My friend and I wanted to get hair cut on a Sat afternoon. We didn't make any appointments but I did call in the salon to see if we can get a stylist 15min later. The owner asked if we are ok with any stylist then we can come on by. We got there about 15 minutes after I called and one of the stylist name Summer was able to start shampooing for my friend right away. I waited about 15minutes and the other stylist name Leo was able to help me. The price is very reasonable. $35 + tips for Shampoo,cut and style. For this price, I wouldn't expect a whole lot but Leo who cut my hair did took his time and did my hair cut for about 10-15 minutes. I like that the wait wasn't long and still great quality cut. He told me he have been a hairstylist in china for over 9 years and then 2 more years of working as a stylist in this salon. I can tell he is quite experience. While I was there, many walk ins asking for the owner who I didn't communicate with so I don't know his name but he seems to be the popular one. His schedule was packed and he would tell the walk ins to come back another day. However, both my friend and I were very satisfied of our cut. Highly recommend both Leo and Summer. I know they work on both days Sat., and Sundays. I paid cash so I'm not sure if they take credit cards. Overall very good experience and we like our cut. We would come back. The hard part is parking like always in Chinatown. read more

Jay gave me this Y2K highlight hairstyle that I love. He's super patient and focused and is a bit of a perfectionist. He's good with balayage and other complicated hair dye styles. Really good service and reasonable price. Will definitely go back. read more

This place is good in so many way, skills, price, and effective of the job. However, the only thing to complain about is the wait time. Reservations mean little to places like this. If you come, make sure to pick a non-busy day for them and for you. read more

What a great experience with the owner:) Highly recommend it for the price and attitude. I am looking forward to do a darker Grey color for my hair which I know it may only stay a while. My hair bleached 2-3 times an half year ago, so there were 3 inches black hair from the root. He helped me blended the color to brown to grey. I know you guys interest about the price. It only costs cash $200ish for 1 time bleaching, haircut and hair coloring. This is a really good price if you can find in SF. read more

As an individual who enjoys not paying for his haircuts... this place makes the money worth it. I came in with a friend around 5pm on a Friday before my finals because i wanted to at least look good while i'm dyin. It was about a 10 min wait which is pretty good considering I was a walk in. I had gel in my hair from the day and the stylist washed my hair before cutting and brought me to the chair. I told him my measurements and he asked if I wanted to keep the same style as before. Overall, the mans had skill. He was very careful on making sure I was even on both sides and even tried to make small talk with me. He washed my hair one more time and asked if I wanted to re-gel my hair which I declined. The total came out to be $25 (because of the wash) which I thought was reasonable. Will definitely come back for my future cuts! read more

It seems to have a very Taiwanese/Hong Kong vibe. They do not speak very much English, but I gave very basic instructions they made it work. For $20 men get a WASH BEFORE and AFTER the cut AND then, they STYLE your hair after with gel. I went with a friend and within the last 5 haircuts we've tried we'd both say top 2 for style and value in SF. If I find myself coming back here more, I might bump this up a rating to 5. Although I went for a more normal cut, some clients got some super interesting haircuts while we were there. CASH ONLY. read more

I am new to SF and was recommended a few different places to get my haircut from South City to the Castro. A few weeks a friend needed a hair cut asked him where he went and if I could go. We went to Beauty Style Exchange and loved my hair cut. One of my really critical friends said it was her favorite haircut see has seen me get. It is very affordable and the service is fast and friendly. The guy who cuts my hair is extremely detailed with the cut and I noticed from watching the others cut hair that they were all very detailed. I'll be back every two weeks for a fresh cut! read more

