Their Stout is like Guinness only better.

Four of us did the brewery tour guided by Chris. Good explanation of the processes and malting and we got to taste 4 different malted barley grains each with a specific flavor. Non drivers each got to taste 4 of the beers. Well worth the time and small fee. Bout 2 hours long.

The Fisherman Pie, which was Haddock, Smoked Haddock and Salmon in a Creamy Leek & Chive Sauce, topped with Mash Potato and Isle of mull Cheddar, was delicious. Even the Seasonal Vegetables, which were served with the pie was really good. On top of that, they had a nice long list of ciders to select from and they had the Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, which is one of my favorites.

On entering it is a spacious and cosy looking bar that is definitely suited for tourists with a collection of beer mats almost being used as wallpaper to cover most of the free space behind the bar, some of which I had never even heard of! The decor and feel to the sitting area itself is traditional with a modern fusion, little tweaks like old spirit bottles (JD mainly) being used as candle holders are excellent to the vibe of the place and really let you settle happily in to one of the booths and take the surroundings in. We went in here because my better half was feeling hungry (I was saving myself for the North Berwick Fry which is just next door to the Ship Inn, in hindsight I should have eaten here) and decided to pop in here for a drink & a bit of lunch/dinner, we definitely weren't disappointed. A chicken and bacon burger was ordered and a chicken and bacon burger it was. Where the chicken that this chicken breast came from I don't know but it was definitely doing some serious weightlifting and bulking up. It was MASSIVE, in all it's chickeny beauty I found it hard to resist taking a huge bite out of the burger. Long stoy short, I ended up taking a huge bite out of the burger. The chicken was beautifully juicy for general pub grub and the bacon was lovely, sweet but slightly salted which gelled all the flavours of the breaded chicken and the toasted roll together. Thinking about it now, I'm getting hungry again. Every time I have a pub burger, the side salad always lets it down, every time, it's like the bars expect people not to eat it, but not this bar. The salad was crisp and fresh, served up with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette that was perfect for dipping a wee bit of the roll in. The spirit measures were 35ml and the guest ales on offer covered breweries such as Innis & Gunn and The Inveralmond Brewery (who do beers such as Lia Fail and Ossian) which justified the bar being about 60-70p more expensive than the others we visited.

I tell you all that to say that we did not take the Bewery Tour because I thought I might be related but because we sampled two of Stewart's brews 80/- and Black in Edinburgh. They are delicious. So my wife was game to go regardless of whether we met Steve or not. That would have been the "Orange slice on the top". Spoiler alert, I plan to write him and see if he's game to join our genetic genealogy project. So no we didn't meet him , but Jeff Simonsen was a great host, told a great history of craft brewing, how beer is made, and the great things Steve is doing to teach others how to brew. The samples were great! And we even found an IPA we both liked (and that's unusual! I'm generally not a hop guy. It's called Radical Road! Oh BTW, Stewart's Brewery was Scottish Brewery of the year in 2024! Great job Cousin. Thanks Jeff and Steve, you'll be hearing from me about the genealogy thing. Don (ald) Stewart, California. USA

Do you like beer? Do you like Ales? Do you like heritage?…read more Then you are at the right place at the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh/ Dalry, off Slateford Road! Today I joined a 1.5h tour of the brewery premises to get some knowledge of Beer/Ale brewing with an aftermath of tasting certain brands like Deuchars, Flying Scotsman, 80 Shillings and Over the Bar, my favourite being the FLYING SCOTSMAN. I am not normally an ale drinker, but this time I made an exception. In addition we got some nice pies served with the beer what was the perfect ending to a nice day! Check out their website! You can book your own tours (especially popular with stag/hen nights) which range from £12 to £30 dependent if you like food with your tour and beer/ale tasting. The brewery is old and traditional, still showing some of their original features. It's very clean and presentable, not like other places. Last but not least, the staff is very engaged and present the spirit of this place very well. Enjoy!

The brewery is unusual in a way as it focuses on brewing cask conditioned ale, which was normally brewed in England. The stable ales that the brewery produces are Deuchers IPA and Caledonian 80 (a more typical Scottish like ale). However, throughout the years the brewery has produced a variety of different ales for special occasions. Ales such as Over the Bar, Highland Fling, Auld Acquaintance and Old Seadog are just some the ales which reinforced by enjoyment of Caledonian Brewery. I started purely on Deuchers IPA and from then on, I began my journey through the many quality ales that this brewery produces. If you want to taste the best of Scottish brewing, then why not taste a tipple from the Caledonian Brewery!

My face is resembling the love-hearts-for-eyes emoji and I haven't even set foot inside. You see, Berwick is great for many, many things. It's a beautiful place and one I've visited on countless occasions. But, as far as beer goes, it's a real ale in real old pubs kind of place and there's no shame in that! So imagine my delight when we discover the warm and beardy Ray and his shop of beery wonders. It's time for a shake up in Berwick in the shape of this unashamedly hipster craft beer and vinyl haunt. (Bring Your Own Vinyl is the last Wednesday of every month from 5pm. - You're welcome!) H & B ticks all the boxes. You can sit in and have a beer. There's radlers on offer for the lightweights - myself included! - and kombucha if you're so inclined. (Left Field kombucha, mmm!) Oh, and there's gin too! You can buy any beer to take away. Dogs are very much welcome. There's a guitar if the mood calls for it and chat if you fancy it. If not, sit back, relax and enjoy your brew! Tell Ray what you like and he'll steer you in the right direction. - He's oozing with passion for beer, his business and local brews. We loved everything we tried and can't wait to come back. The difficulty is having just one, especially so because you're in damn good company. I visited with my boyfriend and his 97 year old grandad and, before we knew it, hours had passed and we'd got swept up in good beer, good chat and all-round good vibes. An awesome little spot in the borders if you're a craft beer lover!

I adore these folks!…read more I fangirled the first time I found myself standing in Innis & Gunn HQ. Back home in Canada, this is one of THE biggest, most badassest (it's a word!) players in the beer game, so having the HQ here in the city was another tick on the "why Edinburgh is amazing" list. Now, full disclosure: I've done a series of promotional tastings with these folks. Full disclosure, the sequel: I would do a million more. They are some of the most polished and professional folks to work with. Claire M knows her sh*t - she is a wizard with a crowd, knowledgable without seeming snobby and completely comfortable & genuine with what she does. I've worked with her on a beer + cheese and a beer + chocolate tasting and they were brilliant little events (perfect for a corporate gig or holiday party). I now keep my eyes open for other tasting that pop up here, so I can attend without my business cap on. Great beer. Great events. Well worth stalking on social media. Mad love for these folks.

The beer goes without saying, and the combination with the chocolates from Edward & Irwin were fab, the hostesses delightful, and the company truly a joy to be around. Innis & Gunn take their neighbourhood address seriously; the décor is well thought out, right down to the company branded wallpaper throughout. It smacks of luxury, which only helps the beer go down all the better. Through the chocolate/beer tasting, I also had the opportunity to try a couple of the offerings that I hadn't before - the wheatbeer with bergamot was a revelation. As they say, I had the most wonderful time and if you ever have the opportunity to go, make sure you do.
