Julia is an amazing talent and beautiful person. Her expertise is extraordinary. I had a difficult…read moretime finding a stylist that lived up to my standards (hehe) since moving back home. The best stylists in my experience have been from Japan and Korea. They know my hair best and their techniques are first class. I finally found my stylist, but she is on Oahu which means I need to spend extra money to fly over to get my hair done. That's how selective I am with stylists and important it is to trust anyone with my hair. Since I can't see Naomi at Raiz salon on Oahu often, I needed to find someone locally. I've come across some good stylists, but not great. With a recommendation from my cousin, who raved about her technique (the style and technique my asian stylists have), I wanted to make an appointment right away. Upon our first meeting, we clicked. I brought in samples of what I liked, had a great consultation, got to see some of her expertise at work and was blown away. I call her "Edward Scissorshand" lol I felt confident she knew her stuff. I trusted her with my hair. Sold! I never felt as excited about getting my hair cut with anyone other than my regular stylist on Oahu and in Colorado. She's also a great person to talk to. My 1 hour hair appt became a 2hour getaway. Thanks, Julia! She moved into a smaller space at Harbor Mall, but I like that it's cozier and more personal, rather than sitting in a room with a bunch of strangers with hair problems and their kids and families who tag along. lol With her expertise, I was amazed at the affordable cut for my long locks. I am used to paying at least $60 for just a cut/shampoo/style. I paid half of what I normally do. Cost is never an issue with me if it means getting a very good one. Thank you Julia! I'd like to see more exclusive hair products from Asia, but the "Miracle 10" leave in potion she recommended is awesome for my fine hair. Lush is located in the Harbor Mall, towards the back of the building. This is nice because coming…read moreand going is discreet, and there isn't much foot traffic to disrupt your relaxing services. Laurie Lei, the owner, holds certification in an array of services [electrolysis; waxing; facials; massage; eyelash extensions; lash & brow treatments; permanent & semi-permanent makeup; hair, including treatments, styling, cut & color], which you can view on her newly published website: lushsalonkauai.com. For the more permanent services such as electrolysis and semi/permanent make-up, a consultation is recommended. I do everything pretty last minute, and I decided on a whim that it would benefit the busy nature of my life to look into semi-permanent make-up and make my daily routine easier. Living on Kauai is amazing -- and regardless of what I'm doing, I always want to look my best. Laurie Lei was easy to book with (completely online through her website at a time that was convenient for me). The day before, I received an email reminding me of my appointment the following day. The morning of, I also received a courtesy text message confirming the appointment I had later that afternoon. Finding her location was quite simple. I was impressed with the decor and the cleanliness of her facility. When I sat down for my consultation, we had a chance to give each other some background about ourselves and I was impressed with her formal training in her line of work. Laurie Lei expressed how imperative continuing education is, regardless of time spent in the profession. That alone, speaks volumes as to the kind of service I knew I would be receiving from her. As the consultation continued, she was careful to explain in detail what the entire process entailed, what measurements and markings she was making, and that I would be able to give input to the process before we began the semi-permanent makeup process. Her advice is, less is more. Taking into consideration the way that we age, how harsh lines and colors will wear and fade over the course of our lives was emphasized. I hadn't even though of that! After our consultation was done, she asked me several questions related to my medical background so safety precautions, if any, could be taken before agreeing to my semi-permanent makeup session. Being in the medical field, this did not phase me, but I could see how some people would wonder why any of that pertains to a beauty service. Asking these questions are so important so that the client can be advised the risks and benefits for receiving the service. Certain medications can cause bleeding or thinning of skin; medical conditions or previous infection could cause prolonged healing, which could adversely affect the result of your beauty service, so please consider all of these when inquiring. And most importantly, please answer honestly!

Being part pirate & part mermaid can be quite exciting... However hair maintenance with all the…read moresalt, sand & sun adventures isn't exactly fun; I mean would you rather spend time enjoying the beautiful outdoors or tackling dreadlocks? Being extremely low maintenance in general; I would choose adventures every day.. I just want to wash, brush & GO! I've been going to the same stylist on O'ahu for over a decade, so of course I was nervous to embark on a new relationship here on Kaua'i. Apparently, when it comes to my hurrr, I have high standards. Go figure! ‍ So I Google-stalked Boston Hair Design & called them to discuss this new adventure. Annmarie took my call & appeased my concerns. She booked me with her hubby Rick, the lead stylist at the salon. Rick is awwwwweeeessssooommmmmeee...! I mean we chatted like old friends immediately & the conversation just went happily for the entire time it took for him to take on the 90% pirate / 10% mermaid locks. I'll admit... I went a year & a half without a trim. It was dangerous territory for his first attempt. He listened to my needs & cut my hair to accommodate my lack of desire to maintain (yes even brush at times) or style. And I was stoked when he was all done!!! A lot of stylists will try to make your hair what they want to see or attempt to solicit a ton of expensive products. Having done dealt with this cray mane for over 30 years, I know what I want & what products work for me. Lots of trial & error! And Rick was down with that. Looks like I discovered my stylist for at least the next decade. And a couple of friends down at Boston Salon. Yeeee; that's a win for me, now to hit those sails! For review purposes; my hair is weathered like a surfer. I'm Caucasian, but my hair has taken on a similar texture to Latina ladies: thiiiicccckkkk & full to the max. I haven't dyed it in over 15 years & use organic shampoo & conditioner & a wet / dry brush. It's dry even if I go days without washing it. And again, I'm a brush & go kind of gal so no products after the shower, except for maybe some coconut oil...

I had an appt for a wash…read moreand style so I came in & perused some photos on my phone so I could show Rick, my hairstylist/owner. My cousin was first so we sat for a bit until Rick arrived as we came in a few minutes early for our appointments. I wanted long, flowy curls that would stand up to a few hours and into the night since I knew my hair would relax with the humidity and just naturally since my hair is long and fine. By the time it was my turn, I discussed my idea with Rick, showing my photos and telling him my hair doesn't hold a curl after awhile so I have to spray it with a lot of hairspray. He washed my hair with very warm water, then blow-dried/blow-out first to dry my hair. If the water is too hot, just communicate that. The hair dryer reminded me of my Dyson the way the air flowed and sounded. Afterwards, Rick sprayed my hair with an extreme hold hairspray prior to curling with a curling iron then sprayed again w/hairspray. I'd say only one time I felt the hot curling iron really close to my scalp. Otherwise, things went smoothly. I was probably finished within an hour. My curls were definitely sturdy. I asked Rick if he would tease the back of my hair since I like volume but he didn't want to add another dimension & mess with the curls. The curls held below the chin for the rest of the night but fell around my face and around my head. I think it was the humidity and because I have fine hair. It was a pretty style and my cousin who has really thick hair had curls that lasted all day and into the evening. My other cousin had an updo with soft face-framing curls. That was very elegant and the design of her bun in the back was intricate. Rick did a nice job working with her shorter-length hair with lots of bobby pins and creative design. The shop has a modern & spacious feel. There's a eyebrow services place adjoining the shop.
