This is more a review of their management than their baking. Visited their shop three times over the last two weeks. Each time we discussed we were helping our child pre plan the wedding as they live out of the area. Each time we told the person why were there, told them the date, the possible venues and bought a dozen cupcakes to try. They said until they picked the reception hall they couldn't reserve the date or tell us whether its available. Why? No idea as the halls were all within 10 miles. Today they decided on the Radison and my wife went to the bakery and the lady behind the counter pulls out a book and says "sorry we are booked". I understand it is possible to get booked up but why couldn't they take the 2 seconds to look at the book to see if the date was open the first time we walked in. read more

I had an oversized cupcake to share with my hubby. They frosted it with buttercream and the coated it with dry crumbs. The combo of the dry crumbs and dry buttercream was atrocious. The cake was ok, nothing special. But there was a raspberry filling of sorts..... It was thick basically a thick, fake fruit flavored gel. Gross. I have been to this bakery several times since moving to the area about a year ago, and I've never had a bad experience. In fact, my 2 year old often requests a trip to the bakery because he loves their cookies. They always have a great selection of items on display, and I've never purchased an item that wasn't fresh. They have a wide variety of coffee cakes, danishes, donuts, and specialty items like cupcakes. Their crusty Vienna bread always seems to sell out, which is understandable, because it's the perfect compliment to any meal. The staff is always friendly and very helpful. Just excellent! I had heard about them from a friend and only had a month to plan my wedding. When we walked in I didn't think there would be a chance I'd be able to get a cake the way I wanted without even making an appointment, but after waiting just a few minutes the owner, who already had an appointment had her daughter work with us. What a great business...not only were they able to make the cake we wanted, but they were able to squeeze us into a delivery that day as long as we could talk our venue into an early delivery. We did, and the cake was a hit. They really know what they are doing. Our cake was beautiful!! The taste was just as we had tasted at the shop, and they left a certificate at the venue when they made the delivery promising a small cake for our anniversary. Great, great donuts. They are big, not too sweet, just the right price for them. These are really cake donuts, not the "bleached white flour" stuff you get almost anywhere else. The pastries they sell there are also delicious, different from what you see around, and again, not too sweet. Nothing else to add, that's why my review is....short and sweet! read more

Excellent cakes! We've ordered several cakes from here and they've always been so good and are made well. Some of the reviews referenced having a difficult time trying to order a wedding cake etc, and I can echo that. We had wanted them to do our wedding cake but when I called to set up a tasting they didn't have availability for months which seems odd. Nice little place in Crown Point. Went in for a quick last minute cake. Had allot of options to choose from, went with a chocolate frosting and fudge filled yellow cake. I'm not much of a chocolate person myself, but everyone else stated how good it was. Will definitely try again. read more

My quest for the best donuts in the region took me to this little gem of a place. I'm not sure why some bakeries decide to use an oven instead of deep frying and offering vegan food options when pastries and natural dairy go hand in hand. There are no political motivations behind their business here. No couples pretending to be gay or lesbian in an obvious phony attempt to promote a political issue here. No intolerance of those with whom they may disagree. It's simply the best place in this town to grab a coffee and donut without the risk of being politically influenced in any way, unlike other donut makers in the region. read more

Nadine is so professional and passionate about her cakes, I would highly recommend her. I didn't even want a wedding cake but my mom insisted Beck's is the best and I would be impressed with her services. Again, mom was right because after meeting with Nadine I was more excited about the wedding cake than anything else. I met Nadine having no idea what kind of cake I would like. She had many different cake samples with different frostings and fillings neatly laid out during the cake tasting. She instructed which flavors complimented each other and have received rave reviews in the past. She showed beautiful photos of all her work and asked what I liked and disliked about each cake and why. She narrowed down my selections so quickly then drew up a beautiful cake design specific to me. I wish all my vendors were able to efficiently assist me in making decisions as Nadine did. She is truly talented. We received countless feedback on how delicious our cake was. We ordered an extra sheet cake so we could have some left over. At the end of the night there was none left, people were asking for seconds! Nadine is so gifted. read more

