I have had trouble getting the correct Rx from my previous two optometrists, but Dr. Holden was able to quickly identify the problem and get me the right Rx for near-sighted and computer lenses. The quality of the exam and the selection of the frames are the best I have found in the MKE area. My only reservation to recommend Be Spectacled is how difficult they make it to select lenses once you have picked out some frames. An associate literally read aloud my options off their computer monitor, without clarifying the costs or features. When I selected the basic lenses, they said I didn't want those (then why even offer them?). I never really understood what I was getting or paying. I didn't even see an itemized receipt until I picked up my glasses ($275 for lenses, oof). It all felt rushed, opaque and like I was getting up-sold at a car dealership. If they would be more clear and transparent about lense options and costs (maybe put it all on a flyer you can hand to the customer), this place would be an easy five-star review. read more

Three years ago, I had my first appointment with Be Spectacled to get my eyes checked At the time, my eye exam was scheduled with Dr. (of Optometry/Optometrist) Susan Diederich. Then and now, having seen her for another exam two weeks ago, I can say, unequivocally, that the exam OD Diederich performs is the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art eye exam I have every had over many years and many exams, including those exams by Ophthalmologists. Dr. Diederich is so very professional, patient, thorough, tenacious and very nice. I really think she is great! On this last visit, I happen to mention to her that my Driver License erroneously lists a requirement for me to wear corrective lenses. She immediately offered to initiate the composition of a WI State form (Certificate of Vision Examination) and promised she would mail it to me when she completed it. Sure enough, less than a week later, I received the certification letter in the mail. I have yet to shop for or ask about purchasing new eyeglasses here, though they have an array of frames to choose from and an optician on the floor to help patients. My five star rating is for the my exam experiences here as well as my experience with the business and the new shop (next door to Yo Mama yogurt) which is now down the street from their old digs. read more

I love this area of Tosa, and when I decided to finally trash my twisted old bent up frames for some nice, face fitting new ones - I knew right away I wanted to check this place out. I walked in without an appointment to just look at the frames and get a feel for the place. The same company that designed the restaurant "Swig" in the third ward, designed this place. Retro decor and upscale lighting made this place gorgeous. There are two main walls of frames, more or less laid out by brand. They are mostly local and solid brands. This place is a buy-off-the-wall place, so what you see is what you get - no ordering different frames in different colors. While that was different for me to get used to, the options were still plentiful. Right when I walked in a nice saleswoman came over to ask what I was looking for. I explained and she immediately went milling about grabbing different frames for me to try on, and tweaking her selections based on my preference and fit. We narrowed it down to two frames. I made an appointment to come back in a couple weeks for an exam. I came in and was checked in without hitch. There were a couple others looking at frames and talking with staff, so I sat at the "bar" and worked on deciding on a pair. Dr. Veth came out and brought me back to his exam room. He was very friendly and talkative, while still getting the job done. My insurance ran through smoothly, and the ordering process was quick. My new specs should be in in about 2 weeks, and I cannot wait to go pick them up. read more

I really enjoyed picking out frames here. I had been looking around for a while and found most of the lines I was interested in here so I could compare. One expensive frame found elsewhere was 20% less here. They helped me find perfect frames and the lab did a great job on my progressive lenses. I got my Rx elsewhere so cannot comment on exams. Back in the first grade I wanted to get glasses like my brother because I thought they made people look more distinguished. Fast forward 20-some years later and I have finally found an eye doctor that I like going to. After having a negative experience at a different Milwaukee eye doctor, I checked out Be Spectacled on a recommendation from a co-worker. Dr. Mark went to the same institution I work for and I learned quickly that he takes the time to hear out his patience. Rather than quickly diagnosing, he suggests a couple different options to help out your situation. The staff here are also the greatest. I went in here with my partner (she had her eye appointment several weeks prior) who wanted to see if an old pair of glasses could be repaired. Keeping in mind, that she didn't buy them there, the staff took the time to look up the piece that she needed and suggested she buy it. There was no upselling or suggesting a new pair immediately. This review is for the eye doctor (she's VERY nice) - 5 stars and the assistance with shopping with glasses (1 star). I went here last year for an eye exam and was really set on making Be Spectacled my go-to optometrist. This year, we had a benefit change and I really needed an exam that they couldn't schedule, so I went elsewhere, got a prescription, and then went back to Be Spectacled to buy a pair of glasses because I really liked them last year. My husband and I walked in about 10:30 on a Saturday morning and all of the associates were helping people. We walked around and looked at frames so that I had an idea of what I liked when it was our turn to be helped. After about 20-25 minutes of shopping, a woman with short blonde hair finished up with her customer and then started helping a young single gentleman who had come in after us, never acknowledging us. Not one person said hi to us the entire time we were there. Not one person said, "We'll be with you soon." We waited about five more minutes in hopes that someone else would help us, or acknowledge our presence, and nobody did, so we left. There were two of us scanning frames on either wall, it just seemed pretty coincidental that neither of us were acknowledged in the entire time. Unfortunately, I won't be going back here even if the doctor is nice. read more

