Overlooking the waters of Eagle Street Pier, Bavarian Bier Cafe holds one of the best views a restaurant could have in the city. While i don't feel completely qualified to review this place, as I've only tried the food and not their beers, I may as well drop a little note on their sausages. I ordered the Cheese Kransky from the Haus-Made Sausages section, which was good, but a little heavy for just one person - and a bit too much of the same flavor. The sauce on the side was delicious, and the mashed potatoes were a good addition as well. I did like the Giant Bavarian Hot Dog (a bratwurst sausage with sauerkraut, etc.) better, and the onion ring sides were delicious as well. The food is all quite heavy, but definitely is suitable for the setting. Had the veal snitzel it was good. Felt heavy after. Normally 29.5$ add sides for 2$ Ambience is casual seating and go up and order sometimes if the waiters are more free they'll come do table service. It's hard to hear so they often ask you to repeat a few times and will still get some of the orders wrong. Wide selection of beer. The mango one is pretty good. The Bavarian Bier Cafe has lately proven to be one of my favourite places to go and have a chilled evening. During those warmer days, the glass bi-fold doors open up to provide a flowing atmosphere from bar right out to the river views. You rock up, grab a beer to start off with if you want to before being sat at a table. The great thing is that if you are part of a smaller party (say 2) they sit you at a long table that you can share with another smaller table. This arrangement makes it a little bit more intimate whereas you can enjoy your surroundings with new friends. The team have a newly re-vamped menu providing more options for you to sample - as well as most of the old favourites. If you ask me, you can't go past the sample plate where you get a bit of a taste of the good stuff (schnitzel, pork belly and an assortment of sausages) as well as traditional condiments like sauerkraut, mashed potato and red cabbage. If you want something truly special, then I also recommend a pick from the selection of schnitzels. Even the basic crumbed chicken is AMAZING!!! So juicy and moist. *homer drool* HOW COULD I FORGET!!! Your first point of call as they are placing the menus in front of you is to immediately request pretzels. Oh those warm doughy pretzels are to die for!!!!!! Where was I... That's right. How could you go to a Bavarian restaurant without a beautiful ale. Beer, beer and beer are the most predominant beverages on the menu. However, non-beer-lovers need not dispair. Their wine list is almost as big as the beer list. Plus of course, the majority of spirits that are also available along with all the non-alcoholic essentials will ensure that everyone is catered for. Overall, a fantastic (bit pricy) place to go to. The only recommendation that I would make that I recently discovered is that Friday night (and probably Saturday night) are not the best times to go for a feed. The service stands up, but unfortunately, not as much effort goes into the food. Meaning, over cooked schnitzels and dry pork bellies. With all this fantastic German beer and a spectacular view of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge, how can you not like the Bavarian Bier Cafe? I try to frequent this join at least once a month and I keep wondering why I don't come more often! The happy hour deal is pretty decent: 500 ml beers at the 300 ml price (approx 7 bucks) and half-off cocktails [I've been told you need to try the chili chocolate martini]. The staff is very attentive and the bartenders are quite efficient with their pours. I find that I rarely have to wait more than 5-10 minutes before getting a drink. Oh and make sure to bring cash. They have a service charge for EFTPOS/card. My drink of choice? Try the Hofbrau Dunkel. Don't be put off by the dark color. This is one of the smoothest beers you will ever drink. Just be aware though that once you start chugging 1L steins of these things, the world could get a little spinny! read more

I hate to say it, Bavarian-Australian Fusion. We were lured in here by the aroma sausages from like 100 meters away along the river walk. We had to ask around until someone mentioned, Oh, that must be the Bavarian Bier Cafe. So when we found it and walked in, it was not remotely Bavarian looking and one thing that did not help was the trance music playing in the restaurant, but the menu had one page of Bavarian food. The other pages on the menu had Baramundi and other Australian items, which I was not interested in. Since we did not have a booking the hostess took us to one of the communal tables on the balcony with a river/bridge view. She introduced us to our server Johanna from Western Germany that was the twin of Diane Kruger! What a dream, in a Bavarian Restaurant with Bridgette von Hammersmark as our server! I first went with the Munich Lowenbrau since I missed out on a such a Munich staple with my last trip to Munchen, and right away we ordered the sausage sampler. It came out presented very chic, but all of the Sausages were legit! Especially the Nuremberger! We liked it so much we ordered a Nuremberger platter with another side of sour kraut. By now I moved onto the Furstenburg Pils, that was a classic German Pilsener, which I had with the goulash! The goulash was very German and reminded me of the goulash at the Hoffbrau Haus. Luckily Johanna asked me if I wanted another beer so I went with a 1/2 litre of HB Traditional. They also have a ladies size beer and for the 20 yo a litre size like they have in Munich. Great views on a warm night of the Brisbane river. While the service staff were a little confused by my move straight to a till to pay for my meal, I did like how I had the option to donate $2 to the homeless as part of my bill. Went here with some coworkers who wanted the view, atmosphere, and location. Good pau hana type of place but I wouldn't choose here if I just wanted to get my grub on or to try something new. Nothing wrong with the food yet nothing memorable other than the slightly high prices. This is a "safe" (j.e. not interesting) place to go if you are with a picky group and not everyone is looking for something different and adventurous. If you need a place that will not offend the palates and tummies of those who shy away from anything new, BBC will work. Places like this serve a purpose. read more

