We've stayed here many years and loved the beach access - very close and plenty of room to set up. Staff super friendly and condos are always very nice. However Sugar Dunes who is directly in front of the Villas is no longer able to share their beach due to new ordinances (?) passed by the county. That coupled with the recent housing development to the west of the Sugar Dunes has essentially eliminated what was once a spacious beach. Now one has to shuttle to the public accesses available 1/2 mile to the east or west of the Villas. (hassle). We thought we'd try our luck on the beach in front of the new housing but the property owner is a real beach nazi and strictly enforces (and at times beyond) what he believes is his property line. He has buried boundary pins that he located with his metal detector to have us scoot over 6 feet. Ridiculous. According to the local sherif, Walton County passed a law that extends his property line to the high tide water mark or wet sand. So you're trespassing in the morning but come afternoon you're not if tide comes to your spot. As the property owner repeatedly called sherif, people commonly shifted chairs a few feet towards the water to maintain "legality" with the law. He was so petty and somewhat pathetic, with his extreme enforcement. It created lots of angst and needless drama with all the visitors, my family included. I give the one star because The Villas has lost its charm as a result of losing this access. It's our last stay, unfortunately. It would be nice to see community overturn the Walton County ordinance that permitted this. There should be a 20' foot easement along the water's edge for the public, in my opinion. Most of these visitors are families with children - what's so objectionable? Now there are signs everywhere "no trespassing" or "walk along the water's edge." So sad to see big money prevail for what should belong to all of us. read more
