Burnt Out Lodge - Guests cooking in kitchen at Lodge

    Burnt Out Lodge

We were very fortunate recently to spend 3 nights at Burnt Out Lodge. It is a truly unique place…read moreto relax. Your first view of the log cabin lodge reveals an unpretentious structure that is very roomy inside with a large common room that serves as a gathering/breakfast space, seeming to be, with the loft, a nice facility for groups. The Lodge is constructed of logs that remained after a fire consumed 12,000 acres including much of the ranch. The hosts Ruth and Blick shared their story about the building of the lodge which we found fascinating. Our rooms were very spacious with cathedral ceilings with outside entrances/porches. A pond lies just outside the Lodge and a stream just steps further(our fishing skills were too limited to take advantage of those opportunities). Cattle graze all around the site as part of its ranch setting in the coulee and we saw turkeys and deer along the road. Breakfasts were simple but good with large portions and very accommodating (we needed breakfast at 7 AM and it was on the table right on time each day). The long rock/dirt lane road made us wonder whether we were in the right place but signage assured us that we were. The road also encouraged us to stay in during the evenings which was fine for us and resulted in a very tranquil stay. This was our first exposure to Montana "ranch" life and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Preparing meals together was a valuable experience during the reunion. Six individual rooms like hotel rooms -- private bath, closet and area to unpack suitcases, towels, linen, roll-away beds, clock-radios, porch-space outside. High ceilings and quaint log construction. Large common area for dining and socializing. Internet by satellite -- adequate for Email and web, but you won't be streaming video. Cell phones out of range, but you can get cell service by driving 1.5 miles up the road to the ridgetop. Hiking and some fishing on the stream nearby. Large pond for a canoe or raft. Garden flowers and green lawn. Cattle on the surrounding ranch are entertainment. Near enough to Big Timber. The only shortcoming: this area recovering from a fire a few years ago; surrounding hillsides show dead twisted trees with new trees only beginning to grow -- namesake "Burnt Out" lodge. Would certainly go back again; would certainly recommend.

Anytime I had a request they were quick to respond and did whatever it took to accommodate our needs. From getting the fridge stocked with food, setting up horse rides for the crew on our day off, holding their work on the ranch so it would be quite for sound when filming, the list goes on! Not only was the hospitality incredible, but the property itself was a dream come true! After a long day of work, it was the perfect place to unwind. We would sit on the porch and watch the beautiful sunsets in the big open sky while cooking our dinner over a campfire. One night we even got to watch roping practice in their outdoor arena. They not only have horses and cows on the ranch, but 3 dogs and 3 cats who became our "office pets" (their dog Prince quickly became our favorite). A great added bonus to our stay having sweet animals come to great us each day. I would recommend the magical Cottenwood Ranch again and again. If you need a filming location, company retreat or a place to house your family reunion in Joliet, THIS IS THE PLACE!!

So they had to move their wedding a week ahead…read more The owner didn't realize they messed up until five weeks before the wedding so the bride and groom had to contact everyone they sent invites to saying the date was wrong. The venue made up for it by making it an all expense paid day. Except the rudeness of the workers there and the unethical way the run the place. They need to have the finances to fix the plumbing right when it goes out. Not just tell people they'll fix it whenever they get to it. Also I would suggest not renting their Airbnb for the bride and groom as it was disgusting. The kitchen was all torn up from a flood which made the entire house smell musty. The water didn't work at all so no showers or toilet. Another issue was their grandkids who help run the place. Very rude. The bridal party was taking pictures along the dirt road and were completely willing to get out of their way when they needed to get by on the fourwheeler. Instead the spead up and through dirt and dust at the entire bridal party. Including the brides very expensive dress. We asked them to slow down and the next time they came by they gave us little to no time to get out of the way and came within 3 feet of some of the party going at least 25mph. No remorse. All around a rude family establishment