I really liked the schnitzel! I got the chicken parmigiana and it was lighter and tastier than I expected. I thought it might be heavy and greasy but instead it was just right. It was the best chicken parmigiana I've ever had - including nicer Italian restaurants where you would think they'd do it better. It had a nice tomato sauce and a generous amount of mozzarella on top. Have to be honest with this one. First off: I am married to someone who is half-German and I also know a lot of German people. I get to experience German food and culture very regularly. This place is not really authentic. The food is OK but way too salty, the beer is good but not cold enough and the schnapps is good but the atmosphere is not "authentic". We went there recently and we walked past the kitchen and there was not one German person in the kitchen!! It is also very overpriced for what you get. I would call it "German-style pub grub". Its OK but for more of an authentic German experience, go to the German Club. Maybe I am just fussy but just did not find anything to rave about it. read more

Tuesdays are daddy daughter dates with dad in the city and we decided to venture outside of good ole George St and go somewhere new! Funnily enough I've never been here! A close friend of mine is constantly here but I guess it just hasn't even happened... But it did today! Whilst it was lunch during the week, I can only imagine how popular it would get on the weekends and evenings... It seriously is in the best location possible...feels like pure bliss and serenity (when it's not super loud of course) over looking the water and Storey Bridge. It's a popular venue but there is ample seating. However I can no doubt say it would probably pack out during peak times so maybe check out whether you need a prior booking at popular times/ days. The food there is quite lovely. Relatively simple but delicious and filling. I had no chance at finishing my meal so come on an empty stomach! Obviously they have a wide range of beers (just read the name of the place) and even though I'm not a beer girl, it looked rather impressive! Dad didn't have anything bad to say about the foreign concoctions so I'm sure they'll impress :P The service was great, though Dad did have trouble understanding our waitress as she had a strong thick French accent. That being said I was fine 'interpreting' and I don't see it being an issue... just have your ears ready for those of you who don't interpret foreign accents too well ;) Also, don't take the word 'café' too literally... it's more like a restaurant & bar thrown into one with a simpler 'cafe style' menu... Alright. Dinner at the bavarian beer cafe in Brisbane. Not much is open on a Sunday night there in the CBD. (But the weather is nice for a winter day, ... ) Overall I can't give the place the thumbs up, but it isn't terrible. And if u just wanna drink German beer and have a good time, you may as well enjoy and skip the rest of this review. (Assuming that's most customers motivation) If you after decent german food you may wanna keep reading! "German beer cafe"... I wonder who came up with that name, but I doubt it was a bavarian. Cafes in Germany do serve beer, but mainly are hangouts for folks, with same minor or major weight problems, that also have 2/3 of their life behind them, stuffing themselves with torte and cakes. Cafes are not pub style restaurants and putting "beer" or "bavarian" in front of the name doesn't make it any better but rather more presumptuous. So - except for marketing purposes - I really wonder if this chain has any real german (or bavarian) heritage at all. But nevertheless, that would not be any problem at all if their food is any good. Looking at their menu I can see some bavarian items. Again only very commonly known ones, but there are also some modern Australian dishes on the menu. (oysters, salt&pepper squid,.. what every child eats for Christmas in bavaria ;) ) I went with goulash and Rösti for the main, listed as one of their specialities. What the menu didn't say - and the waiter, being french, couldn't be bothered to mention that when I ordered - the Rösti are basically are a garnish, not a side. It's like if you order a schnitzel with fries, you'd be pissed if you got a big schnitzel with 4 fries, ... . So what I got was big bowl of goulash with 2 miniature Rösti, which are basically something like pan fried hash brownies in this case. In Germany a range of potato dishes can fit that description, depending on the area you are from. In any case this would not be a typical side for a goulash. However, to compensate, I ordered two sides, which came out promptly: Blaukraut/Red cabbage and creamy potato mash, which was recommended by the waiter. So what's the ruling on the food: The mash was ok, not as smooth as it could be (particular for as per the menu "creamy" mash), but it was enjoyable. The red cabbage had a good flavour and was spiced quite right, but they managed to