It is an…read moreunusual "Free Little Art Gallery" and the sign on the front reads, "Welcome to Opelika's Free Little Art Gallery. Have a look around one of the smallest art galleries in town. We hope you will take a piece of art, leave a piece of art or both." The gallery is one of three in Opelika. It is sponsored by Art Haus and built by Opelika High School engineering students. The galleries are miniature architectural replicas of the Art Haus building at 500 N. Railroad Ave. Architect Behzad Nakhjavan scaled down the plans, and Opelika High School engineering students constructed the galleries through a grant from the Henry J. Stern Family Foundation. The Opelika High School Art Club curates the rotating artwork inside. J. and Ginger Stern of the Art Haus brought the idea to Opelika after seeing similar projects in New Orleans. Their goal was to create small, joyful, low‑barrier art spaces that encourage creativity across the community. The project was completed over the summer of 2024 and officially launched that October. But while the Dillard's feels modern, the dimly-lit interior of Belk feels like you've traveled back in time to the '90s, and B. Turner's is straight out of the '80s! The "food court" is less of a court and more of a hallway intersection that happens to have three restaurants. Two of these serve crappy Asian knock-off food and one is a Chick-fil-A. There is also a Great American Cookie place, and a country buffet deeper into the mall. There's just not much to see here, and that's exactly why the college kids call it the S'mall.
