Especially if your tastes lean to the old school "traditional" folk instruments. You can't get Dulcimers or Hammered Dulcimers at guitar center. Try getting a Bodhran (Irish Folk Drum) or a penny whistle ANYWHERE. Not to mention all the lesson books to master these Uber cool non-traditional folk instruments. They have a vast plethora of banjos. When is the last time you went to a music store and had a SELECTION of banjos to choose from. They also carry Suzuki harmonicas which are my favorite too. Their hours are 10-6 but like most "mom and pop" shops they're flexible.

Blue Eagle was a new-ish shop at the time. I'd bought a Martin D-28 in late '69 or early '70 at Durlauff's Music on the other side of town. I think they shut down? My friend worked at Durlauff's as a tech for a while and told me they were getting some in. I bought this one with my food allowance for the winter quarter. Who needs food, right? Anyway, many moons later, a corner of my most wonderful guitar got a hard shot from a coffee table. The impact put a crack in the top. I'm OK with a cracked guitar, but this crack ruined the sound. I took it to Blue Eagle, an authorized Martin repair dealer at the time. They were able to mend it and make it sound wonderful again. Lost John Hutchinson, a Bluegrass legend from around there, offered me $300 for it. Glad I didn't sell. I still have it..and still am probably not worthy of it. I was amazed and joyful when I visited Athens after nearly 5 decades and saw Blue Eagle Music still in the same location.

(Sadly have this experience very frequently where I'm from in bluegrass country.) But as soon as I walked in, I felt like I was in my pawpaw's garage, full of passion projects and home. John said, "If you can't find something... I'm sure I can't either. But holler anyway." All the pictures you'll find on Yelp are pretty much the whole store. You open the house door almost directly in front of the register, and all the merchandise is in the front and along one side. It's tiny but packed. This store has decades of stock and love in it. There are a ton of music books ranging from beginner to pro for all different styles, not just bluegrass. As John recommended, it's great to just flip through the books to see which style of writing and teaching makes the most sense to you. I picked out the cheapest open-back banjo, and John never tried to upsell me. In fact, he told me all the great things about the instrument I'd picked and walked me through the basics of the style I wanted to learn and even other ones in case I changed my mind. (Which I did lol.) This was all without me having to ask, with genuine excitement. He put so much care and attention into making sure the instrument and I were prepared. It's almost a month later, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase and experience. I will definitely be back for more supplies and recommend to anyone else looking for an instrument or supplies. I'm so grateful this is here in Columbus :)

New owners doing set up and repair work. I took my Friedman guitar in recently to have them look at…read morethe the high E saddle because I was breaking strings. I got the guitar back after a $70 set up and it's not breaking strings but it won't stay in tune (has an original factory Floyd, not the lower end model trems) and the high E sounds dull when played open. They took out a spring (not sure why) and i am just disappointed in the work. Considering taking it back, but afraid they will do more damage.

Ok, my second trip there to buy an instrument. I took with me a violin instructor of 30 plus years…read moreexperience. We were extremely impressed. We ended up purchasing a viola for my wife. The staff there was amazing, considerate and patient. We ended up with an extremely nice viola for less than what I had initially figured. They made sure it fit my wife to a Tee and everything was of good or excellent quality. The instructor I had brought with me was very impressed and said afterwards to me she had never been treated so well nor was a potential customer treated so well in all of her years teaching. Yes it was a 100 mile one trip for us from Columbus one way but worth it. Will be back again to buy a viola for myself soon.

It's a great place if you want to be condescended to…read more We were looking for a 3/4 upright bass bridge. We asked the dude about it, and his response was 'for what?' Ummm.... To hold the strings in place? Then he told us 'You know you have to cut that down, right?(what a douche bag)' We told him that we have a luthier that will cut it for us. Apparently, that just offended his soul. He points to a frame on the wall and said, 'You see that? That says I know more than anyone else in the city!' It was an Associate's degree from the University of Indiana (Juilliard for meth addicts). The rest of the experience was basically him telling us how he doubts our project is professional (although we make more money than probably 70% of musicians-- not to be arrogant, I just know how this business is), how all the great symphonies come to him, and all the local schools bands. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this guy absolutely knows what he's talking about. However, if you play anything other than stuffy classical music-- find it somewhere else or online. There are PLENTY of places that'll cut a bridge for you. I guess he's just opposed to new customers.