overcook it quite badly. It was more mashy than the potato mash and that's a big mess up. A red cabbage cooked well can be such a beautiful thing. It's also quite hard to screw up, as it takes a long time to cook. (I.e. it doesn't overcook within a few minutes, ... ) The main dish - the goulash - was again flavoured well, but wasn't really a goulash. It was listed as one of their specialities - a veal goulash. Goulash is first of all a hungarian dish (commonly done in Germany though), but then it's sort of slow cooked, melt in you mouth, dicy chunky pieces of meat in a dense tomato/gravy source (and I do apologies if I don't do the real goulash justice with this description). It is also somewhat hot. (normally includes hot paprika flavours) What I had here was tiny (for a goulash) pieces of veal, that were a bit dry, in an massive amount of source, with a bit to much cream for a goulash and not hot and any bite at all. They do have a goulash soup on the menu, but what I had there as the actual "goulash" was quite like what I expect a goulash soup would be. Desert: Black forest cake, the only desert with a "home made" remark on the menu: That was actually enjoyable, but wasn't the most typical black forest cake I'd say. Also for reference the back forest is not in bavaria, but this dish would be at least suitable for cafe style place in Germany,... so half way there ;). So overall I'd say as "food" it was ok-ish, definitely not terrible. The red cabbage was sadly not eatable, the rest was a solid ok. To be fair, they inquired how everything was and after I said "ok" they wanted to know details. I kindly explained what I thought the shortcomings were (me being German couldn't wave that off ;) ) and after that waitress spoke with the cook, they deducted the red cabbage. I still can't really excuse them much, cause red cabbage you cook in big bunches: Did any cook tried it at all? That was so obviously mash and not right. Who decided to serve that anyway, .... ? Bottom line: I may come back once to see if their red cabbage is any better at other days and I may try their custom butchered german sausages and see if those are any decent. I might update this review then. I remember trying a German beer cafe in Sydney a few years back. Me or my partner had sausages there, I think. As little as I can recall I (and that basically tells the story) it wasn't much to remember - not terrible, but not impressive either. So basically the place is worth it for the German beer, everything else is not that German, but you may enjoy it, but be cautious! read more

Treat them mean, keep them keen; that's the old adage right? I think the Bavarian Bier Café has that concept down pat. Not in the way it treats patrons; the service is always very friendly and cordial. I'm talking about the time they like to kick enthusiastic drinkers out to the kerb. Every time I go here, everyone is flushed out at 1am, which doesn't leave a happy group of people who were heretofore enjoying themselves around a table, slopping down beers, and overlooking the river. When I get slightly annoyed at this though, I always remind myself not to be too precious about it. There are after all, many riverside options within stumbling distance, so the rejection never feels too sharp. Oh but Bavarian has so many options! That's why it's so hard to pry yourself away from it. The menu is splashed with a ridiculously extensive range of beer options and even wine options for that matter - usually presented to you in glasses so tall that you might misinterpret them as a joke. The best area of Bavarian is definitely outside where you can create a bit of noise and get a little silly with only the river to hear your raucous behaviour (and maybe the people at Jade Buddha). It's also as casual or posh as you make it; a night here is fun and easy going whether you're just after a cheeky drink with friends or a fun starter venue for a bigger night. The Bavarian Bier Café is probably more of a boys venue, but I do have a penchant for places where you can get a quality beer without someone looking at your funny. I love it. I don't love the 1am kick-out, but I do love Bavarian. read more

Heading to the Eagle St Pier on a lazy Sunday is always fun. It always feels like opportunity when meandering along the river checking out the possibilities. Today was different. The choice was clear On disembarking from the Taxi, with an empty tummy and a thirst, we were immediately overwhelmed by a divine smell. It was like BBQ on roids and we literally let our noses lead us. Hungry and keen we went off track at first. Headed towards Jade Buddha the scent was lost. But we quickly re-routed and found our way up the escalator to fine a chef making all sorts of fine dining on a BBQ at the front door. We went with the chicken wings and rack of ribs. At the last minute we let out empty stomachs doing the talking and added in a burger. This was the mistake - three amazing meals. read more

