Looking up from orchestra seats
Jeannette L.

My last Yelp review for the Beacon Theatre was over 10 years ago, so I'm due for an update. Last Saturday night, my husband and I went to see Mavis Staple with opening act Alison Russel at the Beacon Theater. The venue is beautiful inside, most especially the performance space. I snapped some pictures before the concert started because cameras and recording devices were prohibited during this performance. For the Mavis concert, we were in Orchestra, but really no bad seat in the house. The acoustics are really good there. Seats are comfortable. It's a great medium-sized venue for concerts. So, yeah, pretty much my opinion really hasn't changed since 2015; it's just been reconfirmed. The Beacon Theatre is a gorgeous venue and great for music lovers.

Second time coming to the Beacon and what a time was had!! I came to see Earth Wind and Fire and it was an awesome experience! Security check was quick and easy. Next time I'll leave my backpack and gym bag at home! In the lobby they have drinks for sale, band merchandise, and light snacks. We found our entrance and went to our seats. Great view of the stage. Acoustics were very good. The stage the perfect height. The show amazing. The tickets were reasonably priced.

I don't choose concerts for the venue, as my attendance at various plain concrete slabs in the summer indicates, but the Beacon has great decor including a glamorous ceiling. For last night's John Fogerty show the guitars and drums sounded great but the vocal mix was less than ideal, no idea if that's a Beacon thing. Given that some Beacon headliners could play bigger rooms, the prices can seem initially alarming but you can find bargains. I wound up in a part of the balcony that was closer to the stage than expected but was also an unlabeled semi-obstructed view. It's not crucial that Fogerty's feet may have been out of view but I couldn't see the drummer. Bathrooms are a bit claustrophobic. The workers were helpful in getting people into, and out of, the venue. Audience talking was 47% below average, meaning 88% less than Pier 17 levels.

Came to see the Goo Goo Dolls here. It is a beautiful old-fashioned theater. It's beautiful and it's clean. I wish we had been told that the view from our seats was partially blocked by the wall in front of the seats in front of us. Other than that, it was a nice experience.

Such a beautiful old venue and an awesome place for a concert.

Well, we found ourselves back at the Beacon again for the Goo Goo Dolls concert. It's a nice theater. It's clean. It has a nice old pot vibe. The staff is attentive and polite. I was very unhappy with the fact that our view of the front half of the stage was blocked from our seats because the row in front of us had a half wall in front of them separating them from the walkway. The wall was just tight enough to block our view of the beginning of the stage area. That was very disappointed.

This theater is amazing! It's huge with many levels of seatings including balcony. I saw a few shows here - Phil from Netflix's Somebody Feed Phil and also Ronny Chieng and again Ronny Chieng with Hasan Minhaj. The shows were all so great and funny. It's so beautiful inside. There are a few concession stands and merch stands too. They usually do security checks so better to get there early.

Been here before to see shows, great intimate setting, not a bad seat in the house. Only thing that I'd say is a negative is the drink prices. Kevin Bridges is funny as hell, everyone should go see him!!

Jackson Browne (8/13/25)

Gorgeous theater. I saw Jackson Browne on 8/14/25. I bought the ticket 2-3 hours before the show started. The sound and acoustics are great. The theatre is old and the seats are smaller. The show was great and Jackson Browne played for 3 whole hours. The theatre was HOT. People were asking the ushers why they turned the air off! After his 3rd encore I was wishing he'd call it a night so I could get out of here to cool off. For the record I was wearing a sleeveless top.

Back again to see Trevor Noah! The Beacon security was thorough and quick! All staff was friendly, professional and welcoming! Seats were comfortable! The bathroom was clean. And the bas were open on every level. The beer and wine was fine although they do make specialty cocktails! The venue was perfect for seeing Trevor! Hope to be back again soon!

Ask the Community - Beacon Theatre

Where to eat before a show?

There is a lovely Spanish restaurant on the upper west side, called Tasca. I highly recommend it!

Are the seats comfortable at all for people who are bigger?

They are standard, old-style, theater seats. If you weigh 250+, they will likely be a tight fit.

When I went to The Iridium over the summer, the seating was situated more for dining and the performance is more of an afterthought. At The Bitter End I was front and center facing the stage The big attraction is the history of the club. The Bitter End opened in 1961 and was a launching pad for performers who later became major stars. I started following The Curtis Family when we were all locked down in 2020. Now in 2026, the family band hit the road and one of the stops on tour was The Bitter End. As with any of these small venues, they have a two drink minimum. Once my wife & I were seated, we ordered a few cocktails and settled in. The stage was large enough to have the (7) members of the band and they had two keyboards! The sound system was great and the drinks were strong. The seating, even though I was able to be in front, it was tight seating. It was a little too close for comfort. The Bitter End is a small, intimate, old-school Greenwich Village club. If you're looking for a classic New York City music-night experience, The Bitter End fits extremely well into Greenwich Village. It's a great venue for a folk singer or a small jazz performance.

