After spending several days at a rejuvenating yoga retreat, the last thing my friend and I wanted was a heavy meal. Meat wasn't even on our radar--we were craving something fresh, nourishing, and full of flavor. After checking into our hotel, we headed out on a walk to explore Victoria. Well...our "little stroll" turned into quite the adventure and ended with us catching a ferry taxi back. And here I thought Las Vegas was the city of walking! Still in search of the perfect healthy dinner, we asked the front desk for a recommendation. Without hesitation, she suggested Be Love, mentioning its incredible vegan menu and abundance of gluten-free-friendly options. It sounded exactly like what we were looking for. From the moment we walked in, we loved the atmosphere. The restaurant was bright, clean, welcoming, and had a fun, upbeat energy that made us feel right at home. We started with a couple of refreshing drinks and shared the mezze platter, which was the perfect way to ease into the meal with a variety of fresh, vibrant flavors. Then came the stacked tacos...and apparently our hunger had reached DEFCON 1 because I completely forgot to take a picture before we devoured them! If you've ever looked at your empty plate and thought, "Oops...I guess that was photo-worthy," you'll understand. Fortunately, I remembered dessert. We took home the chocolate caramel brownies and a protein cookie to enjoy later. The protein cookie was good, but those chocolate caramel brownies absolutely stole the show. Rich, decadent, perfectly balanced, and dangerously delicious--I would happily make a return trip just for those alone. Whether you're vegan, gluten-free, or simply someone who appreciates creative, flavorful food made with quality ingredients, Be Love is absolutely worth a visit. Really enjoyed this place! Came for lunch on the weekend with my spouse and it wasn't very busy. We got the kombucha, daily soup, curry noodles, and the burger. The curry noodles were excellent, flavorful without being too salty. I especially liked the crackers the soup came with, they were multigrain, which I usually think of as dense and too textured, but these were light and enjoyable. The bun on the burger was dry and crumbly. Not a huge deal as the patty was quite good and moist, as were the potatoes that came with it. I liked that the patty did not try to be meat. We parked our Tundra/Airstream rig at the Black Ball Ferry Line in line to Port Angeles later. Then, we strolled over to Bar Love. Recommended by a Whole Foods clerk, she said this restaurant was incredible and organic. Don't panic, it is Organic! And here we are primed to eat lunch. What a delicious and scrumptious lunch. Tempeh tacos, spicy mayonnaises slaw, cilantro yogurt, pickled red onions, candied jalapeños and pico de gallo. That's all? That's incredible! With a yum yum Kati roll include spinach roti, curry potatoes, radish cilantro & mint yogurt, roasted cauliflower, rhubarb chutney, pickled onions and arugula. Rating 4.5 Bright and high ceilings, nice decor, great food and friendly service. They make everything from scratch and it's all vegan and gluten free, including the spinach roti for the Kati roll. The roti had a nice texture and did not break or crack apart. The potato/cauliflower filling with pickled onions was nice but I was expecting a different flavour based on my Kati roll experience. It was tasty though and very filling. The side mushroom soup was ahhhhmazing! So tasty and comforting on a rainy day. The cacao smoothie was good but way too big to have with the meal so I put it in a take away cup. I ordered a piece of berry cake to go to enjoy later and it was nice....not too sweet. What a special find. Searched for a vegan restaurant and found Be Love. Visit this place for lunch or dinner - you will not be disappointed. This is a great place for vegetarians and for those who are strictly plant based, but there is plenty to chose from, and I know that those who eat meat, fish and dairy will come away satisfied as well. The service was simple, as is the ambiance, and it was exactly what we were looking for. I give this the highest of recommendations, and wish that this place was in our town! Wonderful combination of flavours in the tacos, smoked tempeh with pickled onion, crunchy cabbage and grated carrots, spicy jalapeños and a cashew crème drizzle topped off with a spoonful of fresh tomato salsa and a squeeze of lime. Our server, Cody was friendly and courteous and explained the great tasting water was( filtered 3 times) tastes great. My 80 year old mom who recently had surgery on her wrists, knocked over a glass of water, not only was Cody gracious in taking care of the spill and replacing her broken glass, there was no looks of disapproval. She had the burger with side salad and I had the small karma bowl with bbq tempeh & kimchi along with pickled everything. Scrumptious. We ate it all and topped it with a berry cake. Lovely spacious ambience and wonderful service by friendly enthusiastic servers. Be Love is an amalgamation of all things organic, plant-based, and local. It is essentially heaven on earth for vegans and vegetarians alike. The aesthetic of the restaurant