What was supposed to be a four day trip to Florence, South Carolina turned into a nine day ordeal…read more I had to put my parental unit in the local hospital and while family and friends came around to make sure that I was OK, I did my best to scrounge and find little things to eat that kept me close by the hospital. But baby, when she was released? We made our way to Orangeland Seafood - now let me tell you a little something about Orangeland...If you know, you know. Here you can eat the ENTIRE fish from the head to the tail and leave no crumbs left behind! This catfish was seasoned to perfection! And I was too busy feeding my face to take a picture of the tomatoes and rice and the fried okra and the corn, but I got a picture of the main attraction. The customer service was excellent! The restaurant was clean. I ordered the 3 piece whiting meal with fries and fruit punch. My sister ordered a pick your on three selection combo which included fried croaker, calamari and oysters, onion rings and fruit punch. Both meals came with hush puppies and coleslaw. The calamari was a little salty, the fruit punch was weak, the coleslaw wasn't too my liking but the hush puppies were excellent! Overall the meal was delicious. I love their motto you buy they fry it! We will be back to try additional menu items. This restaurant is highly recommended!!

We ordered at the counter and found a table. Both of us ordered the pimento cheese sandwich. I ordered fries and a side salad with ranch, she ordered the house made chips. We both thought the pimento sandwich was delicious. My fries were served hot and fresh. The salad was a disappointment. It looked and tasted like it had been poured out of a bag. The ranch dressing was as thin as water without much flavor. My coworker enjoyed the house made chips. I did appreciate the Texas mustard BBQ sauce. The dining area was comfortable and decor was interesting.

Hidden Gem Alert: Sonny's in Hartsville Will Make You Rethink Every Travel Decision…read more The Setup: Picture this - we're fleeing Charlotte airport toward Myrtle Beach, stomachs growling, playing restaurant roulette on our phones. Every exit offered the same depressing parade of 3.3-star sadness. Just when we'd resigned ourselves to gas station jerky, there it was: Sonny's Restaurant in Hartsville, gleaming like a mirage with its 4.9 rating (okay, only five reviews, but STILL). The menu screamed "drive past me!" - hot dogs, burgers, and enough fried food to make your cardiologist weep. But that rating! We took the leap. The Vibe: Walking into Sonny's feels like your cool aunts invited you to his hunting lodge/tractor museum/time capsule. High ceilings, a delightfully chaotic mix of chairs that would make an interior designer's eye twitch, stuffed pheasant keeping watch over your meal, and - my favorite touch - a majestic display of tractors. Oh, and bottled sodas with an ominous "DO NOT OPEN - EMPLOYEES ONLY" sign. (I'm still wondering what happens if you do. Instant ejection? A stern talking-to? The mystery lives rent-free in my head.) The Welcome: The greeting hit different - warm, genuine, like visiting relatives who are actually happy to see you. We rolled in late, right as they'd shut down one of the burners, but there wasn't a hint of "ugh, late customers" energy. The Food: Started with onion strings (because of course), then asked for their recommendations. My wife went French dip route; I chose the burger steak - loaded with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and gravy (I had them hold the gravy and pile everything else on top because I'm a maverick like that). Here's where it gets good: This came with a baked potato AND salad for a price so low I actually checked the bill twice. My wife's sweet potato fries? Chef's kiss. Her side salad? Crisp, cold, perfect. My salad? Same. Everything hit exactly right. The One Speed Bump: The baked potato arrived with vegetable oil spread instead of real butter. In a place this authentic, margarine feels like a betrayal. Guys, spring for the real stuff - you're so close to perfection! The Verdict: Sonny's is exactly the kind of place you discover by accident and then bore everyone about for the next year. Rural setting, genuine hospitality, solid comfort food at prices that feel like a glitch in the matrix. If you're passing through Hatsville on the Charlotte-to-Myrtle run, do yourself a favor: Stop driving. Eat here. Tell them the couple not from there and who arrived late sent you. Five stars. Would accidentally discover again.
