    Smaller but no less good.
    Jules S.

A sweetie shop for creative types, Bradbury used to take over this whole corner but in recent times has halved in size. Obviously the financial downturn applied to artists too. No need to worry as while they are smaller they still have everything you could possibly need to knock up your attempt at a masterpiece. Housing a good stock of paints, papers and pencils you probably could buy cheaper online, but sometimes the muse just takes you and you want stuff there and then, eh fellow Picassos? ;-) They also sell completed works by established artists and limited edition prints if you are feeling particularly flush, but if you've made it here just buy a brush and do it yourself!

Since I did art in school from GCSE onwards, I've been a little bit in love with this shop and have always wanted to work there. It supplies every single thing you might need to be creative. Oil paints, printing blocks, assortments of paper and card, glitter, paintbrushes, calligraphy pens and a million other things that you don't need but that you want...very badly. They also have a gallery connected to the art store, which, if it doesn't put you in the mood to buy art, will put you in the mood to create some. I've seen some gorgeous paintings and prints in here, and always hoped I could buy one. The true creative types and art lovers could get lost in here, looking through all the supplies and artistic ideas and so forth. It isn't cheap though, especially if you need a good few items, but you will feel like you've treated yourself to something special.

As a younger man I harboured some modest artist ambitions so when I first moved to Belfast I grew to love this shop. Now re-located for a looong time now it's good to see they kept the original name and the shop floor space has expanded accordingly. Even if your not of a particularly artist bent a visit is recommended to browse the large selection of cards and prints. For the more serious art crowd out there, the stock and selection of paint, papers, stencils, brushes, pencils etcetc is quite staggering. Just out at the back of Boots give it a go. Pro: Manna for the serious and not so serious artist. Cons: This stuff can get pricey.

Oh boy, oh boy…read more.. I'm one of these people who always wanted to be artistically creative. My mum can paint, sketch, knit, crochet, and all the rest of it, but unfortunately I didn't inherit her arty farty genes. Stick men and colour co-ordination is really the height of it for me. Well, at least my stick people will be well dressed... Thank goodness for Craftworld, a haven of every possible kind of art form known to man. To my delight, this includes those colourful beads which you place on a random plastic shape, cover with iron-proof paper, and iron. Cue excitement. I actually made one of these a number of years ago. A blue and red place mat in the shape of a star which sits on my desk. Craftworld appreciates the lesser forms of art. Happy days. If you're not one for fusing together beads (and let's face, apart from a five year old and myself, who really is?), do not fear. Everything from dolls houses to thread, from glitter to polystyrene shapes can be found in Craftworld. There's a lovely wee wedding section at the very back too. Lovely jubbly.

They stock a really great range of canvas sizes, oil and water colours, in fact they have a really great collection of everything you could need. I was after outlining lead for painting on glass and they had run out but the really helpful girl behind the desk offered to order it in for me. Throughout the shop you can also find paintings by local artists which are framed and ready to be sold. This is one of the only shops I have seen that stocks Decopatch - a thin tissue paper like product that can be applied to surfaces to cover or decorate them - the patterns are really cool and there is a huge cow in the shop fully decorated showing you the effect that can be achieved with the paper. I would have browsed for longer but there was a really loud man and really loud kids in the place so I left - I'm a grumpy old hag sometimes!

It's pretty cheap too which is always good as people do tend to rip the arse out of kids shops as they know tantrums could result in a child not getting what they want and parents looking for the easy life begrudgingly giving in. The Art & Hobby shop is in a great location, probably the best location of all the crafty shops in town, so I end up going in simply because I'm passing it. It's not my favourite though. I find it a little more expensive than its rivals and it is a lot more focused on kids toys and crafts, which can make it hard when you want to make a card for someone over the age of 5!

I think of it as being like a car boot sale full of random items including candles, nail files, beads, cheap craft and art materials, games, toys, coffee, spices, makeup brushes, napkins, sweets, yoga mats, hand wash, notebooks, novelty knick-knacks, pots, pans and picture frames. Despite the fact that Tiger peddle a pile of rubbish, I quite enjoy a good riffle through it. Since everything's so cheap I tend to lose my mind and am tempted to buy all I see. Thankfully, sense intervenes just in the knick of time, so I always manage to leave the shop empty handed. However, when I next need napkins, candles or a new yoga mat I might consider heading straight to Tiger. I envisage it as being a useful shop to pick up Christmas stocking fillers or novelty items to bulk out 'proper' birthday gifts - for people I don't like or for when I can't be bothered putting any effort or thought into gift buying. Much to my shame I must admit I do like Tiger, in spite of my better judgement. Thus is the seductive and dangerous appeal of such shops. Tiger really has everything - it's sort of like little snippets of life, that as quite a strange thing to say but what I mean is that it's not a shop selling specific products, it sells a little bit of everything. It's the perfect place to pick up novelty items like quirky straws and party games. Cost wise it's not expensive - the price tags are weird though - they try and encourage you to buy multiple items by pricing things as 4 for £2 for example. Even for singular items the tag says '1 for £10'. Strange. A few people have compared this to Ikea - I can see the resemblance - it oozes Scandinavian coolness. I loved it - was really quiet when I went in so I got to have a good nosey around.
