Thanks to Kat F. and the generosity of the Yelp Weekly sponsors, I was among the lucky handful of Yelpers who got free tix to see "Puppetry of the Penis: The Ancient Art of Genital Origami" at Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre. But before the main event, we had to endure 40-some-odd minutes of yet another tired-ass female comedienne's routine. This time, Shelley "cock and chocolate are all I want for Christmas" Marshall was serving up a big platter of mediocrity. If a raunchy version of the Cathy comics is funny to you, then you might've liked her. Personally, Marshall's brand of humor has me groaning in pain more than laughing in hysterics. She was in her element, though, as she had the almost-entirely menopausal audience in stitches. After a long intermission, the evening's stars took center stage. I was under the impression that the performers are Australian so I was a little bit disappointed when the puppeteers, Christopher Cannon and Rich Binning, turned out to be American. An Aussie accent would've made this so much funnier. They're also much younger (and cuter) than the original performers so I felt a bit like a perv staring at their peckers throughout the show. Apparently, they're in their early 20s but they look like the fresh-faced high-school kids who might shovel your snow this winter. The title of the act is also a bit misleading; Cannon and Binning do not use puppets. They stand before you completely buck naked and their only "props" are their respective schlongs which they manipulate into various poses. Some music, sound effects, and canned comedic banter intersperses each dick trick and the shapes they create run the gamut. Some are no-brainers: The Pelican, Yoda, A Man-gina; others were a "stretch": The Eiffel Tower, The Windsurfer; and still others had me scratching my head, wondering, "How in the hell...?": The Wristwatch, The Baby Bird, and their pièce de resistance, The Hamburger. Not knowing how close I'd be to the stage, I brought my binoculars. But I really didn't need them as we were about six rows back. In addition, the funky junk is displayed on a projection screen magnified large enough so you can see every hair, goose bump, and wrinkle. Kind of gross but these features really came in handy when representing KFC extra crispy chicken. Like I said, the audience was mostly older women and judging from their reactions (and rather immense proportions), I'd put the majority of them in the cock-and-chocolate camp. They were hooting and hollering, practically in tears. One woman was doubled over in so much laughter, she looked like she was going to tumble out of her balcony box seat and go splat on the floor. Overall, I'm glad the ticket was free because I wouldn't pay $50 for a performance like this. A few of the PotP moves would be sure to amuse as neat parlor tricks but an entire show devoted to them? Meh. Once you get over the shock value, the penis puppetry quickly devolves from phallic Cirque du Soleil into Cirque du So Lame. P.S. Yelp is asking, "Good for kids?" I'm going to vote yes, just cuz.

My friends and I have been going to the show for over a year now, and it's one of our favourite things to do in Toronto. The show changes every week and is based on a piece of writing that is collected from an audience member. I've seen shows where the theme has been derived from a diary entry, textbook chapter, flyer, grocery receipt, text message...seriously, all sorts of things! It's short form improv mostly, with bits of improvised writing pieces in between. I think it's a really unique and different improv comedy show from the regular 'whose line is it anyway'/theatre sports gamey stuff. It's really funny but not always in a knee-slap-in-the-face kind of a way. Sometimes it's dark, and crazy, and just downright smart. That's why it's so great. I also love that the cast hangs out after the show and isn't afraid to talk to audience members. It's a really warm and welcoming environment. In fact, the tag line for their show is "Ghost Jail Theatre: the comedy show that won't make fun of you for coming!" Love it. The cast is a mix of new kids on the Toronto comedy scene and recognizable faces about town (every time I turn on the tv I swear I see a cast member in some random commercial...and I secretly love it). I went to SoCap Comedy twice this week. Once as an audience member on the 2nd floor, and then the…read moresecond time as a producer of a comedy show on the 3rd floor. I have nothing but rave reviews on both counts. The 2nd floor is quite large, has an excellent stage, terrific lighting, and wonderful sound system, run by a total professional. I saw a show called The Practice Show which, I was told was pretty much a rehearsal with improv troupes trying out new material, new forms, etc.. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of work. The teams were tight and showed strong, listening skills, which is especially hard when you were trying out new things. It's an excellent show that is in the space most Monday nights and I definitely think you should check it out. As a producer, I produced a show on the 3rd floor, which is the smaller more intimate space. Our show was a mixture of older and younger comedians. I think it's important for the generations to play together. Renting The Cabaret 3rd fl Space at SoCap was terrific! The warmth they showed, and the level of professionalism at SoCap is unparalleled.The deal is phenomenal, and this little space is a gem! It's so nice up there, that it's like stumbling into a little secret space. This is my first choice space in Toronto!! I'm going to be at SoCap again later this month to see The Stupid Good Show with The Coincidence Men and guests, which happens the last Friday of every month. Looking forward to it!

We came for comedy and beers event for $25 pp includes a pair of beers and an improv show featuring…read morevarious groups. It was a lot of fun! Some groups were more insync than others but never a dull moment. Great way to support these groups starting out. Really entices us to take up improv as well. The final act was by Affirmative Improv and they asked the audience to submit a confession via penned note. They read them out loud and then expertly improv a few of them together in a skit. Haha did not expect a bit of musical to come out of it too. Great times and would happily do it again. The way the tables are set up, it's great for groups of 4's so perfect to make it a double date night or date night. We were able to grab the seats near the front by being just a few minutes before the show starts.

