We spent tens of thousands of dollars creating the backyard of our dreams and front yard with curb appeal we'd always wanted. Things went south from the minute they started. And, now I'm left with dead plants everywhere, ground lights that either don't work, fall down or look like a toddler installed them and uneven pavers surrounding the pool and firepit (which they first installed a used system and tried to pass as new) which are like a land mine of tripping hazards throughout me yard, just waiting for my 83 year old mother to trip over! We have called Christian "Chris" Basnight, we have texted and he just will not respond. Absolutely at my wits end with what we expected versus what we got. read more

I am beyond thrilled with the patio and wall seat the team did. The crew was very professional and spent a great deal of time perfecting the ground work for a very level surface. The owner was super responsive and very friendly. I plan to put in a pool at some point and I would hire these guys again to do a paver patio around the pool. They were awesome! read more

We recently got sod installed. The whole process has been less than ideal as the communication is non-existent except for collecting their payment! While I realize that they cannot control the weather, we were not advised on the extra water required on the first day. It was not in our contract nor did any employee tell us to amend the directions provided in the contract. We have called several times and each time we are given a different excuse. They still have not completed the job as the fertilization has not been done. Our sod looks meh and the weeds are starting to thrive. I would not recommend using this company. read more

In 2015 I originally gave Basnight a "1" and the reasons why are below. It's August 2017 and I've raised it to a 4. I don't know what has changed within the company but they're better then they were before. No more huge clippings left behind, they take extra care around ornaments, I do see a supervisor come around. Landscaping looks great. Happy with their work. ************************************** Giving a 1 star because of several reasons. While they seem to work better with individual home landscaping their service a apartment complexes is not the same. They've been coming here for the past 5 years or so and do not clean up the mess of massive clippings left behind from underneath the mowers. They've left chicken bones from lunch laying under trees where dogs get to them and have broken lawn ornaments three times. The biggest gripe are the mower clippings. The sidewalk clippings they blow away but the rest is left behind. We have quite a few dogs that eat grass. With the chemical treatments added to this, it's absolutely insane they don't take the time to rake up what's left. As for landscaping, they trim the edges. They don't trim tress unless asked, they don't remove dead limbs or plants unless asked. No, not happy with their service at all. The landscapers we had before them were great. I guess when you go with a cheaper company, that's what you get. Rant over. read more

I contacted Basnight to request an estimate. I was finally contacted back about a week later by Christian Basnight via email. I provided Mr. Basnight with what I needed an estimate on. Here we are 3 weeks later and they still haven't bothered to send me a quote. I sent a follow up email to Christian 2 weeks ago and he hasn't even had the decency to reply. Lousy customer service. I will take my business elsewhere. read more

This is the absolute worst lawn service I have ever seen in my life. I'm not sure where they've managed to find an entire crew of people who have no earthly idea how to perform a task that the average 9 year old is decently good at, but they've managed it. Not only are they excellent at leaving large swathes of grass completely uncut, they're also great at digging up the lawn with their heavy machinery and creating huge mud puddles, as well as damaging personal property in the form of destroying siding, fencing, and cars. They somehow manage to spread the performance of their services out over three or four days, often in an order that makes absolutely no sense. For example, they will often spend hours walking and/or riding around the neighborhood with blowers blowing absolutely NOTHING while loudly talking on the phone or smoking cigarettes, and then come back the next day to mow. Day three is edging day. This is my favorite day because they dig up all of the dirt around everyone's driveway and porch, and then just leave it there for you to walk through and track into your house and car. I have witnessed them hitting residents' cars with their zero turn mowers on multiple occasions, which they just ride around the neighborhood like go-karts because they are too lazy to walk. I should clarify that ALL tasks, to include edging and blowing, are done from atop a zero turn mower because they are too lazy to walk. I have spoken to numerous people in the neighborhood who have to go behind the lawn crew to mow, edge, and blow their own yard after the crew has left because the job they did was so awful. Every time they come our porch and window screens are covered in dirt, grass clippings, and leaves, which we have to go clean up in order to not track it all over the house. I know this sounds like a first world problem, but we are paying these people to provide lawn service and cleanup, and all they are doing is creating more work for the homeowners. I am absolutely fine with doing all of this work myself, but NOT while also paying someone else to do it. read more