I felt so humiliated when I went to this salon to purchase some hair product save my damaged hair today. I went there on and off for the past few years. I explained to the owner that someone permed my hair without my consent when I only asked for a hair treatment, he was smirking and his employee, who was working on someone's hair, was laughing at my incident because of their disbelief what happened. I am writing this review and let them know and yelpers - shit does happen!! I hate to say that I never have any good experiences with any hair salon in Chinatown. I don't know how they had passed the cosmetology board test and how can they call themselves hairstylists. they lack of experience, skills, understanding, patience and empathy. First of all they play the blame game on you that you did something wrong with your hair instead of helping you, then they use hair conditioner instead of real hair treatment for your hair!!!! they do use regular hair conditioner for so called hair treatment!!!! While my wife and I were visiting SF this Christmas break, I had realized that my haircut was long overdo! My friend Henry suggested this place and I reluctantly said yes. I was first greeted by a little lady that washed my hair and then I was directed to my haircut station. As I sat down my wife showed the hair stylist a picture of the haircut I wanted and he just nodded his head and went to work. My stylist was so precise and efficient. At the end of my haircut my hair was washed once more. They delivered exactly what I was looking for. Definitely coming back when I'm in the area! read more

I've had each barber cut my hair at this place and they were all consistent and took their time to make sure my hair looks at its best. John, one of the barbers, cuts my hair the most as the usually swing by every 1-2 months. He truly has an eye for detail and gives out great recommendations. I got my haircut yesterday and John suggested a new style instead of the same old haircut that I usually get. I didn't think too much of it as I trust John with my hair the most. His recommendation was better than expected and love the new haircut style that I have. Highly recommend coming here as they are consistent with their barbers and all have great positive attitude and attention to detail. read more

I am very happy with my visit today. Allen assisted me and I would say he did not disappoint. He took his time to shave my hair, not only he was meticulous, but he was also very gentle. Allen was really good at what he was doing, and he was friendly and nice as well. I got a simple man haircut, but normally I would be very particular about my hair. This time, this guy saved my day. I would highly recommend Allen to anyone who wanted to get a fresh haircut. read more

Elaine is THE BEST. Too bad she barely comes to work anymore. My husband and I have followed Elaine from salon to salon for years. We love her work. Unfortunately, she barely comes into the salon anymore. She's a no-show even when you make an appointment with her. That's very frustrating when I make the effort to go to SF Chinatown, only to find out that she's not showing up for the appointment I made just the day before with her on the phone. One of the times when she told me that she wouldn't be coming in, she recommended Kenny. The only positive thing about Kenny is that he works fast. Just don't expect him to cut your hair the way you want. I asked him to cut even my previously asymmetric cut, he said no. I asked him to layer my hair, he said no. So I ended up with a mushroom cut. NEVER AGAIN. He did a pretty awful on my husband on another day also. So why should I keep going only to be disappointed by Elaine's disappearing act? I shouldn't. read more

Today was the first time I had Elaine as my stylist and I couldn't have been happier! Even though I just went in to get a trim (extra layers) and to touch up my bangs, I came out with an edgier style to my normal haircut! I've always had layered hair with bangs but with a plain-Jane, conservative look. She helped me cut my bangs differently (per request) and gave me several layers in my hair so it gave me more volume at the crown. She also gave me tips on how to maintain and style my bangs to retain it's shape. Elaine took her time to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted and didn't stray from my comfort zone (unlike other stylists where if you ask them to cut no more than two inches, they cut off three). I usually really dislike awkward silences between me and my stylists considering I have broken Cantonese, but she still made efforts to try and converse with me, which I really appreciated :D Other than the entire wonderful experience, I had a wash and cut for $18!!! AAAAAHHHH I'M SO EXCITED :p read more

Wows. This place actually did a pretty shit color job. Missed a bunch of places on my hair, looks like a third grader went crazy with some crayons and colored out of the lines! Can't believe I let this place charge $180 for this horrific cut and color of a mess. Only reason I'm giving it 1 star is because the haircut itself is pretty good, but dear GOD, don't come here for a color job. They'll rip you off like they ripped me off! The Beauty Style Exchange is where I always go to have my hair cut. Though the salon can be busy the staff is always extremely cordial, with greetings upon arrival and check-ins to let me know I haven't been forgotten. Allen gave me his number so I can text him ahead of time and see if he can fit me in, which is a huge convenience. Plus, he is very professional and attentive when giving a hair cut and seems motivated to give the very best cut he can. He never hustles me out of there, but rather takes his time to make the work quality. I really appreciate Allen and the Beauty Style Exchange. read more

