As an American visiting this part of Canada for the first time, I'd heard that Beaver Tails were a must try. They were right. We got these for breakfast, got two to try between myself, my wife and daughter. We didn't realize how big these are! My wife said that they must be going trying to be close to the life size beaver tail. We had to try the Classic of course and also ordered a Hazel Amour. Both were delicious. The classic cinnamon sugar was really good and a bit messier than I expected since the cinnamon sugar dust flaked off often. The Hazel Amour was really nice, rich, and filling. It was the first time my daughter had tried a nutella type spread, so naturally she was pretty excited. Definitely a must try. Next time I know to either get minis or just one to share. read more

I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the beavertail I got. To preface this, I'm Chinese American and I don't love a lot of fried, very sweet desserts (funnel cakes, donuts, etc.) BUT these beavertails are surprisingly light and soft! I'm really glad I got the pistachio one, because it was a perfect sweet and nutty balance. I would've loved to have some chocolate drizzle on it though! We had a very unfortunate experience during our visit. While my wife was waiting in line, someone behind her grabbed her credit card and ran off. Judging by the staff's reaction, it seemed like this wasn't the first time something like this had happened -- yet there were no warnings or visible precautions in place for customers. The area around Byward Market felt unsafe, with a noticeable presence of aggressive panhandlers and no sign of security. It made us uncomfortable enough to cut our visit short. I have been telling childhood stories of the good ol' BeaverTails to my daughter and finally got a chance to treat her to one while in the market. We went with the classic cinnamon and sugar. I stayed in ByWard Market years ago on vacation and dropped by for my BeaverTails fix. I guess I must have missed the review opportunity. Early last month, I was in the area. I ended up doing a snack-hopping exercise after a late lunch consisting of beef noodle soup and wontons. Sorbet, fruit and dessert fondue, and a mocha shake preceded dropping by this BeaverTails location. It was the yummy smell that drew me in. Deep-fried dough with toppings? Yes, please! I have two go-to BeaverTail flavours: - Bananarama - Apple pie I felt like the latter. The best part coming here at around 5 pm? No lineup! The nicest, friendliest man helped me with my order. I paid with a credit card. I tipped and was done. It took no time for my apple pie BeaverTail to be handed over to me. I thanked the man and looked around for a place to sit down. I found a wooded bench around the corner from this BeaverTails store. I was still looking at it while I was eating my apple pie BeaverTail. The apple pie BeaverTail was hot. I actually had to sit there and wait for it to cool down. It was so messy to eat, but was worth it. I also wasn't a local, so looking like a slob was fine. This snack hit the spot. I loved the dough, the chunks of apple, and the saucy pie filling that married everything together. It did taste like a deconstructed apple pie, but eaten by either shovelling it into my mouth or ripping it apart because it was a decent weight. Thank goodness I had napkins. I needed them. So messy. Ottawa isn't a pretty city (so many empty storefronts, so much open-air drug use, so many drab concrete buildings), so I don't have anything positive to say about the vibes here. But the beavertails are very yummy! I had a Sunrise -- cinnamon sugar on top, served with a lemon wedge. When I read "lemon" as one of the flavors, I assumed it was lemon-infused sugar. Nope, just a lemon wedge sitting on top of my treat. I was skeptical. But I squeezed plenty onto the beaver tail, and it had fantastic flavor! I may go back tomorrow and have another of the same. Since you can only find this in Canada I thought I should check it out. The wait staff was nice and she said since it was my first BeaverTail best not to have it too sweet. This makes sense as I always like to have a base or standard to rare against. Got the cinnamon sugar for $6.50 and it was good but it kinda tasted like a flat churro or an Auntie Annie's cinnamon sugar pretzel but flat. It was a bit greasy but it was fun to say I tried it. Would I order it again? It's a fun the thing to get when you're walking around a touristy site. This food stall is the original BeaverTails restaurant, located in the Byward Market Square in Ottawa. BeaverTails is one of the iconic Canadian food items. We were on vacation from Toronto and the day we decided to buy BeaverTails was a day of a snowstorm with small hail hitting our faces. Despite the storm, the food stall (located outside!) was constantly busy all day! We did visit a few other restaurants and they had very little business. It shows you how high the demand is for BeaverTails! We bought the Garlic Butter and Cheese ($7.50) and Pecan Pie ($7.50). First, the Pecan Pie. It had many crushed pieces of pecans sitting in a maple spread. Then there was chocolate sauce on top. Delicious! Second, the Garlic Butter and Cheese. In order to get a good picture of it with the food stall in the background, I had to fight the freezing weather and hail! By the time I was finished, my warm BeaverTail was frozen! As they say ... camera eats first! The next day, we managed to use a toaster oven with a steam function to bring the Garlic Butter and Cheese back to life. This time, we got melted cheese which made it fun to eat it, like a flat oval pizza! The taste was quite good. We were recommended this flavour from another foodie couple we knew from Toronto who happened to be there 2 days before us! In addition to the unique varieties of BeaverTails, they also sell hot beverages, poutine, and ice cream. The only issue is that most people have to stand around to eat, which is not great in snowfall and rain. Secret: we found a little seating area inside Byward Market. Shhh... don't tell anyone; it is just for readers of my review! Pam and Grant Hooker were founders and owners of BeaverTails. In 1978, they started selling these pastries at the Killaloe Fair, about 1 hour west of Ottawa. In the late 1970s, they moved the operation to Ottawa. They have a delicious Canadian speciality called Beavertails the staff was friendly and helpful. It's a small kiosk near the market with an obvious sign that can't be missed. I was told to get a Beaver Tail as soon as I got to Canada and to my surprise I was so happy it was a delicious pastry and not an actual beaver LOL. I got the Oreo one and it was amazing. For real? Have I never reviewed BeaverTails? So pretty much anyone who comes to Ottawa has to have a BeaverTail. BeaverTails are pieces of flattened fried dough with different toppings on them. They are similar to "Elephant Ears" sold at carnivals. There are sweet flavours with toppings like chocolate hazelnut spread, maple spread, apples and cinnamon, and bananas. They also had savoury toppings like garlic butter and cheese, but I think they might have discontinued these. They are very decadent. When my mom was still living in Toronto, every time she came to visit me in Ottawa, she wanted a BeaverTail, lol. This location is essential just a kiosk, you can't actually go inside it. You just stand outside and order at the window and they pass it to you when it's ready. There's often a lineup. It's right in the Byward Market, so a very touristy part of town. Omg must try in Ottawa! They have different flavors, all sweet except for one savory one and that was the one I got while my husband got the triple one with Reese's pieces, peanut butter and Nutella. So beaver tail pastry is basically a fried dough (not dense or flavored) that's flattened and wide like a beaver tail, I suppose. And they add different toppings on there depending on what you order. The triple one was good according to him. It came out hot and amazing on a cold day outside! My garlic, butter and cheese one was delectable! So much garlic. One thing I wish they had done was melting the cheese instead of sprinkling on top of the tail... but the way they're making it, doesn't look like there's a toaster oven to melt the cheese.