The refit of a old location, yes, I remember Grand Orbit & Char Char grill. But, you paint over the white paint, put up some nice down lights, set up some will placed seating, and add beer. It makes for the best location where you can order Quarts of beer, not just pints. I ordered a Spaten München pale beer, that has a strong hops and creamy taste. They also serve shots on boards, and ring the bell. Hand delivered to your table. Good place to go and celebrate your year. read more

The Steins are good, and the Pretzels are also very good though not as good as what I've had in Bavaria. The views over the water are very nice, though despite having Steins and nice German beer it did not give me the same feeling that I had in Bavarian Beer Halls which is what I was dreaming of getting. A big shout out to the chefs and wait staff at the Bavarian Bier Cafe. I went there last night and although I had given notice that I have allergies my 'safe foods' list was lost - eek! So after some discussion with the waitstaff to explain the seriousness of my anaphylaxis, a lovely chef came out to talk me through what I could eat for the night. I ordered an entree and main and he spent at least 10 mins talking it though and having a joke with us. I'm always afraid to speak to the chef because they can be so grumpy but he took everything on board. Great service! Plus the rest of the food was amazing and came out super quick. We often come here with our two children as they cater to everyone in our family - me who is gluten intolerant, our son who is the world's fussiest eater, and our daughter who loves the "finer things in life" and thinks nothing of chowing down on pate and oysters. We will sit down happily to a Bavarian Tasting Platter - obviously with me avoiding the schnitzel - and enjoy every last morsel. It's more than enough food for the four of us even as the kids approach their tween and teenage years. I've always had great service here and it's a light and airy venue right on the river. I think there's two different ways to review Bavarian. One would be to look at this place on a Friday and Saturday night but that would be overlooking how much potential this place has on over days of the week. Boasting one of Brisbane's best views my favourite time to experience the Bavarian would be on a Sunday afternoon where you can have a late lunch that will keep you full washed down with several of Germany's finest beers whilst taking in the view. So if you've only ever come here when it's packed then I suggest checking it out at another time, you won't be disappointed! read more

A great place to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon watching life go by along the river. Do your best to get one of the outside tables although these can be full or reserved at the weekend. Here's a little secret.....call ahead and book a table even if there are only two of you and they will reserve one for you even if you do have to share if you aren't using the whole table. Best time to visit is between 4 and 6pm every day, for Happy Hour when 500ml beers are the price of 250ml (I think). The beer is great, all imported from Germany, but can be pricey outside of Happy Hour. Haven't eaten here yet but the food looks good and plentiful plates are served up. Expect standard "German" fare including schnitzel, pork knuckles, wurst etc. Only thing that lets it down is the crappy music often playing too loudly. read more

The Bavarian Beer cafe on Brisbane CBD's Eagle Street peer is much more than just a typical beer cafe. In my opinion its the perfect German experience with its great beers, great schnaps and great food. The bar has a good selection of German beers on tap and for come in proper German sized steins which puts even the pint glass to shame. The selection is vast so if you are a beer fan i would suggest trying as many as you can because it ads to the experience. For those who don't like beer they have normal drinks as well and if you are feeling a bit adventures you can try their selection of schnaps but be warned it can get you off guard. They also do schnaps shots by the meter which is a great party starter and attracts a bit of attention because the waiters bring them to a table while ringing a bell. If your a fan of schnitzels and German sausage this is also the place for you as thus far i have not come across a place that does them any better. The portions are large enough to fill even the biggest apatite's too so even if the mains can get a bit pricey its justified. This is a place where bookings are essential because it seems to be busy no matter what time of the day you go so trying to pop in a get a table would not be wise. I have been a few times and suggest it to any one trying to find something other than the usual Italian or Chinese for diner. read more

