From the same instructors, I've seen them effectively engage children while being able to challenge older and more advanced students, often even within the same class. Having taken multiple classes of different levels with the same instructors, I can confidently say that they constantly try to teach us more and implement new methods of teaching. I've been around long enough to see the different dynamics between different mini 'generations' of students; most of which have been incredibly positive. The instructors have been able to foster a welcoming environment, and the students have done well to keep it that way.

All started off well with my two boys attending the summer week-long programs. When school was…read morearound the corner, I enrolled them in the after-school bus pick-up program. In a very short period of time, I noticed my children were begging to stop the program. After many talks with my children, I learned that a boy older than my boys was bullying my oldest son as soon as the group was left UNSUPERVISED! The instructors would go into their office where there is no line of sight to the children and sometimes even CLOSE THE DOOR!! This is when the bullying would take place. The same day I found out that my son finally stood up for himself by kicking the other boy after a chair was thrown at him, I told him I was going to speak with the instructors and he said not to at that moment because the instructors said they were going to be calling me when they had time. NO ONE EVER CALLED! And they even acknowledged by email some time later on that there was an altercation! When I tried to stop the services, they said I couldn't (I was on a month-to-month payment plan) and that we had to take other steps first. I cited the contracted that I had signed (which by the way, they don't give you a copy of, I happened to take a quick picture with my phone the day I signed it of the payment plan I was agreeing to). Finally, after much back and forth, they agreed to stop the program for my boys - BUT WOULD NOT release my DEPOSIT, which by agreement wasn't even supposed to be taken for the month-to-month option. I repeatedly asked for a copy of my contract and am still working on this so that I can get my $600 deposit back - YES $600!! I will likely be taking them to small claims court. DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE

As an over protective mom, I was looking for a martial art school to teach my two young boys self defence, respect and self discipline. From the first meeting with master Han and Mrs. Berrin, I knew I found the perfect school. My boys are enrolled in their BBP ( black belt program) and they love the academy and all the people. Master Han is extremely qualified as a 7th degree Black Belt and my boys idolize him. This place is truly exceptional having all the amenities of a large academy including after school program and the care and dedication of a family business. My eldest son has ADHD and for years he never wanted anything to do with karate, because he doesn't like to fight or hurt people. Thankfully we followed his best friend into a trial class after observing many classes. Pat Sensei is a very kind, likeable and knowledgeable teacher. His encouraging and supportive attitude affects all who come to the Dojo. My son has shown increased focus and he is self driven with a desire to master his kata. He has sustained focus, an aptitude to do better and he gets a good physical workout too. Goju ryu karate teaches how not to fight so this approach/philosophy suits my son. As the parent of an ADHD, child we look for ways to best help our children thrive in all areas of life; exercise, better sleep, focus, sustained attention, working memory, impulse control, self-esteem, respecting others, problem solving, and recognizing social cues and social skills. I am so happy that in Meibukan karate and with Pat Sensei, all of these skills are used. The many different coloured belts and ages of other students allows for students to learn alongside and from peers close to their age as well as other adults. This is all done in a super friendly, supportive and welcoming environment. Pat Sensei is driven by a love of karate and teaching and not by sales and this speaks a lot to me about the kind of place we want to be. After sitting on the sidelines and watching the many classes (usually I would drop the boys off for activities and go!), I couldn't help but enjoy the atmosphere and community. I asked my husband to come and watch with me. He too was impressed. We both found ourselves saying that we would join too. I'm shocked because I never would say that I was interested in karate whatsoever. For me, I have a foggy forgetful Mom brain and the distraction of this gentle learning felt refreshing and emptied my overly busy mind for the duration of the class. We will all progress in our own time at our own pace but I'm glad we are on this journey as a family. As close to middle age parents, we have our post covid health in mind and joining with our boys shows them that we value our health too. I highly recommend Pat Sensei and Meibukan Karate!
