The Elphin isn't the worst pub in the world, but it brings with it negative connotations for me as I had a rather unpleasant experience there soon after I first started drinking which I do not wish to dwell on, and as such will not recount here. There are also some good memories, though. The Elphin is just around the corner from my secondary school, so we went there for scoops on our grad night. Good days. I also miscalculated my leaving cert points in the Elphin when we had adjourned there upon receiving them. That was also a fun time, but was marred when the barman told us that we should drink up and leave after the next one. We asked why - we had only had three or four pints at this stage, and were by no means drunk. He replied that they had an over 21s policy, and that it was good of him to serve us the first few rounds. The whole over 21s thing didn't seem to bother him when our money was filling the till. Anyway, not the liveliest of places, but decent enough if you want a quiet pint or two of an evening.

But I have to say they have the best cup of clam chowder for F#&k sake...pardon my french but that is pretty much the only phrase I heard over and over..Service was pretty good. The pints were poured fast and Cold and I loved watching Patrick fight with the bartenders about his 20 euro that he finally found after accusing them of keeping it! I offered him an american dollar but he snarled at me. I think they were shocked the way I was dressed. My top two observations are: 1) They serve one of the creamiest Guinness I've had to date, and 2) The place is always full of locals, but quite a few tourists pop their heads in too. I'm not sure what is meant when one says one felt out of place, or that the old men were made uncomfortable by one's outfit. Really, no one here gives a rat's ass how you're dressed or where you're from. They're busy watching darts or horse racing or whatever else on the televisions. Basically, if you're there, you're there, so you're welcome to be there! The locals here keep to themselves, in the sense that they've got conversations going (as one does with one's friends), but they don't give off any sort of exclusionary vibe. The barman treated me no differently than any other person. Really, before I'd finished my first pint I had already come to feel like it was my new favourite neighbourhood bar. If only that were indeed my neighbourhood! Food can be ordered at the bar. They offer selections from the Waterside menu as well as a small selection from the El Paso menu (two neighbouring restaurants). In addition, they offer "bar snacks" from 4PM to 7PM, along the lines of chili, wings, chowder, etcetera. We arrived at about 2:30PM and so had the fish and chips (Waterside) and were really pleased with it. Chips were nice and crispy, fish was big and not too greasy. It came served with a little salad with a quite flavourful dressing, an impressively concocted tartar sauce, and the compulsory mushed peas. Come one, come all, and make yourselves at home.

However, the manager that was working there was very rude and actually told us to hurry with our food and drinks as he had another group coming at a certain time. I understand during these unusual times with Covid 19 it is difficult for most businesses. But to be told after only being in the establishment for only 45 mins that we would have to hurry not just once or twice but three times because they had another booking coming in an hour and fifteen minutes just ruined the experience for everyone at the table. The waiters were great and very cooperative in serving us drinks and taking our food order but the whole experience was brought down by the managers attitude towards us. I asked for a pint too at the end which I would have drank pretty quickly and I was told I was not allowed to have any more drink. I only drank four pints and I spent 60 euro which was part of a bill that came to the total of 194 euro between my friends and I. After spending that type of money you would think they would give you at least one more drink before you left but we were told we were not to have any more drink. I definitely will not be going back as my friend was there last week and he too was rushed while eating his food.

The Grange/Donahies/Donaghmede area is a strange one. For a place with such a large population (think mile upon mile of suburban housing estates) the locality only has one pub (two if you include the O'Tooles' clubhouse, which I won't). This doesn't leave the people with a huge amount of options as to where to go for a pint. Apparently, many decide not to go at all at all, as not that many people drink in the D Inn. And if you've ever been in this pub, you might understand why. Exclusively locals, a lot of them rough, all of them men. It wasn't too bad during the day when I went there, but there's frequently trouble at night. The staff are all ignorant assholes who talk to each other and maybe one of the lads at the bar while ignoring your frequent attempts to get their attention. Aslan played there a couple of years ago.