reflects this image: it has an impressively high ceiling, a skylight framed by wooden beams and adorned with fairy lights, and large-scale paintings depicting birds, fairies, and nature. If I ever gave up meat completely, I think I would come here more often. My friend, who is pescetarian, devoured her Superfood Granola ($12) and Purple Chi Smoothie ($10), and raved about the meal well into the night after our dinner elsewhere. For myself, I enjoyed trying something new, but my experience wasn't quite as extraordinary as hers. At the time of my visit, I was on a rather strict diet, and had to limit my intake of carbs, seeds, and nuts. Unfortunately (though understandably), most of the menu items at Be Love incorporate seeds and nuts; for example, cashews are used as the base for mayo, mascarpone, and queso. Between our server's recommendations of the Mac 'n' Cheese ($16) and the Osaka Caesar ($15.50), I opted for the latter and found out for the first time what gomasio croutons and lacinato parmesan are. The dish also contains spinach, snap peas, radish, kelp, avocado, roasted garlic sesame dressing, lemon zest, as well as a multiseed cracker on the side. The Osaka Caesar certainly is a colourful and beautifully presented dish. I do think it looks better than it tastes though as I found the croutons to be dense and the salad to be on the drier side despite the dressing. Conversely, I commend the addition of the snap peas, kelp, and avocado; had there been more of these ingredients and less of the croutons, I likely would've appreciated the salad more. Were it not for my diet, I definitely would've gravitated toward the Mac 'n' Cheese or their Benny selection instead (though the decision to choose between poached eggs or grilled tempeh for the Benny is a tough one). From trying my friend's Purple Chi Smoothie, I thought it was flat and rather difficult to taste the individual components (particularly the matcha, which my friend and I were both most excited for). Its name is also misleading as it was more of a greyish-green colour than purple. With all things considered, I would say you get a better bang for your buck with Be Love's food as their smoothies and fresh juice are all in the $9-12 range. To wrap up, I do have to praise the service here because all three of our servers were pretty phenomenal. Aside from the regular check-ins, they each took time to make some small talk with us. In the case of our last server, she even offered up a number of other vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurants in the area. I think I may try those restaurants first before giving Be Love another shot, but for what it's worth, it seems to be quite the hit amongst other reviewers. read more

Man is this place packed! We came here around 530-6pm thinking we could grab a table but it was already really busy! I ordered the green bowl and it was delicious. Honestly I don't have anything to add except if you're looking for a vegan place in Victoria, drop by here and try it for yourself! Be Love is gosh dang delicious and a true testament to the heart of Victoria. On the island, we value local, we value farm-to-table, and we LOOOOVE our plant-based living. I hadn't been here before and, after countless suggestions from friends, hearing about it left, right and centre, and a friend making us a reservation, I finally tried it out. Thank goodness we had a reservation because even at 8pm, it was POPPIN', with people waiting outside to get a table. We went into the quaint little location and got to our table. There's about 10 inches between the tables (if that), so I don't recommend coming here if you have anything overly private to talk about! Personally, I like the close proximity because it makes it feel like a community and I love chatting with people I don't know, but I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea. I hadn't tried ANY of the whites that were on their menu before so, naturally, I needed to! I got the Lock & Worth Sauv Blanc (off the Summer menu) and it was interesting, for sure. More of a zip than I was expecting, with a really tasty, not overly sweet, fruity finish. I was getting a lot of melon from it, which I love! I have a mission to try out every veggie burger I see, to find the best one on the island, so naturally I got the Mason St. Burger, which is full of green goodness and absolutely delicious. Like a lot of veggie burgers, the patty falls apart pretty easily so you have to be careful to not let it all collapse in on itself, but hey, messy eating means good eating! I got their soup as well, which was a broccoli and almond stew with the perfect consistency, mix of veggies and almond, and something I wish I got a bigger bowl of! Now, like you've probably read, the portions aren't that large but, honestly, I was happy with that. I learned to never let anything on my plate go to waste so sometimes smaller portions are exactly what I need to feel nice and satisfied, but not overly full and/or gross. Plus... there's always dessert ;) Between the three of us, we decided to split the "Cheezecake" and Summer Berry Pannacotta. I am a cheesecake FREAK, yet also extremely lactose intolerant (cue world's