They also push the boat out by holding a artistic participatory events, exhibitions and performances. The Crescent Arts Centre are also the curators of the City Dance Festival and Belfast's longest running literary festival - Between the Lines. I was there recently for the Trans:mission night, showcasing the best Irish electronica musicians, as part of Belfast's innovative trans festival. I was itching to see Nouveau Noise, from Dublin who play deliciously glitchy and lush electronica. The set up was very relaxed. It was a mere £5 in and BYOB. Everyone in the main room was seated round tables dotted around the venue and chatting away. On stage there were electronica acts playing some really interesting and innovative stuff with some cool visuals being projected behind them. In the middle of the night, there was a drawing competition- where two massive boards were erected each side of the stage and a 'crew' of illustrators and street artists from Dublin had to freestyle a picture, with a Dj playing in the background. It made for such an interesting night. I'm all for Arts spaces opening up their doors to gigs, like Block T in Dublin. And the bring your own booze door policy is always a winner.

It's a fabulous, free day out where you can wander around the Belfast campus of UU enjoying recent graduate artwork. Also known as Belfast School of Art or The Art College. The building itself is an impressive architectural delight, full of natural light and is warm, welcoming and modern in atmosphere and design. Home to BA, Masters and PhD courses in all areas of design, fine arts, craft and architecture. You can literally see everything here - ceramics, silversmithing, jewellery, sculpture, painting, installation art, graphic design, film, interior and architecture etc. The graduate show is open to the public for approximately a week each June. Wear comfy shoes, as once you're in Belfast School of Art you'll literally spend a full day taking in all the wonderful, exciting and sometimes weird art on display. Most of the art is for sale, so if you fall in love with a piece you might be able to buy it - and who knows - it might even be by a future superstar Artist! It provides 23 subsidised studio spaces to Artists working in various mediums. The QSS Gallery also displays contemporary, thought provoking visual art exhibitions all year round. You'll find a range of activities going on including exhibitions, talks and open studio days, which allow the public a chance to walk around the normally closed off studios. I visited QSS during Belfast Open Studios 2015 and was amazed at the fabulous, bright, huge building with art studios spanning 4 floors. We were warmly greeted on arrival by Studios Administrator Brendan O'Neill and Gallery Assistant Aoife Earley, given a warming cup of Suki tea and allowed to explore to our hearts content. The Artists were welcoming, friendly and chatty and it was fascinating to view their personal work spaces and see and hear about their work processes. In particular I loved the studios of Craig Donald, Catherine Davison, Zoe Murdoch, Clement McAleer, Sinead McKeever and Angela Hackett. Unfortunately that's as far as I got, only half way through the second floor. I was on a walking tour of Belfast studios and sadly ran out of time - we had to move on to the next place. However I will return to see more exhibitions in QSS Gallery and am looking forward to next years open studio event when I plan to spend a whole day wandering around QSS. I would highly recommend a visit to QSS to see exhibitions, visit the studio space and purchase a unique art work.

The price range clearly shows that the stuff here really is for someone who wants to make a serious commitment. I always call in for a look when I pass Eakin. Yesterday I visited to view the beautiful, stylised, atmospheric paintings of George Callaghan. His harvest sunset paintings are mesmerising and I adore his 'Purple Haze' landscapes. A beautiful exhibition for this time of year as we near the end of October. Prices vary, ranging from smaller works for a few hundred pounds to larger paintings for a few thousand. If I win the lotto I may one day be able to buy instead of just browse!