I have to say that the product at Crown Bakery is yummy... that isn't the problem. I agree that the problem is not only with management, but their customer service as well. For the 4th of July, I ordered 5 dozen cupcakes... placed the order a good 2 weeks in advance. They said they wouldn't be open on the 4th and we agreed I would pick up on the 3rd. That being said - some cupcakes require refrigeration, but I didn't give it a second thought.. as a cupcake buyer for many parties, I've always picked up boxes or holders that have a dozen cupcakes each. No problem! I get there to pick them up and they bring out a box holding ALL FIVE DOZEN CUPCAKES: a box that would hold a full sheet cake. I asked them what the heck I was supposed to do with a box that big and they just kind of shrugged... sorry, this is how we box them. REALLY? I spend almost $100 on cupcakes and now should not only juggle them to get them home, but how do I refrigerate them? No reply, just kind of a 'whatever' attitude. It was rainy and windy... the top blew off the box (I was parked at the curb), and as I crouched to get the box low enough to slide into my minivan, it started to buckle (a combination of NO support at the bottom of the box and thin, now wet, box). I was livid! I go back in with the crumpled lid and a lady, completely nonplussed, says "Wasn't it taped down?". As soon as I got home, they had to be plated, but could not be wrapped for a couple of hours due to very soft frosting. The Buckling Incident claimed about 6 of the cupcakes: pretty smushed. So much for anything more than stopping in for the occasional treat. Apparently, they are blessed enough to have such a large client base that they can afford to lose patrons along the way without worry. They certainly aren't the only great bakery in the area. They won't be getting anymore orders from me. read more

My daughter is getting married next year and a friend gave me the name of this bakery to make her wedding cake - we looked at pictures on their website and the cakes were pretty - it said to call to set up wedding cake consultation. My daughter called to make and appointment in the evening because she works until 5:00 (the website lists the hours until 6:00) - she spoke with Cheryl who was very unpleasant, unhelpful and told her that the "wedding cake decorator" doesn't meet with anyone after 5:00. My daughter then asked if her fiancé could come by himself one afternoon - Cheryl told her that she would have to check with the "wedding cake decorator" and that she would call her back ( my daughter also told Cheryl that they were going back to school in August, so he would like to come before that). This was several weeks ago and she still had not heard back from Cheryl - I decided today I would call, surly my daughter had to have been mistaken about how the call went ,because certainly a bakery that is providing a cake for your once in a lifetime special day would defiantly want to provide you with excellent customer service and be as accommodating as possible - not short and rude- right? Well, Cheryl answered when I called too -- my daughter was soooooo correct in her account of the way her conversation went - the worst thing though was that Cheryl said she had talked to my daughter - did not apologize for not calling her back - and gave me the same unhelpful information in the same unfriendly way. Then when I asked if there was anyway the "wedding cake decorator" could meet with them Friday afternoon or one evening during the week - she told me she would have to go check with the "wedding cake decorator" - when she came back I was told that the "wedding cake decorator" could not meet with them on Friday afternoon and would not meet with them any evening after 5:00. I asked who the owner of the bakery was and she said that the "wedding cake decorator" was the Owner - when I asked her name I was told that she was not allowed to give out that information - LOL! I then realized - if the OWNER did not care about providing good customer service and trying to accommodate customers - then why would the employees! I truly hope that no one else has this terribly disappointing experience with this bakery. I know we will find a "wedding cake decorator" that will provide a beautiful cake as well as a wonderful experience for my daughter's once in a lifetime special day - so I will repost this along with their contact information when we do! read more

If picking 0 stars was an option, I would! My fiancé and I were doing cupcakes for our wedding. After 2 weeks of multiple calls and different stories on how they do things with deliveries and pricing, we finally spoke to the "manager". After she changed the price a few times and told us that it would be a waste of her time to do it, she then went on to tell us our idea for cupcakes was a bad choice and that we should do a cake. With this conversation I told her that we did not want a cake, hence why we were inquiring about cupcakes and not a cake. She became very rude and then ended with the statement, "I don't want your business, take it somewhere else". This bakery had decent cupcakes. However if your planning on doing any type of big purchase that would require a conversation longer than "hello, thank you", I highly suggest you find another bakery. She was so unprofessional and rude that it amazes me that they are still in business. In response to Nadine's comment: I find it extremely odd that I am just now receiving a response almost a year later along with a very different version of what actually happened. If you were as polite and as "apologetic" as you were in your response during the whole ordeal, I wouldn't have been so upset. You were one of the rudest and nasty people I have ever had to deal with. Believe me, your cupcakes weren't that great too put up with you. read more