My wife and I had old glasses with outdated prescriptions. For years, we meant to get them updated. Finally we decided to take the plunge and we're so glad we went to Be Spectacled. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive without making us feel like we were being rushed. The selection of frames they have made it tough to make a decision since there so many great options, but considering other locations I've been to where you just pick the lesser of he evils presented, we were thrilled. My husband and I wandered into Be Spectacled on the recommendation of a friend. Even though we live on the East Side, we are more than willing to book it to Wauwatosa for their selection of frames and the sheer coolness of Dr Mark. Yes, coolness. As another reviewer notes, Mark Veth is the eye doctor at, and owner of, Be Spectacled, and he is by far the best optometrist I've seen. My husband also really likes him, which is a bonus (he's usually pretty apathetic about such things). The staff is also very nice and efficient. They have a great selection of frames, and the interior design work of the establishment is really gorgeous and actually complements the frames and Dr Mark himself. There's a piano, too! The exam itself is very easy and stress-free. I tend to be extremely awkward in situations like that, and Dr Mark is really good at navigating around it. Check this place out, seriously. I went to this store because it's well reviewed on yelp, but totally disappointed at last. They were extremely unprofessional and did not really care about customers. When I picked up the new glasses, I cannot see clearly at all, I told the receptionist at the front desk, she insisted this is caused by new prescription, and let me go back and get used to it. After several days, I still didn't feel right, so went back to them. This time Dr. Veth said this was a wrong prescription because of a typo when he input data into computer. And when I received the EOB from insurance company, I realized that they charged me more than the bill from insurance. I went back again. This time there was another arrogant receptionist at the front desk. I told her they made mistakes on my prescription and the bill but she was just dismissive and raising her eyebrows. When I was talking to her, she was looking at her screen at all time, did not look at me at all. Very impolite woman. This was their attitude to their mistakes. I was speechless, I just let it go. I did not ask return and got new glasses anyway. But I will never go back because of their attitude. Dr. Veth is a great eye doctor - easy to talk to, thorough, and always addressed any of my concerns. The front desk staff is also super cheerful, and when I had to buy glasses, they were a huge help and actually tried to give me advice based on my face shape and didn't just leave me to try on all the frames by myself. My only (slight) complaint is that within the three visits I've had over the last few years, they always seem to be running behind! Wait time is usually 15-30 minutes after the scheduled appointment time. I wish they would improve that, but overall a great establishment with a convenient location! read more

My experience at Be Spectacled was perfection. In walking past I had always assumed it was just high-end fashion glasses. In fact they are a quite reasonable eyeglass shop with optometrists on site. From the moment I walked in, it was it was a pleasing atmosphere; the store was layed out nicely, the staff were wonderful to work with, the selection of frames was large and the music they played was wonderful. Dr. Veth was both very professional and personable. He really took the time to get my prescription right, while answering all my naive questions and remaining genuinely cordial. When you first walk in, there are frames everywhere. They've got one of the largest selections around. In addition, the frames are all for the most part very stylish and contemporary, mostly in a medium-to-upper-level price range. You are encouraged to spend as much time browsing as you want, try on as many frames as you want, etc. The frames are hanging out in the open, so you can just help yourself. No one pesters you, but if you want assistance, just ask. The atmosphere is very laid back and positive. The frame selection is outstanding. Service is outstanding. Dr. Veth gave my 11 year old daughter an eye exam, and we told him about her ongoing issues with daily headaches that she has had for years. He was familiar with a condition of over-focusing that I hadn't heard of (after seeing a few medical practitioners for this issue, and doing a lot of personal research.) He suggested we try bifocals for her, and by golly, the majority of her headaches vanished!! After years of struggling with this, we are SO grateful to Dr. Veth for helping my daughter so she doesn't have to live with daily pain.
