A nice selection of meat that you can get carved for you, as well as some wonderful sides. The Yorkshire pudding and gravy was sublime, and the deserts were fantastic. The beer is also quite good with a wide selection. read more

I just revisited The White Swan again on my second trip to Dorset via Southampton. I made a point to take my family there after I loved it two summers ago. Travellers: it is a perfect place to grab a memorable lunch near the airport/rail station. Lovely scenic location on a small brook (with swans...and rowboats...so English, right?), great service and very good food. On my first visit, we enjoyed a sunny day on the deck with a view of the water. On the second visit, it was rainy but we found ourselves at a comfortable booth indoors and enjoyed the coziness of the afternoon. Great menu with choices beyond the typical pub fare--though you'll find a very good quality fish and chips here as well. It's almost gastro-pub except it's not self-labelled as such! Importantly, we were there on a Sunday and it was packed with local families...so that in and of itself is a rave review. Highly recommend for a quintissential English meal...a quick ride from the airport and then you can jump on the M27 if you're heading out of town. read more

This the pub where me and my partner had our first date 7 years ago!!! Anyway I went with a group of friends for the Carvery on a Sunday. The Price for an adult was £8.90. This included one serving of meat and unlimited veg. When we arrived it was super busy and we had to wait for 45 minutes as they do not have a booking system. Then after 45 minutes we went to check and they had crossed our names off accidentally thinking they had already seated us! After being seated we went to get our dinner, the queue for this was huge and the guy serving the meat was taking his time! He was also one of the most miserable people ever and just kind of grunted at us. You have a choice of three meats and on this particular day it was turkey, beef and gammon. I asked for a bit of beef and gammon and all the group agreed the portion you receive is miniscule for the price you are paying they are making a mint! All the meat however was cooked well. You are also only allowed on Yorkshire pudding! Vegetables are as expected and you have two types of gravy, onion and meat. Food tasted good and the waiting staff were really friendly and excellent, this is the only reason I gave this place 3* and not 2. Pudding was good but a bit expensive averaging around £4. I had the bakewell sponge which was okay but the chocolate fudge cake my friends son had was lovely. We were told to avoid the custard as it was ropey and they were out of cream so only real option was ice cream! Personally I would not eat here again unless I had to and would choose the Spinnaker instead. read more

Nice location. Good beer. Unfortunately the carvery roast was the worst I have ever had. The turkey was good, not much of it but good. After that it all went down hill. Everything had dried up. All the vegetables had dried up under the heaters. The stuffing was like sawdust and when I asked if more fresh stuffing was on its way I received the most unpleasant look followed by 'sorry but it's going to be 10 minutes, no one in the kitchen seems to know what they are doing. Unfortunately many of the staff were unhelpful almost as if they had been trained to be unhelpful. Because so many things were lacking I had to ask questions. Eventually after all the snide looks O gave up as a lost cause. We ordered deserts and because they had opted to close the kitchen early, they could not complete the full order of deserts and one desert order was minus the biscuits because they had packed them away in a cupboard. Why bother offering customers deserts if you can not fulfil the request. read more

The only downside to this lovely place is that you can't pre-book a table (especially on Sundays when it's very busy). But the food is lovely as is the venue. Their menu is great and the carvery is delicious in itself. If they're having a quiet day they'll even slip you extra which I feel is a nice touch. Even on a busy Sunday I have only had to wait for a maximum of 20-30 minutes for service which isn't too bad really. Lovely for a summers day out by the river or even tucked away in the restaurant on a cold wintery day. Value for money isn't too shabby either with dishes such as the carvery baguette (baguette, carvery meat, chips & a small pot of gravy) for a fiver! The bar can be a little slow, but this can be said for anywhere that is busy. read more

Realy nice outside area near the river - got a lot of sun. I certainly would not eat there again though; the staff were rude, the service was painfully slow and when the food (eventually) arrived it was really awful. Really disappointing actually as the menu is designed to give you the impression that they have taken real care to sourse great quality ingredients but the overall effect was more mum's ben to iceland. read more

My first mistake was eating at this pub. My second mistake was paying for the dinner afterwards. I should have realised as soon as I walked in. The place looks nice, and has recently been refurbished. Of course, locals realise that this is a result of The White Swan being practically in the river, and a victim of its not infrequent flooding. We waited some time to be seated, next to the sign telling us to do so. After awhile, we walked out, and came back in. This seemed to do the trick, and we were seated promptly. In a corner. Had I been asked, I would have asked for a table outside. Sadly the food was a real disappointment. Everything bar the veg seemed to be deep fried. Bizarrely even the salmon steak was deep fried. The rice was cold, and we sent three plates of food back to the kitchen. Even this did not persuade anyone to ask whether we had enjoyed our meal. Perhaps the staff realise how poor their pub/carvery is, and don't need to ask the diners for their thoughts. The worst part of the whole piss poor experience is that diners are expected to pay a price for the food which appears wholly unconnected with quality. I have eaten better dinners at McDonald's. At least their chips are usually warm. read more

Absolutely terrible service....its not the 1st time me and the wife have been here and we have had to wait at the door where there is a sign that says "wait for service"...we gave up after 20 minutes and went to the bar, where people just kept walking in front of us! 2 young girls were serving, with no idea of where the queue was. After 40 minutes of wondering around i spoke to the manager who just told us to basically deal with it! Would never recommend this place to anyone! Not even worthy of 1 star! read more

I never normally write bad reviews!!! Having been to this pub a few times not my own choice i can comment on what it is actuall like. the service was terrible. The staff were rude brash and self righteous they wouldn't even accept my student I.D as proof of my age to buy alcohol even though my picture was on it and my birth date clearly displayed on it. The Pub Landlord was even worse openly aggresive and unhelpful. The food maybe cheap but i have eaten better macdonalds. the vegetarian options were dire and the cutlery wasn't washed correctly. Not all of the staff are so terrible though there was one young girl who was very nice and accomodating maybe she should take over the running of the place!!! The carvery is a joke. everything seems to be so deep fried that i could feel myself taking in the calories just from looking at it! The location is handy and the setting is quite nice although the airport is situated close by so every 10 minutes or so you get a jumbo jet coming into land above you making a terrible noise! some refurbs to the place have been done but it still looks very dated comparing to other restaurants i have eaten in. 1st time we went we wanted cofees but couldn't have them as the milk was gone off!!!!!!! Booked our Christmas works dinner there, changed the details and date twice...no problem. On the day food was great, staff waited for each person to finish eating before moving onto the next course. Food was hot, tasty and plenty of it. Staff were very pleasant and on their toes. Everyone had a really good time. Thank you and Happy New Year!! read more

Very Disappointing experience, the whole internal area was cold, the carvery food was cool / cold and do not expect to pay £ 5.95 which it states on the website but £ 8.75. Also it is in a nice setting but the car park is inadequately lit and it was difficult avoiding the puddles. read more

While my husband and I love the food at The White Swan and we find the staff very friendly and accommodating...the facilities are a disgrace!! The Ladies toilet at the bar end is disgusting that I will not use them...the toilets off the restaurant aren't much better... this aspect completely spoils the visit....we continue to visit because the food is so good, luckily Haskins is just up the road with clean and hygienic toilets. read more
