maintain eye contact with my 87 year old father in law the entire time making it perfectly clear to all of us that without a power of attorney, he was the adult and at no time if we had different desires for him, would our wishes usurp decision making powers. I appreciated that and so did he. He was worried about losing his Dignity and autonomy when he was moving into assisted living and that was extremely helpful for him to realize that he would not be losing anything but gaining support in cleaning and food preparation. He now has access to a nurse on every floor PT and OT on-site, a gorgeous new facility, a handyman who is helpful in putting up thing for them, and loving souls like Kelly who does their activities and drives them to the stores and doctors appointments and Jody who's job says move in coordinator but is waaay more than that! She has also been my double checker...My only checker... my only complaint would be in the enthusiasm of selling us on Vivera (which was t needed, it sells itself) there were several times the marketing director gaves is incorrect information about pricing and social security info- when both my husband and I questioned the validity of the information she insisted yes she was correct. For many that would have put them in a really bad position. Fortunately, I had developed a relationship with Jody that when I had asked her she was able to clarify for me the accuracy and we were able to set our path straight early on in the on boarding process. I only say this so if you are looking... make sure you speak with Jody- she is a wealth of knowledge and with be straight forward with you! As a comparison, we had my mother in law at silver oaks first and it was fine, but the facility was not nearly as nice- I would say borderline depressing, and although the staff was friendly, they didn't go above and beyond like Jody, Kelly, Janie and the crew.

Dr. Leighton is highly experienced, knowledgeable, and professional. The doctor gave her various exercises to do throughout the course of treatment. She continued to improve and is still pain free today thanks to Dr. Leighton's help. The staff and Dr. Leighton were always very friendly when we were there for appointments. They got to know each of our family members and called us all by name. They asked how we were doing and would always take time to chit chat. That made our experience more personal. We were more that just another patient.