The unassuming outside hides a tremendously cool inside. As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted warmly by Dinara (sp?) who was effortlessly cool in her own right. A young lady ( whose name I didn't catch) promptly seated us. It's not a huge space, but we didn't feel cramped. There was a bar up front, tables along the side walls and a stage in the back. Apparently they have live music nights and open mic nights too. When we went there was 80s/90s music playing and it was very cool. The decor is unapologetically Black and I love it! The restroom is clean and contemporary. The service staff is amazing and attentive. They gave us cornbread with berry butter. Very tasty! My only complaint is that they could have given us each a piece instead of giving us one piece cut into 2. Lol! But it was free! And if that's the "worst" part of the experience then you know it was an overall good time! I was wavering between whether or not to get the collard greens and asked if they were sweet or bitter or spicy. Our server went and got a small sample for me to try because it was hard to describe. I was grateful for her willingness to let me try them. By the way I did order them and they are more savory than any of the above. It's a gentle savory flavor. I also got rice and beans and teriyaki salmon. The beans weren't exactly what I expected. They were black beans which I don't typically associate with soul food. They weren't bad although next time I think I'll get potatoes. My dining companion got lamb chops and collard greens and mac and cheese. She loved everything and at it right up! The food presentation, flavor, and portion size were all good. I didn't leave feeling overstuffed but I was satisfied. The servers checked in on us an appropriate amount of times (we didn't feel rushed or under surveillance but they made sure we had what we needed). The manager/owner stopped by to make sure everything was good and chatted with us. All around good vibes & good eats--I would go again. Highly recommend!

Thank you, Valerie Simpson, and your late husband; Nickolas Ashford, for creating this amazing venue. The guest host for the evening was the incredibly talented Olutayo. Olutayo is joy exemplified. His vocal range, dance moves, entertaining facial expressions...infectious. I fell in love with this man and did not hesitate to tell him so. Beyond his talents was Olu's ability to manage / juggle the night's open-mic entertainers with such grace. From the lyrics of En Vogue and Salt-N-Peppa: "Whatta Man, Whatta Man, What a Mighty Good Man!" All of the entertainers were incredible. What a range of singers, dancers, a poet, a violinist. And the band! The band! The band! Come on!! Outstanding. I was seated next to Darius, one of the several background vocalists that were positioned throughout the lounge. We became fast friends in this space filled with exuberance. Darius was a delight. He was also a big brother to me, making sure no one blocked my view of the performance. Thank you, Darius, that was so kind of you. I had such a wonderful time being in the company of all these amazingly talented people. It was a 6-hour dopamine rush that should not be missed. The dinner that was served was top-notch. I had the Sea Bass. My friend had the Golden Fried Chicken. Both meals were delicious. I had the ginger mocktail with rosemary and blueberries - so yummy I had two. Dessert was key lime pie - suffer we will. Our server; Vickie, was a delight and amazing to observe as she maneuvered around the performers and kept us and everyone around us well served and continually hydrated. Vickie is to be commended for how hard she worked throughout the evening. I made sure our tip reflected our appreciation of her. Put the Sugar Bar on your bucket list when visiting NYC. You'll leave there feeling you have experienced Heaven on Earth.

His music was the soundtrack of my childhood & my introduction to jazz & the blues. So, while planning my return to NYC, I made sure to find a jazz club where I could experience his legacy. That led me to Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center for A Masterful Tribute to Trane: Roxy Coss Quartet. I'll admit, I hesitated at the $60 cover & $20 minimum. Yet my server, Nidia, was amazingly engaging, & the seamless hospitality throughout, led by GM Raymond, was impressive. Most importantly, the extraordinary music made it worth every penny. The John Coltrane Centennial Celebration was nothing short of transcendent. Honoring Coltrane's iconic "Classic Quartet" era, saxophonist Roxy Coss led a powerhouse ensemble featuring Geoffrey Keezer on piano, James Cammack on bass, & Rudy Royston on drums. Together, they balanced fierce modal intensity with profound spiritual depth. Keezer's captivating commentary connected the music to Coltrane's history & legacy, while the musicians brought that history vividly to life. I especially appreciated the reflection on Coltrane's composition Alabama, written in response to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Artist Insights *Roxy Coss; Saxophones & Clarinet: Commanded the front line with muscular tenor solos & soaring soprano lines that captured Coltrane's questing spirit without merely imitating him. *Geoffrey Keezer; Piano: Followed his historical introductions with thunderous block chords & explosive modal runs. *James Cammack; Bass: The Ahmad Jamal Trio veteran anchored the ensemble with a deep, resonant pulse & commanding presence. & a gentle note: JC performs with a walker, yet his passion for playing remains unmistakably powerful. I love seeing that kind of dedication to the music. *Rudy Royston; Drums: Fueled the quartet with polyrhythmic fury & an exhilarating, Elvin Jones-inspired drive. The intimate space & ambience were supremely curated - pun intended: A Love Supreme. Great Jazz at the Lincoln Center & a salute to Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis for helping sustain this extraordinary jazz tradition. A triumphant & unforgettable homage to jazz royalty - TRANE, encore. I plan on visiting Dizzy's every time I return to NYC.
