I have been here twice, once after City2Surf and more recently on a Sunday afternoon for drinks. City2Surf was a clusterf**k and was packed. I went up to the bar to order drinks and tried to pay with my credit card, and the unfriendly lady bartender said "cash only" and scoffed at me. Same went with food, so my friend and I ended up popping out for a pizza across the road. My second visit was much better as it was a lazy but nice Sunday afternoon. Staff was a bit more friendly. By 4PM though, they had run out of salt and pepper calamari so we settled for hot chips, which were nice. It came with sour cream and a little bit of sweet chili sauce. Overall a decent place, but nothing special. It's a bit like Coogee Bay Hotel where its just a big place where drunk people go. read more

The only thing good about the beach road hotel is the 'just add water instant pepper gravy' served on the side of a steak that was ordered "well done" but came out still red. Add to the fact that we ordered a regular salad and got a whole new invention called the onion salad, but I digress. After selecting this eatery based on the fact our accomodation had advertised a $10 special on steak in conjunction with the beach road hotel we placed our order and went to pay when the cashier told us "just a sec I'll get the manager to put this though. We were then rudely interrogated by manager "seb" as we explained the promotion. His continuous and rude repeating of the phrase "what's that?" In his droll unacommadating tone to our answer of where we staying. We are talking about our accomodation seb ... you know the one that advertises the promotion... not an octopus. When the waitress came to collect the plates you would think she would ask how the food is, no? You would be wrong in assuming this. A grunt resembling "you done?" Was all she could muster. Well, maybe I shouldn't let first impressions count too much, though with the amount I time that I have, and also my love of exploring new places, I really only have time to visit most places once. When I first visited this pub it looked pretty tacky, and rather dull, however when I returned to Sydney and decided to visit the pubs down in Bondi again (and I usually look around a bit more than I used to), I discovered that this place was much better than I originally experienced. As it turned out not only was there quite a lot going on here, but they have a pretty cool beer garden out the back. In fact it was the beer garden (and the band) that made me want to stay. Okay, it is a decent walk from the beach, but still quite worth it. read more

The local. Bondi's hub of debauchery, live music, where to go to fast track your night into the city, it's a haven for pre-drinks, sexy locals, foreign strangers, a place where you go with sand in your undies and thongs on your feet. Unpretentious, busy, and out spoken for a trendy mix of people, simple but tasty meals, and big screen TV's. The many different bars in this establishment have their own little vibe, my favourite parts are the outdoor beer garden, and the inside (outside) area near the pokies. The front bar is more of a sporty, pool playing area, with the biggest bar area. Towards the back is the main restaurant area, and the outdoor beer garden, my favourite. Upstairs is the live music venue, and smoking room, it's dark and the perfect place to escape with that person you just met. Upstairs on the right is another outdoor area, really trendy and a great place to go for a nice conversation over a few drinks. Only bad thing is that they close around midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, as they're in a heavy residential area - unfortunate, but head down to Bondi Hotel to continue the 'big venue' feel, or to Ravesis 'Small bar' vibe. Ladies, if you want an ego boost hang out at the Beach Rd Hotel! There are always loads of guys looking to pull or just checking out women (in a non-threatening way). Don't worry though guys, this is no sausage fest - The Beachie is just a place people go to have fun in one of the many ways they have on offer and there are plenty of hot chicks there lapping up the attention too. I was lucky enough to bag one of the massive armchairs with pull-out esky footrests for a recent RWC match and I will never be able to watch sports from a bar stool again! This is actually my favourite place to watch games because it's not a sports bar as such but has Big screen TVs everywhere, even unobtrusively out in the beer garden so you can keep an eye on the scores while you socialise. The beer garden is also the smoking section & it gets pretty noisy & stinky out there- it's quite a nice setup but gets far too packed a lot of the time. The bistro serves decent food though and they have a massive dining area now and great pizza. But my favourite thing about the Beach Rd is that they still have FREE live music on most nights of the week, and they always book really good original bands - no Billy Joel covers here! Usually Australian Indie or Hip-Hop. They're very strict on clearing the pub at closing though so be warned, when you get your last drinks call you'd better start skulling! read more

