When I buy seafood - it makes a big impression that I can actually see the sea and boats from the store. Now add in years of experience, a super clean and shiny shop, great variety, friendly staff and of course fresh FISH. Whole fish, fillets, 'steaks', shellfish - langoustines with the whiskers still twitching, a giant tank of lobster, piles of mussels and loads of extras. They have smokies, smoked haddock, cold smoked salmon and my favourite - their own Hot Smoked Salmon. You can even get slices of these vac packed (well - they can vac pack anything for you) to keep in the fridge for a few days. Soft, flaky, smoky, delicate - great cold or gently warmed up. All this is set at the quaint Newhaven harbour - completely with picturesque lighthouse, dock with seats to sit and watch the boats from and a couple of restaurants. Makes it all worth the trip!

The most endearing point to make is the fact that rather than reside behind a counter, the fishmongers mix amongst the patrons and take an active interest in showing their produce in best light. Tesco, Morrisons, ASDA and the like, take note...this is seafood and that is service at it's best! Bravo!

I have never seen a fishmongers so busy; on saturday mornings you can see people actually queuing outside just to pick up some prawns or whatever. I mean how many places can you say that about. And the fish is incredible. Having bought the aforementioned prawns (didn't queue though - not because they're not worth it, just because I'm really lazy) I can safely say they're the best in Edinburgh. They are absolutely huge, really fresh and tasted amazing. The rest of the food is awesome as well, even if you're just picking up a piece of haddock or something then it is the best place around. Admittedly slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but when you're getting fish of this quality that is fresh every day then you can't really complain.

The staff are not only friendly but also really knowledgeable. When I went in I needed things to make a fish pie, although I didn't know which fish would be best for it. Rather than simply trying to flog me the most expensive fish they had, the guy was very patient with me and showed me loads of different options. When I used to live in Marchmont I used to see the new deiliveries coming in every day (on the rare occasions I was up early enough, that is!), so you can always be confident that the stuff they have is fresh.

I got the lobster and chips. The lobster is so so so tasty. The chips had the lobster garlic and butter juice all over them. I don't actually like chips (French fries) however these were so good I ate the entire tray to the point of making myself sick with overeating! They do run out of lobster and there is always a line so be warned, but I would wait in line anyway for this glorious food.

All were some of the best we have ever tasted. This is a good shop to visit that is not too far out from the city centre and well worth looking…read moreinto if you are passing. The fish on offer here offers both good quality and reasonable pricing, which is as much as you can really ask for. My main complaint is the fact that they only display prices in pounds. I know that fishmongers work in pounds, but I work in kilos and I can't help but think that it wouldn't be much effort on their part just to knock out the conversion on a calculator whereas I have to try and do it in my head without really knowing how many pounds are equivalent to a kilo. Despite this, you do seem to get a good amount of fish for you money even though I'm not precisely sure how much you get, but it is certainly on a par with elsewhere. The staff here are friendly and will be happy to have a quick chat with you as they weigh out your order and get you your chance which adds a bit of pleasantry to your visit although I must admit I still struggle with some of the accents so my parts in these chats often end up being nodding and smiling a lot. Another little criticism, however, is that the range is fairly small sticking to the old favourites which most will be happy with, but I do like choice in my fish so I do find this a bit disappointing. I was immediately drawn to "Something Fishy" as the lovely wee shoppe reminded me of the old fishmongers we used to have around in my birthplace near La Rochelle before the bloody supermarkets put them all out of business. So my friend and I popped in on a Tuesday an inquired about these fine ladies of the sea.. alas there wasn't any. As the benevolent and knowledgeable owner explained us, since it's a pricey delicacy people tend to treat themselves with it only for fine supper over the week-end. That said, the good man went on a limb and offered to order us a kilo of them to pick-up on Thursday morning, without any guarantee that the Frog and Yankee tourists will be back for it. Needless to say, I was there on Thursday morning at first light! And what lovely beasts they were.. big, extra fresh and full of caviar.. But pictures are best. Quel délice!

I can…read morehonestly say that the guys who run this place really know their stuff, and are happy to give suggestions and tips for cooking. Saturdays can be pretty mental, but they are always willing to take time and vacuum pack your fish for you to ensure it stays fresh in the freezer. I love this place and spend far too much of my money here, but I will never buy fish in a supermarket again, as long as I live in a reasonable distance from Kerachers.
