Beefeater has always been our family favorite, so to celebrate our last night living in the UK (we've been here 3 years) we decided to enjoy one last meal out. Our group was sat in the upstairs dining area which is separate from the main dining downstairs. The only people upstairs were those in our group, plus one other couple at the other end of the room. All the other tables (about 8) were completely empty.
We had placed our order and as we were waiting for food to arrive my 15 month old started getting restless and wanting to walk around instead of being buckled into his highchair. I didn't think this would be an issue since the only people in this space were member of our group (minus this one couple....who when I passed by them I was at least 2 meters from their table...who smiled at me and told me how cute my little one was...very friendly couple). We never went downstairs - just kept to our upstairs area.
I was walking the loop upstairs with my little one when the manager (Kathryn) came up and let me know this was completely unacceptable. All customers must remain seated at the table unless they had to use the toilet, and then only one member could leave at a time. I apologized and let her know it was not my intention to put anyone at risk, I was just trying to keep my baby happy until the food arrived. She was completely rude and unsympathetic, going as far to tell me I needed to train my baby to sit in his seat and that other families didn't have this issue. I have five children and found this comment completely rude. We have taken our children out several times since restaurants have reopened and they have all been happy to have business and large families that put money into their paychecks. (In fact our large group had eaten out for lunch and had zero issues). The final decision was that I was to go sit in my car with my 15 month old while the rest of my party enjoyed their meal inside. I felt completely discriminated against because i had a child.
I canceled the meals I had ordered for me and my son, packed up my diaper bag, and said goodbye to our group to head out to the car while they were allowed to stay inside and enjoy our meal. As I was leaving I asked another server if he could get the manager for me (I was thinking/hoping this Kathryn was not the real manager since she was so horrid) He asked if there was anything he could help with and I let him know i wanted to share my experience with the manager before I went to sit in the car. Kathryn came back out to speak with me and got more aggressive. I realized I was not going to get anywhere with this young lady and asked for their corporate office number so I could share my experience with them. She told me I could google it or leave a tripadvisor. I was absolutely appalled.
My server and the gentleman server I spoke to on my way out were both there watching our interaction. Both these servers could not have been kinder and I felt they were completely embarrassed about how this "manager" was treating me and my young son. The gentleman server let me know my party was standing behind me and leaving with me. I felt horrible for the staff and the kitchen since they were (i'm sure) already making our food - which for 15 people was quite a bit. My husband tried to pay for the drinks our sweet server had already delivered (3 fruit shoots and some sodas) and the servers told us it was okay that they would take care of it. I'm sure if Kathryn had any say she would have made us pay for them.
I'm sorry this is so long, but felt the management company needed to know what happened.....and since I can't speak to them, this is my only format to do so.
Also I found it very odd that for a restaurant so concerned about COVID and safety that NOT ONE employee was fitted with any type of PPE, face mask, face covering, gloves, etc. We have been out several times and every single restaurant employee has always had some sort of PPE one. Not at this beefeater.
We didn't let this horrible person ruin our last night in the UK. We decided to go back to our airbnb, order some pizza (and save a few hundred pounds on a food bill) and have a few laughs about how absolutely absurd this was. read more