Ahh, the old Beach Road. You either love it you hate it. Sometimes both simultaneously. While it can definitely get a bit eugh (yes, they have a Miss Bondi competition... Seriously? We're still doing that?), it does have its positives. Like an excellent location close to the beach for post-swim beers and an open, breezy feel that'll make you glad you're in such a beautiful part of the world. But linger until the sun goes down and things can get a bit messy. The fact that it doubles as accommodation means there's always a high quota of backpackers and sometimes the clientele can get a bit sleazy. That said, there's a great live music venue upstairs that gets some decent acts. (Think The Holidays, Wolf and Cub, and The Aston Shuffle.) If you're hungry, the bistro menu does the usuals like pizza, steak, pasta, beer-battered fish and fries. They also do a $10 pizza and Peroni deal upstairs on Thursday nights. All in all, it's a great spot for a few lazy Sunday afternoon drinks in summer. read more

The Beach Road is like a tiny representative microcosm of Australia - a proverbial melting pot frothing with markedly different sub-groups all existing in perfect sub-harmony. Except when there's a fight and they're not. Here's who (what?) you can expect to find there: - Sloploads of backpackers (sunburnt nose = Scandinavian, mosquito bites on the legs = British) - Clusters of UFC wannabes in hoodies with the hood pulled up and wearing sunglasses inside. (Maybe they're cold. And have a stigmatism. And are playing poker later.) - Leggy, tanny, dancey girls in denim shorts so miniscule you can almost see their uterus. - Lairy louty beer-slapped locals, of the older and slightly saltier variety. - Confused imports from the northern suburbs in boat shoes who got lost on the way to Ravesis. - A few messy teenagers still learning how to handle their cider. - Listless perma-scowled Bondi hipsters (Bipsters) in W-neck shirts. Bondi is one of those beaches that is in desperate need of a bar scene makeover. Quickly. Beach Road seems to be the "go-to venue" for everyone who's aware of this and hasn't found anywhere better than the road to roll onto. Which frankly, is fine by me, as this place sure does pack a rockin party! Located off the main drag, which means far less tourists and heaps more locals and backpackers, it's a MASSIVE retreat of three floors and a huge beer garden. Regardless of which day or night you go, it's always thriving, especially on weekends when they have DJs and on Wednesdays and Thursdays when they have FREE FBI sponsored gigs. I've seen some of my favourite acts here FO FREE and it's always been a great time. Perfect for an arvo beverage or a late night danceathon, Beach Road is by far the best hotel in Bondi! read more

Affordable lodging comes with the price of extremely loud nightclubs with outdoor smoking areas directly below hotel windows until about 1am, even on a weekday. Small, dated rooms. Bed was comfortable. Staff was nice. Window A/C unit brought in cigarette smoke all night from below. Area construction began at 7am. The breakfast club on Sundays does not exist. It is a lie. The kitchen is always closed, happened twice now. But there are drinks. It's a disappointment. Do yourself a favour and have breakfast elsewhere. The standard of this place has dropped. The food used to be great, I used to love the chicken parmas, now they are just average. Being a Northern Beaches girl, it takes a fair bit to get me across the bridge - especially the whole way into Bondi. Enemy territory! However, I've made the trek across to The Beach Road Hotel on several occasions, and would definitely do so again. It's not that I go for the crowd; On Wednesday nights - the only night I've been - it's an even split between older men leering at you downstairs and trendy types upstairs. It's not that I go for the prices - just the same as any comparable venue, or the drinks or the food. The couple of times I've been to Beach Road was for bands - it was there that I saw Cold War Kids, Cloud Control, Van She, Jinja Safari and other slightly well-known (well is probably taking it too far) bands - for free! Upstairs is ideal for a gig - there's a bar in the middle, and the stage is sufficiently raised to see the band, but not so much you feel you're at a theatre. But you have to go for the music - it dominates the room, and is loud enough to exclude any possibility of a conversation. The bands are usually still at the stage of their career to be grateful for an audience to show up, and so put in an effort for you. The lighting is usually pretty low-tech, as is the sound, but that's kind of refreshing in the face of lights and music shows at the Superdome or Horden. Is it just me or has this place turned totally feral? I'm talking wall to wall bogans with far too much facial hair than can be comfortable, and garments so shredded their wearers look like they've just been fed through a wheat harvester. Or is this the new Bondi to cool for school? And I'm just getting old? Surely not. Nope, the Beach has gone to the dogs in my book. Come here on a busy night and spend half of it waiting for a drink. A local haunt for me in my teens "hello Regis'"... and a regular el cheapo dining spot for me and my then flatmate... hello $10 'No Names' chicken parmigiana with free lettuce, free bread AND free cordial. Not any more my friends. Like I said, gone to the dogs. That's because a new breed of cool has descended on Bondi's shores - aka the small bar. The hairy shredded types clearly haven't yet cottoned on to the new wave of drinking hole that's rolled into town. And lets hope it stays that way.
