I had to force myself to finish the tasting. Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Ice Wine are all varieties I typically enjoy, but these were all a pass. At Bel Lago they ask that you either purchase a wine flight of 4 varieties for $15 or a glass. So my husband and I both got individual flights. Unfortunately, our server was distracted while puring my flight so when I picked my favorite for another glass, I got the wrong one and was never able to actually figure out which it was. Their prices are high for tastings and I'm extremely disappointed in the service. Would rather spend my time at Leelanau Cellars!! read more

Bel Lago was so wonderful! This was the start of our wine tasting tour, and we were not disappointed one bit! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with smiles. The server was extremely helpful, explaining the menu to us and even going above and beyond to explain where the water and bathrooms were (small, but helpful). When ordering our flight, he steered us in the direction of making a better pick with their newest Rosé - NoMI. We were thankful for this because it was a great addition! The Late Harvest Riesling was the best we had ever had, and the best this entire day through the Leelanau Peninsula. We didn't get a bottle, but should have (and might before we leave the area). We got a bottle of the Raspberry Vera not only because it was delicious, but because it was half off (seriously, $6.50 for a bottle of wine). We couldn't say no. They had a variety of wines on sale for 50% off, so definitely worth checking out. If we're in the area again, we will be back! read more

We always loved Bel Lago, but unfortunately they no longer offer wine tastings! Your only options are a glass or a full flight, so if you're making a lot of stops to really get to see the peninsula, Bel Lago no longer makes sense as a stop. This place is off the beaten path as far as some of the other wineries in the area. I agree with the other reviewer that it's a little boring. HOWEVER, my brother and I did meet some fun people here that we ended up hanging out with for the rest of the night - and that was not boring. The wines are good, VERY reasonably priced, and the staff behind the bar was kind. There could have been a little music going... I think that that would have improved things quite a bit. Besides the lack-luster feel of the tasting room, it was a great time... and great wines. I definitely suggest giving it a go. read more

First off, the drive to Bel Lago winery is absolutely stunning. You go through beautiful country roads that wind up to a hilltop with a panoramic view of Lake Leelanau. The entire drive is lined with lush green grass, random grazing cows, patches of sunflower, and vineyards here and there. It is breathtaking. MUST DO. Next, the Bel Lago wine itself is really good stuff. In addition to their standard selection of wines, they manufacture two cherry wines that are must-try's! Especially since you're (kind of) in Traverse City! The Cherry dessert wine is my personal favorite, really sweet and intensely cherry flavored...with 19% alcohol. But the alcohol is not overbearing at all, which makes it so wonderful (and dangerous). The 2010 Riesling here is also great. If you like sweet wines, you will dig this one. Finally, the customer service is wonderful. Our wine tasting hostess(?) gave us recommendations on where to go to get the best view of the Sleeping Bear dunes, which turned out to be an amazing scenic route that became the highlight of our trip. All of the staff was very friendly and inviting. Highly recommended. read more

Our entire trip to Bel Lago was wonderful! We enjoyed a scenic drive getting there (including a beautiful view of the lake!), found parking easily, and had a fun wine tasting experience. Our host who led our tasting did a great job engaging us all, even though our group varied widely in terms of wine experience. He pride in their wine was obvious, which definitely enhanced the experience. My favorite was a dessert cherry wine. The alcohol content was high at 19%, but definitely didn't taste like it. The gewurztraminer was also awesome -- very fragrant. If you have the opportunity to stop by, it's definitely worthwhile. read more

This was the first stop on a 2 day wine trip. Being the first place you don't want to spend all your money just to be broke for the rest, but that rule was shot. The wines are lovely great yummy smooth and award winning. Our server was SO helpful being it was our first time in the area she helped us on where to stay the night and where to get good food and such, offered a BIG helping of information without being asked. Bel Lago has great views and wonderful service. Perfect little stop and the drive in was on back country winding roads with stunning views. We had a great experience here, I was with my husband and my in-laws and John was incredibly helpful. I have a cherry and apple allergy so unfortunately I was not able to try the bouquetti but he did explain how the aroma of fruit are really just the profile of the wine and not necessarily the ingredients. Also how any wine that is vintage will only have grapes, no fruit. Really changed my wine buying style! I bought the northern vineyard Pinot noir 2012 and hoping to have enough composure to wait til thanksgiving to drink it!! Also bought the table red to drink in the meantime. This place is by far the best winery around! It's off the beaten path a tad but their wine exceeds all others. You won't find much in terms of size, but you will find awards as far as the eye can see. Classy and friendly enough for the novice. The staff is passionate about wines and will even give you a lesson if you need one. Be sure to shell out the five dollars for the special tasting. It's well worth the taste experience as well as the glass. You will want to remember this place! I went to nearly all the wineries on the Leelanau Peninsula and bought nearly a case at this one. Awesome, awesome, awesome! One of the best wineries I've ever been to in the Midwest. First, the location. The winery sits among the rolling hills near Cedar. From the wine-tasting room, you get a beautiful view of Lake Leelanau and the surrounding countryside. It's a little off the beaten path but that means it's a little quieter than other wineries/tasting rooms. Second, the wines. From the first taste, I could tell why Bel Lago seems to continuously win Gold models in wine competitions. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of white wine but I thought their Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay were both excellent. I usually have a problem with white wines acidity and the high sulfites' effect on any hangovers but never a had a problem with BL's Whites. I will say though, that I don't think their Reds are quite as good as its neighbors but their Whites (and Sparklings) more than make up for it. Yes, they are a bit on the pricey side but this is GOOD wine! If you want cheap, go buy some mass-produced boxed wine at the store. Last, when we were there, we were lucky enough to have the owner himself pouring and explaining his wines. Where else do you find that!? read more

No tasting flights when we were there - had to buy a whole glass to taste anything. Apparently they have won awards for their white wines, but the woman selling the wine encouraged us to buy glasses of two of their red wines which she said were very popular with visitors. My new favorite winery in Michigan. A nice, low-key vibe in a beautiful setting, great wines, and a friendly informative staff. Got there before they opened and was greeted with coffee by Charlie Edson, one of the founders, on the front deck. While I waited we had a very nice chat about the history of the vineyard (one of the oldest in the area) and how they make their wines. A must stop for my future visits to the area. read more
