This place is AWESOME! It's no frills, but it gave my group and I exactly the kind of camping experience we were looking for. What I really loved was that it was a super relaxed, rustic, laid back kind of campground. When camping, I prefer to avoid those so called "family" campgrounds with the long, ridiculous list of rules with so many glamping elements that it doesn't really feel like camping anymore.
PROS: no long list of crazy rules, pet friendly (we didn't bring pets but it was nice to see a place so accommodating to pet owners), beautiful river front sites, the river was AWESOME for tubing (park at O'keefes or pizza barn for a more reasonable 3-4 hour trip, though, we parked all the way down at ossippee lake and it took over 7 hours!!), showers, port-a-johns are surprisingly clean and were so all weekend even with a full looking campground.
CONS: Navigating the park is a little tricky - my boyfriend and I accidental drove through a few unused sites because we really just couldn't tell where the road went, the location is close enough to route 16 that there was a lot of ambient road noise and the occasional super loud 18 wheeler or motorcycle throughout the day/ night, some of their water front sites are technically waterfront but you can't see the river because its overgrown and you have to walk through a little path to get to it, the camp fire wood we bought the first night was not seasoned/was VERY wet but there's a guy across from the camp that sold more seasoned wood and the gas station down the street did too.
From making reservations by phone to checking out, we had a wonderful experience. Greg was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and he contacted me very quickly after I made a request by email. We found this place last minute and they were very accommodating. Mizzy - the campground cat and local welcoming committee- was a very adorable bonus while we were checking in and out.
Quiet hours at bearcamp river campground are 11 - 8, which is more reasonable than your typical "family" campground of 10 - 8 and they weren't so strictly enforced that you had to put the fire out and shut up as soon as the clock turned 11. People were definitely up partying and having a good time if they chose to, but were mindful and respectful of their neighbors overall and I couldn't really hear anyone else and didn't notice other people up unless I got up to use the port-a-john and passed by their camp. I would say from sundown on the noise level was very reasonable, with most noise pollution coming from the road more than any camp site.
The only major recommendation I would make to the park is maybe mark the road a little more clearly and clear out some of the overgrowth in the water front sites to make them truly water front and make accessing the river from them easier.
If you are looking for something to do outside of the river, there's plenty of hiking, a cool brewery, Conway shops, and the kankamangus all within a 20 - 1 hour drive away. I would highly recommend bearcamp river campground for anyone looking for a no frills, laid back camping trip and I would definitely come back again! read more