Decided to give this place a try since I work in the fidi. Came in asking for a specific hairstyle, I walked out with something completely different. Stylist told me my hair isn't fit for that hairstyle and won't work. I told him I've had it in the past and it works out fine. Still decided to give me a different cut than what I've asked for. I walked in at 4pm on a weekday and they were able to accommodate me for a Japanese hair straightening. The price was reasonable and they were all very nice and professional. They told me it's going to take about 2.5 to 3 hours. I have very thick hair, it took John over an hour to just cut my hair. The rest of the process took longer than expected due to the quality of my hair. John did not rush through the process. He took the time to cut and style my hair. By the time I got done, it was already past 8:30, which is an hour past their closing time. Thumbs up for him! Will definitely go back. read more

This place is great. Was searching for a place to get a quality haircut and this place definitely delivers. Jay is friendly, meticulous, and always does a great job with my hair. Have been coming for months and have never had any complaints - some of best haircuts I've had are from here. Some of the lower Yelp ratings are based on the previous owner/ownership so the overall rating doesn't do this place justice. What a terrible experience for me and my friend..Worst hair cut ever..my friend made an appointment for 1:00 with Chris ..she waited for him for more than 20 min so it doesn't matter if u make an appointment or not they don't care..Chris started cutting her hair like a few minutes then he walked away to check on another customer.. Back and forth. He was totally distracted.. If he didn't have the time for her he should've told us ahead of time.. My friend didn't get her hair wash but he charge her full price $20 ( price for haircut $10 up) so that's double the price..my friend didn't like her haircut I feel bad cuz I told her about this place. I got fool by their reviews. i think who ever gave them 5 stars are their friends.. my stylist was even worst he was so tough pulling my hair I was screaming but he didn't apologize or anything .. did not ask how I want my hair cut or how long I want it cut.. He was trying to convince to get the Japanese straightening the whole time.. I told him I just want my hair look natural but he didn't listen just kept talking how nice it would look on me.. When i got home my mother in-law asked if the person who cut my hair got a license or not cuz it looks so ugly.. The layers are not even on both side. I'm so upset about coming here.. Bad service, bad haircut not worth a penny.. It is my first review at yelp It's bad enough for me to write a review to warn other people not to come here.. So, I am writing this review for my fiance, who attempted to get her hair straightened at this location about a year ago. She has gone to a different salon directly across the street a couple times before, but this newer looking salon seemed like it may be better. She was hoping to get a nice straightening for her hair to look nice for her new job, but sadly we were wrong, and result was beyond horrible. So she spent ~$160, which was more than the salon across the street, and you guys probably won't even believe what I'm about to write. Her straightening ONLY LASTED TWO DAYS. Yes, ONLY TWO DAYS. We both don't know what in the world they did to DESTROY her hair, but after two days she was left with horribly damaged and dead hair. They completely ruined her hair. It has been a year since it happened and her hair is still completely damaged and ruined. She has spent far more money trying to fix what they did and it was just a completely horrible experience. Not only did they ruin her hair, but she has spent a year constantly struggling to try and repair what they damaged while dealing with the negativity of having her hair look messed up. It really took a toll on her. Oh yea, and apparently one of the main guys who butchered her hair got aggressive and rudely demanded a tip from her before the straightening process was even over. Flipping absurd. I have been wanting to write this review since the day we found out her hair was destroyed, but we couldn't remember the name of the salon or find it on yelp/google maps at the time. I went out of my way during a visit to SF this weekend to walk to this exact location again to find out the details and write this review. I would give this a ZERO STAR if I were able to. Stay far away. read more