We had so much fun at this place! The meals were well prepared and my tasting plate was the envy of others at the table. Our party ordered pork belly and schnitzel, among other things - and then came the tasting plates. Two of us each ordered one of these and were delivered a long rectangular platter with a little schnitz, a bit of pork belly, a couple of brown and white german sausages, a little sauerkrat and mash and, well, it was just the perfect dish to accompany the many beers we tried. The bier cafe is great for drinks, or food and drinks, but don't go if you're looking for a sedate atmosphere; this place is loud and fun. No kids allowed, which is understandable here, as there are large quantities of beer in long glasses and steins being delivered to the tables, the wait staff happily weaving their way through the crowds... and then there's the schnapps! Yes, we progressed from the big beer menu to the little schnapps menu after dinner. There are 30-something kinds of schnapps on the menu and your order is delivered like this: the wait-person carries in a metre long, thin board holding the handle shaped end, along which, in small holes, rest the glasses of schnapps in all their glory. In the other hand, the wait-person is loudly ringing a kind of cow bell, so that anyone interested takes a look to see who's testing their livers - it was us. Found this place on yelp last night, looking for dinner; it had pretty decent ratings, so even though I wasn't really in the mood for schnitzel, we tried it. Terrible experience! The food was actually pretty decent for me, but the service- beyond terrible! (The pretzels were really good) 1st, our waiter left 1/2 through our time there. We found this out only after waiting 20 minutes to order more drinks and tracking down another server who informed us that our server went home. And then she turned out to suck every bit as much as he did. Then we found out that they would not split our bill. The menu specifically states that they will do this, with a $2 surcharge added to each bill, which we were all fine with. To finish the night, the sign posted at the entrance states: "EVERY WEDNESDAY, have a bier of your choice with any steak order". 3 people in our party ordered steaks. No free biers. Of course a place like this -- serving beer in capacious steins, meaty Germanic fare and a hiring policy reeking of eugenics -- is incredibly popular. I checked it out with a group of friends not that long after it opened and it was bustling with activity. Apparently it still goes off like a David Hasselhoff concert in Frankfurt, especially for a Sunday session. I totally approve of the bier policy here: all are 'pure biers', complying with Bavarian Purity Laws ('Reinheitsgebot'), and come in authentic imported steins. You can get them in three sizes -- 300mL, 500mL and 1L -- and as you might expect they are all pretty expensive, but arguably worth the premium price for the quality. One of my favourites was the Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier Hell, which has a light fruity taste and a grainy texture. You can get these Weissbiers mixed with various fruit juices, like mango, just be prepared to be labelled a wuss if you're drinking at the bar... As for the food, I had the 'Char-grilled Nurnburger Sausages' with sebago mash, sauerkraut, crispy onion rings and Lowenbrau bier jus. All was good, though the sauerkraut could have had more zing and the rings been a little crispier. A fellow diner's schnitzel (they come in eight varieties so don't ask me which one) was a little cold, but her request for a replacement was quickly honoured. If you hear a ringing bell here it means someone has accepted the 'Metre of Schnapps Challenge'. The Bavarian Bier Cafe is a mixed review for me. Mostly because of the combination of food/drink available. I have been here a few times - all of which were pretty good. The menu for omnivores is definitely pretty great - for a vegetarian, not so much. That's not to say the options aren't varied, they're just kinda boring - and not at all healthy. Understandably, the cuisine is themed and can't really vary all that much, but it just would be nice for places like this to offer a larger variety for different dietary requirements. Service is always quick, staff are all attractive and pleasant to deal with. The drinks are awesome - you come here for pork, and beer. Or Schnapps. It's a great place to come for a reasonable meal and a lot of expensive beer! Great if you're based in the City, Eagle St Pier is fantastic to visit at any time of day. read more

Good food and reasonable prices. Was staying in town and accommodation was close to the Bavaria. Thought we would give it a shot. Defiantly alot of things on the menu we wanted to try but work college and I went the pork knuckle. Was awesome, great taste, hard crackling, good mash, good beers, fair priced and good service. Came back again the next night I ordered the same thing and my college ordered the schnitzel. Both really happy with our meals (yes not adventuring on my but hey I like it). Defiantly recommend for anyone. Bit more upper market feel to most German places in Australia but prices are very good and great food. Found a new favourite in Brisbane when we visit. read more

Food is good and they have a decent sized menu with a nice outlook on the river. Just very very expensive. They literally charge for everything- sides, gravies/sauces , even the water they gave us when we sat down was $8! Service was poor. Also they couldn't do split bills which is tedious and I can never understand places can't do it. read more

The beer is good. But the worst Schnitzel ever. No taste. Pathetic. A McDonald's chicken sandwich is better.

I just went on exchange in Germany and it tastes like I was still there, everything is amazing to even just the coke they have, not too sweet and the staff are so friendly and clearly all very close, the pretzels are the best you can't go without having one, always have the cricket on tvs so if u like cricket I recommend hahaha and the best views read more