Go Chicks Ahoy!!! (That's right, three explanation points. I'm nothing if not grammatically…read moreoffensive. Bite it, Strunk Jr.) So, the championship bout was last week: Gore Gore Girls vs. Chicks Ahoy! in a battle most thought the Gore Gores would easily win...Hell, I had kind of got used to their dominance, and those blow-out scores (as noted in my review). I was hoping for a fun game. What'd I get? Sheer domination by the Chicks Ahoy! WOO! The game started with relative equality, but then the Gore Gore's "Bambi" took to the track for her first jam. Bambi is one of the league's best offensive players, lanky and awkward but fast and agile. Did she rack up a 20 point jam for a big early lead? No. Not even close. She got *brutalized*. I mean rocked, and the Chicks sent a defining early message: the Gore Gores were gonna get hurt at every turn, and every point was gonna come with a price. And it just got worse from there as the Chicks built up a sizeable lead while mercilessly punishing the Gore Gores. By game's end, the Gore Gores were down (I think) three players, and stars Bambi and Dust Bunny had taken turns as blockers due to the injury depleted lineup. The score differential was insurmountable, and the Gore Gores were simply playing for pride. Bambi suffered badly in this game, beaten up every time she took to the track, and to see her come out and serve as a blocker late in the game with the score out of reach... damn. That's guts, man, determination and heart all the way. My hat's off to the Chicks -- especially Mega Bouche, Nasher the Smasher, and Marmighty, the gals who really set the tone for the game and punished the defending champions en-route to becoming the ToRD 2011 Champs! I can't wait for next season!

I'm pretty sure the girls around me (roller derby type girls, if you will) were all fine with beer, because they are tough and strong and confident in their womanhood. But I'm not, and I like to drink a sweet drink outta a straw. So keep this in mind, and if you're like me, bring a water bottle with your own beverage choice inside. 2) It's pretty expensive. Ours was a double header, so I guess it is like 4 HOURS of entertainment, but you're also sitting on a metal bench for that amount of time. $18 at the door. Each. So....more than a movie, which is pretty much my bench mark for "things that are too expensive to do on a date". 3) Parking is free. Everyone was super nice and the audience was totally into it. 4) It's way in the middle of no where. For me, at least. And everyone else but the guys who work at Idomo. 5) They sold my friend 50/50 tickets and then I said, "You should find out when the draw is," and then they said it was basically 3 hours from then. I understand WHY they do that - so that everyone wants to stay WELL past when they would - but they should mention this when selling, because it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I visited this theater for a performance by Soulpepper theater company. While each performance is…read moreunique so I am going to rate this theater based upon the things matter to a performance area. I watched a performance that was 60 min long at Michael Young Theater which apparently is the smaller of the two theaters. I found the the view was unobstructed for all the seats with a good view of the stage even from the last row of seats. The lighting and mix media were used well in the performance I saw as otherwise the stage was spartan for this particular play. The seats were unfortunately not comfortable. The main lobby area is nice and inviting and plenty of drinks/food items available for consumption. One is even allowed to bring in drinks into the theater which is becoming rare and rare. Bonus points for the extremely clean washroom. Getting here depends on your mode of transport if you Uber/Drive here getting here is ez. Public transport even with the new street car isn't very frequent and it is a good 10-15 min ride from King station. 3.5 star.

The Young Centre is one of my favourite places to see theatre in the city. I've had lots of…read morememorable experiences here. On the Eastern end of the Distillery District, it's close to lots of good dining and shopping options and you can make a day of it. The Young Centre is home to Soulpepper Theatre, George Brown Theatre School, Global Cabaret Festival, and the occasional dance event. There are 3 theatres ranging from small and intimate (The Tank House, where I saw "Paper Series" by Cahoots Theatre Company), inbetween (Michael Young Theatre, where you can catch "Kim's Convenience" on now!), and grand (Marilyn and Charles Baillie Theatre, where they show the biggest productions like "A Christmas Carol", "Parfumerie", "Our Town", etc.). Even in the largest theatre, there are almost no 'bad' seats in the house (with the exception of the 2nd level, anything really far on the side, where you sit on chairs instead of regular seats). I really like the warm and unpretentious vibe of the space. Lots of long, wooden communal tables, exposed brick, and a cozy fireplace in the lobby make intermissions more fun. The box office and ticket pick-up desk are always running efficiently. The little cafe in the lobby is surprisingly good too. I once ate a meal there because I didn't have time to go to a restaurant. They have a small selection of toasted paninis, crepes, and salads in addition to the cookies and muffins. In terms of drinks, they make a good latte and have a decent wine selection + beers. Overall, the variety is so much better than concessions stands at other theatres like the Sony Centre, Four Seasons, Factory Theatre, etc.! It's nice to be able to find something other than candies and overpriced mini Haagen-Dazs. Finally, washrooms are clean and big, and there is almost never a line! Great performers deserve an equally great performance venue and this is it!
