I had picked up some area rugs and decorative pillows for our fifth wheel and wished I had had more time to peruse the store. This time while in OKC, I saw the store nearby and decided to take a stroll. Holy moly it's huge and dare I say a bit overwhelming! You can easily set up an entire apartment, house, RV, dorm room or whatever space you need to take care of here at a very reasonable price. I was merely visiting, so I had limited space since I had already shopped galore during my stay. It didn't stop me from picking up a few small seasonal items though! The cart I was pushing had a map of the store, which was very helpful. While I didn't walk through furniture or big items, I noticed a massive amount for both indoor and outdoor. The Christmas holiday section was enormous and I had the biggest smile as I walked through. I'm somewhat regretting not buying an additional suitcase; however, I know I'll be back.

I specifically asked them, more than once, if they could guarantee it would arrive on time. Every single time, they assured me it would be ready before I moved. What they conveniently failed to mention was that it would actually be delayed by another month. I only found out after the purchase. So now, thanks to their false promises, I'll be sleeping with my mattress on the floor in my new apartment. Instead of taking responsibility, their solution was to pressure me into buying a more expensive bedroom set that happened to be in stock. It felt like they cared more about making another sale than honoring the commitment they made to me. If you value honest communication, I would recommend shopping at Living Spaces instead. Their employees don't work on commission, so there's much less incentive to make promises they can't keep just to close a sale.

They said the truck went to get them and it would all be delivered in one week, promise! Can you guess how it went the following Friday? If you guessed no furniture, you are correct. I waited another week and was once again promised delivery on Friday. Thursday I called to see when they would be delivering it and they said the delivery guys would call me on Friday and give me a 2 hour window. Friday at 4:30pm I finally called and they said they didn't have it in store and it would be delivered in one week, promise (again)!! I asked for a full refund, and the woman I was talking to said "Are you sure you don't want to wait another week?". This was so frustrating! During the entire process, they only reached out to me 2 times, and it was because I called them and left a message. They did not care that we had waited so long or that they would lose my business. My salesman was Raul who said he had been selling furniture for over 20 years. I assume that statement is about as accurate as their "3-4 week delivery". (FYI Raul tried to pressure me to take the king bed, which was in stock the day I bought everything. I am so glad I didn't because we would still be sleeping on a mattress on the floor!) Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, anywhere else!!!!!

Mathis Home is the Costco of furniture using commissioned sales reps. We arrived looking for two…read morerecliners. We found recliners we liked with a sign attached that said "$1992 Member Price" aka "Rewards Program" and "$2343 Every Day". The sales rep said for a mere $139 membership fee I could save $351 a chair and enjoy the many rewards of "Elite" membership. Good math and makes sense, but I forgot to ask the rep if this is a one-time or recurring fee? But I am presuming recurring. So, delivery was presented as $169 as a Rewards perk. But read the website: the "Elite Delivery" info on the website confirms $169 but with a big ole * beside the $169. On another page highlighting Membership "Elite Delivery" there is no asterisk but in small print says "Starting at: $298 Everyday $169 Member." But the final determinant in the delivery fee is the hidden (I couldn't find it on the website; the customer service rep sent it to me) delivery "zone chart" that says the actual delivery charge is $169 or 6.75% for Zone 1 (whichever is greater) of subtotal so my actual delivery fee was $268.92. My recliners? Sure, the delivery guys will take them implied the rep. Not true, said the delivery guy, we haven't done that in 2 years." I contacted the rep. His response was "they'll move it anywhere (on my property) you need them to move it." He should have said that to begin with. The Elite Membership states on the website that there is "Pre-delivery inspection of furniture" One of my chairs arrived with the wrong bracket that attaches the back to the chair seat. I will concur that, being in boxes, it's a little impractical to remove the bulky back and seat to examine the brackets. I then called a live service rep to ask if there was a pre-delivery inspection to verify the parts fit. He said "oh no, we don't do that, that's the factory responsibility." Well, OK. What type of furniture DOES qualify for pre-inspection? I will give a shout-out to the service department for ordering the bracket and sending the nice tech to install it. The commissioned reps are likely encouraged to push the 5-year furniture protection plans underwritten by Starr Indemnity and Liability. The rep said the best part is that if I don't use the protection plan, I get my money ($399 premium) back at the end of 5 years! WOW! Not true. What he failed to tell me is that the website says "When you purchase the Premium Protection Plan from Mathis Home, you're automatically enrolled in our No Use No Lose Program. This means that if your plan expires without a claim, you'll receive the full amount you paid for the plan back in the form of Mathis Home store credit" and "Credit may be applied toward up to 50% of the purchase price" (of another item). The "Protectall" is a decent insurance plan but does have exclusions: All sudden and accidental stains are covered unless the stain is "of and unknown origin." Failure or loosening of threads or splitting of seams is considered either a factory or workmanship defect or normal wear and tear. That's reasonable. My recommendation (I'll apply this to any retailer with commissioned sales reps) is that if the sales rep makes a representation that sounds amazing, have a tablet and pen handy, jot down the statement, and have the rep sign it. And diligently read the website as prep work, which I did not do. The last time I bought an item from Mathis was 2017, and I "assumed" (yeah, that's on me) this would be the same straightforward purchase experience. Buying a chair or two should be easy and the details correct and not obfuscated. But I'm old and the world is a changin' (to paraphrase Bob Dylan).

I hung out with Mike for a while yesterday, learning more about his great little shop in the Plaza…read moredistrict. I love that this is never the same store twice, because Mike is out searching for pieces almost as many hours per week as the store is open. Specializing in mid-century furniture and kitchenware, you'll also find lots of cool ashtrays, paintings, lamps, and home decor items. He also finds a lot of classic stereo cabinet, which can still be used. We ended up purchasing two side tables. They were in great shape, and have a lot more character than anything we would have found down on furniture row. We also got a cool old pull-down, schoolhouse-style map of South America. Since Mr K lived in Paraguay and I lived in Brasil, I think that's a cool addition to the study. I'm a fan. I'm sure this is the first of many things I'll be purchasing from Mike over the years. He posts photos to their facebook page as he makes new finds, and he will also offer to stay on the lookout for something he knows you're looking for. I can't wait to see what he finds next! Note: If you're there during business hours and the shop is not open for some reason, please call the number on the sign. He may be at an estate sale or at a private in-home appointment, but if you're there and he's not, just give him a call and he'll be back. He really does work hard to be there during regular hours. If he's not, it's a fluke.

We were greeted immediately upon entering but we had reservations at the top so didn't really browse. While I only viewed a few things from the grand staircase as we walked up to the rooftop restaurant, I definitely want to come back and explore the gallery. This place is amazing. (We stayed so long on the rooftop that we had to take the elevator down and be escorted out of the gallery.) I do wonder how many high end furniture/design places can survive here. I mean, Arhaus is literally next door.