I am sharing my experience with my fellow community people in Crown Point. This is not the 1st time this has happened. This bakery will not take the extra step to make their customers happy. I wanted to give them a fair shake, so I went to another local business to ask other people's opinions. All 12 people gave bad reviews. One story, another local wanted a baptism cake made who wanted a shape as cross. They refused. This customer no longer shops there and states she doesn't know why anyone would go there. I am a volunteer of our community to help the state of Indiana. I have been involved in this for 5 years. Everything we do for Indiana is free. We pay for our own gas, lodging, etc. When I went to this bakery to ask for a cake for a retirement for our kernel with a eagle on it. They wanted to charge me $45 for just the outline of the eagle on a flat cake. I placed my order and was told to come pay in 2 days. When I went to pay, they refused to make my cake. They said I missed my payment time by 1 hour. These people made no effort to try to work with me. The cake was going to be $91 for just the plain cake with an eagle. With a $5 charge if I wanted writing. They were very arrogant and did not care about pleasing their customers. I would never go back there. They are not supporting the community. These people need to gain a heart and realize the community is what keeps them in business. read more

Seems like this place has no interest in weddings not just from my unpleasant visit but also from the other wedding related reviews. The owner is distasteful and was talking to me like I was an idiot. This was my very first time ever being at this bakery and I knew within the first few minutes I would be taking my business elsewhere. When I told her I wanted to do cupcakes instead of a big wedding cake she rolled her eyes and said it would be 350$ or more. I felt very judged. As if she was giving me high prices off of the top of her head in hopes to shut me down like I couldn't afford her or something. She was very rude. You would think for someone doing a big party and someone who is a first time customer you would treat them with respect or even break a smile. Needless to say unless you are wanting to deal with an arrogant prick I would not waste your time or money here. Especially on your big day. read more

I went to Becks two days before Thanksgiving. I wanted to buy a pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Here is my experience: They had just two pies, one apple, one pumpkin. I was the only person in the store at 9:30 am. I asked if they could put whipped cream on the pumpkin pie and was told, "No." I was willing to pay extra. I also looked at their little fudge brownies. The price was $2.19. I asked how many brownies do you get for $2.19. The answer was one. Then I turned my head and noticed some cookies, about 20 wrapped in plastic bags on a counter. The price? $20.00. This place had little inventory, very high prices, a definite drop off from the bakeries I know in Chicago like Weber's Bakery. At Weber's during Thanksgiving time you have to take a number and wait. The line could be 50 people. And the selection is excellent. And they always put whipped cream on my Thanksgiving pumpkin pie and it was always super delicious. So I bought a ten dollar coffee cake and left Becks thinking, "I understand why I was the only customer at Becks during Thanksgiving." Never go there again. read more

Beck's provided us our wedding cake this past November and I have nothing but wonderful things about them. They initial meeting went well, the flavors were great, and the decorator was very helpful in making sure that we got exactly what we needed. The cake came out exactly how we has pictured it tasted wonderful. They were also very responsive when a couple days before the wedding I needed to add a sheet cake due to a lot of last minute RSVP changes. They accommodated us and we had plenty of cake for our reception. I am very happy with their service and their product. read more

This is not a review of the cake; as the wedding cake was delicious, and turned out beautifully. I do feel like there is an issue with the management. My husband and I are from out of town (came back to Crown Point area to get married in our hometown). It was hard to coordinate everything, since since we live about three hours away, but we did our best to make everything work. I felt like Beck's was less than flexible with us on timing, however I tried to understand that we were not their only customer. My main complaint is with our anniversary cake. We were given a voucher at our wedding to be able to get a free anniversary cake in the same flavor that we had for our wedding. Unfortunately, it is not always easy for us to travel back to our hometown. We had several job commitments that prevented us from traveling back to Crown Point until about 2 months after our anniversary. I called and explained this, and asked if we could plan a later date to come and pick up the anniversary cake, and I was told no. I explained that we were unable to drive 3 hours there and back just to pick up a cake. They didn't seem to care, and I never received my anniversary cake. As much as I loved my wedding cake, I would not go back. The management seems to think that the customers should work around them. The common complaint with the reviews seems to be the customer service, so I know that I am not alone. My word of advice to management is to get your act together. You are working with excited couples, who have chosen you to help out on their special day. I would advise future couples to look elsewhere, not because of the quality of the bakery, but because you will have to deal with their management. read more
