We promised our daughter Indian Food so we decided to order from Bay Leaf since we have eaten at the Eden Prairie location and the food was great. So we went ahead and ordered take out that consisted of Chili Chicken, Palak Paneer, and Paneer Tikka Masala. We also ordered some Naan on the side and a couple Samosas. The food was ready exactly when they said it would be. We took the food home and found that each dish was very flavorful. We make Indian food at home, but each dish we ordered was better than anything we have been able to make. So overall the food was very good and the service was great. I'm so in the air with this review and I will be going back to try it again. We went on Mother's Day because this pregnant Mama loves her some butter chicken. I have never seen this establishment sooooo busy! We came here before it changed owners and never was it close to this busy. The buffet line moved at a snails pace which was unfortunate with 3 kids tagging behind me. They were not patient because they are little. With the amount of customers the Buffet was not as great as it would have been on a normal day and we found they had a lot of special dishes that you wouldn't normally see on the regular buffet. The original buffet has the more common Indian fair and a lot of this was not known to any of us....but they had butter chicken!!! We tried to get a plate full knowing that we probably wouldn't be able to go up again, but it was hard as it was pretty picked over. Kids of course loved the desserts but they were scarce and when I asked the manager they were already out of a lot of them. The food we did get was ok, the biryani was good, but not that great. The Naan was good and the buttered chicken was awesome. I was hoping for somosas as they seem to always be on Indian buffets but no such luck. I wouldn't recommend going here on a busy holiday. We are excited to try it on a normal day and get a taste of the food we weren't able to this round. Hands down the best place to get Indian food in the area. I cannot get over how good the quality of the food is every time, me and my boyfriend are regulars and have tried nearly every other place in the area, there is no competition. Their chicken is always tender and juicy, same with their lamb, their naan is always hot and fresh, the sauces are spiced perfectly and never fail to impress, we haven't had a single thing we didn't like, but our favorite is the chicken tikka masala. To start off I really enjoy the food at this restaurant. The problem I have is that just like many Indian restaurants in town if you are Indian you get no customer service. They wont ask if if want something to drink, they rarely fill your water glass, they never ask if everything is ok and you have to get up and find someone if you need anything. We have not eaten at Bay Leaf for about 9 months; this restaurant has been our favorite for years. The quality of the food has really declined. We asked for our food to be mildly spicy and spent the majority of our meal spitting out cardamom seeds/cloves and drinking tons of water. The food was excessively spicy and the flavors did not infuse the lamb or chicken dinners we ordered. The tomato soup was acidic and had a dark rust appearance (ordinarily it has a light orange appearance) so, we had to add cream to our soup to remedy the flavor. The serving sizes were generous--I must say! But, when the food is not palatable, it ended up down the food disposal. New chef? New recipes? New management? Something has seriously gone wrong whatever change was made. We will not return to Bay Leaf again since this experience was such a huge disappointment! I guess we will have to drive 30 minutes (one-way) to get to Chapati down in Northfield. read more

Went here for the buffet and I was surprised with the different varietys they had there, compared to what the other Indian place had that is down the block. The veggie soup was good. I actually put some of the goat meat they had from a different entree lol. I like goat soup. They didn't have nann bread there, but they had a onion bread or cake, not sure what it was called, but it tasted good. Service was nice. Ambience was good. I went there at 11 when they opened before the crowd starts coming in. All in all..i will be coming back! read more

Wayyyyyyyyyy overpriced for what you get. The buffet ended up being 19.71 per person. And that was JUST the food. I drive rig all over the country and this was by far the most expensive buffet I have ever eaten at. And the food wasn't even that great, it was either way too spicy, or tasteless. I could have slapped someone with the naan and knocked them out with it. The pakoras were good though... the service was torpid. The gentleman next to us ended going back to the kitchen to get a pitcher of water to refill our waters. It's really sad because I was really excited to go to an Indian restaurant again as it had been almost two months since the last. NO BUFFET!! I went to the restaurant yesterday and they showed me to a table and put a menu down. I thought that was weird and then when I went up to the buffet there wasn't one. I decided to leave the restaurant and go elsewhere. I wasn't going to spend more money for less variety and quantity of food. I can understand that they didn't want to make a buffet and have no one show up because it was so cold, but I don't see any notice on their website or in their windows. They should make it perfectly clear. I often go there in bad weather when I think maybe less people will go, so I know they are getting some business. Maybe people should call ahead and check. Besides that the buffet is normally really good. I'm vegetarian and I have at least 4-5 selections and they normally have soup and chai too. It is not as cheap as some other places but worth it for a treat every week or two. read more