tiniest violin). That's why this one was absolutely perfect for me. The daily Cheezecake was mixed berry and the sweetness/richness from the berries made it absolutely amazing. Hard to eat all of, but that's why there was three of us! Okay now, I don't know the last time I had a pannacotta and it didn't sound thaaat appealing to me but boy, am I glad we got it. Light, delicious, summery as heck. I was going to ask for the recipe but I was adamantly told that I wouldn't get it from them... I feel like Plankton from Spongebob though because I want that secret formula! I wish I could give Be Love a 3 or 4 star rating, and maybe after a second or third visit I would do that, but for now it's 2 stars (meh, I've had better). Sure it's in a great location in a nice modern setting with a wonderful menu. Yes my turmeric kombucha was some of the best 'bucha I've ever had. My Bhakti Bowl was delicious and satisfying, with a really cool large cracker type seed thing, all full of nutty crunch and deliciousness. The curry at the bottom had a wonderful zingy coconut flavour that I drizzled over the fresh geens on top. There was a decent amount of rice too. Yum! Now, on to my partner's lunch: She started with a bitter coffee while waiting for our lunch in which the almond milk separated into a cloudy mess. Nevermind... she persisted and dug unto her Karma Bowl but the greens on top were barely edible. Not sure if it was bitter endive or what, but with the stalks attached and the almost inedible bitterness, she was not impressed. The meagre amount of rice and beans meant it was a sort of a meal, and the miso-ginger sauce added a touch of delicious flavour to combat the awful greens. The staff was ok, but when I asked about WiFi, the snotty comment that "I guess you'll have to actually talk to each other then" plus another comment that I won't share to respect the server's identity at work, were definitely not appreciated by us footsore vacationers who would have enjoyed being able to check our emails or Facebook messages. I totally understand a no-screen-time meal, but the little lecturing tone from the young staff was irritating and immature. A simple yes or no would have been appropriate. Maybe we'll be back in Victoria some day and will try Be Love again, but odds are good that like Dionne Warwick, we'll walk on by and visit a different vegan restaurant. Hey Be Love, if you're reading this, I realize a karma bowl type dish isn't supposed to be a fancy meal, but you need to test your food before sending it out to hungry and eager guests. Also, do some experimenting on how to prevent almond milk from "curdling" in the coffee. It's probably either the temperature difference or the acidity of the coffee. We were able to get a seat for 2 out on the sidewalk patio. We ordered a glass of wine and a pint of beer to start. Seeing that they had Cauli Wings on the menu, I knew that we HAD to have them. Unfortunately, we were disappointed in the quality of them. Having had several orders of cauli wings from eateries that offer these vegan treats, we were not happy with the quality of theirs. They were breaded and soggy. Work is needed to improve what could be a delicious treat. We also split a Summer Roll which was tasty. I never leave reviews, but this last experience was enough to get me here to leave this one. First off, I'll say this is not about the food- dinner was exceptional. This review is purely to reflect the quality of customer service my friend and I received. So my friend and I went into BeLove early-ish to dinner..around 4, and we were the only customers in the restaurant, accompanied by 4-5 staff. We were greeted with water and a menu, totally cool. Then we're promptly left for about 15 minutes to choose our drinks..kind of a long time, and the several staff didn't seem very mindful in helping us. So I had to get up and ask for someone to order our drinks. We were left for over 20 mins or so to enjoy our drinks with no check-ins. We wanted a food menu, so once again I had to get up to ask for a menu. We were the only ones there, so it didn't feel like we were being cared for that much. We ordered food, and while we were waiting, I watched the shift change where 2 of the servers had meals prepared for them, they sat down and ate their whole meal. The staff were not checking in with us, but conversing among themselves and seemed to be actively avoiding eye contact. We waited over 20 mins and we're getting hungry so once AGAIN I got up and asked if our food was on the way. The hostess' reply was the time that I ordered, in a way that I was being high maintenance. That was off putting. We finally got our meal, the food was amazing. But I gotta say, the customer service was total shit. My friend and I felt ignored, and I felt pretty dismissed by that last comment. Not cool seeing as our bill was $100+ tonight. There could have been more broth in the bowl and the broth could have had more flavor. The shredded carrots were flavored with star anise and chili. There are several hot tonic teas. I had the Wellness Tea which was a bit gritty at first due to the turmeric but it was fine after a few sips. I probably wouldn't order this tea again.