Last night I went to bay leaf for dinner with my family. We were seated right away around 8pm. 15 mins after we were seated, more people came in so it took them little longer to get our food. They apologized for the delay which was good. We ordered Hakka noodles,schezwan fried rice and veg Manchurian. Quantity and taste was amazing. The food was alright, fairly similar to any other Indian buffet. The service however was pretty TERRIBLE. Being that it was a buffet, all the service required was water and seating. My father and I were unattended to, not offered any water, and ignored. I went up and asked the staff for water, for which he apologised and said he'd be right there. My favorite buffet of any kind in the metro area. Wonderful selection, with standard Indian dishes for the less adventurous and an impressive array of dishes you don't often find in Indian buffets. They even had gajar ka halwa, a delicious warm dessert of carrots, nuts and ghee that's so much better than the typical desserts. Everything is very well prepared, subtly spiced, kept warm and fresh. The butter chicken was sublime, with just a little heat to make it more interesting. Nothing too spicy hot--any Minnesotan would be comfortable with the spice level--and chutneys are available if you want to heat things up. To top it off, they even included chai in the buffet! Friendly and helpful staff, and the atmosphere is pleasant and not noisy or crowded. A complete, delicious and satisfying experience. Went here with a friend a random weekday evening, hoping for a nice meal. We had an awesome experience. The server was very kind and helpful. She even helped me order exactly the dish I wanted that I could never remember what is was called (which is silly since it is Tandoori Chicken). She also made a nice suggestion for my indecisive friend. We had the Tandoori Chicken, Lamb Curry with Rice and Garlic Naan. Everything was delicious, fresh and perfect. Called to check if there is spoon somewhere in the packet...person said we don't offer unless you ask for it. I have feedback to offer it to customer and let them chose. So my friend and I are just driving around looking for something to eat that catches our fancy. I have yelp open. Never leave home without it. And we run across Bay leaf. It's in a strip mall but that means nothing. I've had great experiences behind strip mall doors. The interior is nice. We were greeted and seated quickly. We decided to order many things. The food just sound so good. It dodge not disappoint. The cone I wish we had had the patients to take a photo was so delicious, toasty with caramelized onion. Oh man. Every dish spiced to perfection. She actually believed us when we said we like it hot. It wasn't a sear the inside of your mouth hot it was balanced with the flavors to make you happy. The rice was so light and fragrant . It seemed to almost float. The service was fast and friendly. I would have liked for them to have boxed the food. It seems strange to me that any place, that the servers expect tips would toss a bunch of boxes at the customer, who don't have serving utensils, or a decent position to be scraping food. rather than making the last part of the meal just as enjoyable as the first. I digress. I loved the place. I will definitely go back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for great Indian. read more

Whenever I'm there I have to track down the server and beg for a refill. I've had to ask like 3 or 4 times sometimes and still nothing. I've been a regular workday lunch customer at the Eden Prairie location of Bay Leaf for years now, so I was very excited to see them bring the same menu closer to where a lot of my family lives in the south suburbs. From the look of it, they purchased an existing Indian restaurant lock, stock, and barrel, so while the menu is 100% Bay Leaf you'll still see the former restaurant's service-wear, decor, and (amusingly) menu holders. Since this location is so new I'm going to focus on the food for this review rather than the service and ambiance. And the food is excellent! Everything I've had at Bay Leaf has been absolutely jam-packed with flavor and perfectly cooked. The chicken 65 is punchy and at that perfect level of addicting spiciness. Their paneer is the perfect texture to both soak up delicious sauces (palak paneer and mutter paneer are my faves) and fall apart in your mouth. The chicken pieces in their butter chicken and saag are tender and flavorful. The chana masala has just the right mix of tanginess and smokiness and the chickpeas are tender without being mushy. And of course the basics like their garlic naan and basmati rice are executed with skill as well. This is by far my favorite Indian food in the twin cities. A couple tips if this is your first time here: Order family-style if you can so everyone can get a taste of everything. Get the chicken 65, I haven't seen a single person try it and not be delighted. Don't shy away from the vegetarian dishes, especially the chana masala and tarka dal, they definitely work as a full meal and not just a side dish. Make sure you get at least one order of garlic naan - I've seen some Indian places include naan with an entree, but Bay Leaf's is absolutely worth the couple of bucks to add it to your meal. Almost everything at Bay Leaf is very simple by way of ingredients and preparation, but their skill at blending spices and flavors really makes it a comforting, hearty meal. Headed to the Midwest to visit family. Being from the Bay area we knew we couldn't have mexican food so we though we wild have some Indian food. Yelp did not disappoint! We had two orders of butter chicken (probably should only have ordered one as the portion sizes are generous), tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, plain naan, and a garlic naan. Everyone was happy with their choice. The chicken in the butter chicken was good. Nice slices of meat. Not fatty. The tandoori was good and the onions etc that comes with it looked fresh. The desert was so good too! Not sure if we'll be back as we don't fly into MSP very often, but if we lived nearby we would definitely come back often. Probably my favorite Indian restaurant in the Twin Cities. I feel they have more options for their lunch buffet than other restaurants I've been to. If you're ordering out, I would recommend their papdi chaat (savory appetizer made with chickpeas and onions), vegetable samosa (kind of like an Indian vegetable empanada), chicken tikka masala, and the malai kofta (potato/vegetable balls in a curry sauce).