I have used Basnight Land and Lawn for multiple very large projects on my property, from hardscape to softscaping, irrigation and lighting the results have continually exceeded my already high expectations. When there have been a few routine issues with plantings not thriving they have always responded immediately and replaced those not growing well with new plants. On other occasions I have had damage done to my irrigation by other contractors on site and Basnight always responded the next day to make the necessary repairs - I never got put off because the repairs were minor. I have worked with other so called full service landscaping companies in the past and Basnight is the only one that really measures up. For the most part their crews are full time employees - not a pick-up detail of subs - and that makes a huge difference. Their designers I have worked with have been unbelievably well credentialed and superb at their craft. In every case the designers listened to my ideas and helped me get the very best possible results for my money. I am sold on these guys - truly! read more

Customer service professionals! We had to have our well and sprinkler system repaired and could not have picked a better company than Basnight. Because of a family health issue we were not always available to meet the crew when they came to our home. Kevin and the rest of his crew went out of their way to make sure that they did not disturb our sick family member, found the problem and fixed it and left the property in great shape. Poor customer service! Salesman took three weeks and multiple phone calls and e mails to get back to us with original estimate (he had promised we would hear back in 2-3 days). We tried multiple times to contact him. He said he had both e mail and voicemail problems. Office staff was less than cordial. Because they were a word of mouth referral, we got past that. We were ultimately scheduled for a significant landscape project with a date selected by Basknight and confirmed by their e mail. They did not show that day. My spouse and I arranged to be off work that day and after several hours of us calling them, we were told that they would not be coming due to rain and that we should have known that and should have gone to work. At one point the owner informed my wife that he would wait to talk to the man of the house. When we said we would cancel and work with another company, we were told that if that were the case, they would calculate a bill (extremely high) for providing us with an estimate. We rescheduled for the next week. The guys who showed up to do the work did a reasonable job with a couple of caveats. They forgot to put down Preen herbicide and weeds are now as bad as before. Landscaping lighting is very weak and components are cheap. They promised to return to upgrade lighting but never did. There was absolutely zero follow up from Basknight about whether we were in any way satisfied with the work. Our subsequent e mails were either unanswered or replied with a brush off. I'm not sure who had a five star experience with this company but would guess that review was entered by the owner or management. I would not do business with them again and would rather try any random guy with a truck, trailer and phone. read more

Had a good experience when we met our salesmen in late April and he told us our project might be finished by Memorial Day. We never heard anything, we called and the office representative said their were some delays with our paperwork but we would be on the schedule soon. They then told us we were scheduled for Mon & Tues June 16 & 17. We never received a call to confirm but I assumed they would be here today to start our project. When we called this morning they informed us we aren't on the schedule until next week. We'll believe it when we see the workers here. Everyone has been extremely apologetic and nice however the wait and lack of communication has been extremely frustrating. We passed up several companies who committed to a shorter time frame because of Basnight's reputation... Not sure that this was the right decision. read more

We had Basnight Land and Lawn out to our house last year to perform a spring clean up on our lawn at our home in Chick's Beach. Our experience throughout each step of the process was wonderful. We were able to schedule our appointment with ease and on the day of the project, the crew arrived on time, in uniform and ready to work. There were at least 5-6 men on site all day long working, and all were very kind and professional. My husband and I were very pleased with the finished product and we received compliments on the appearance of our lawn from neighbors and guests all summer long! I definitely recommend Basnight Land and Lawn to anyone in the Hampton Roads area. We plan to work with them again for our future lawn care and landscaping needs. read more

Robert met with us to discuss various options to beautifying our yard; his knowledge and good nature made the planning a very enjoyable experience. These folks maintain the lawn at my condo in Riverwalk. They have been doing a terrible job this summer, to the point where the grass is about a foot tall, and all they leave after comming to cut and trim is huge tire tracks. Repeated calls to them have left no result. Clearly they do not care about the quality of their work. read more

We were initially attracted to our development by the immaculately landscaped entrance and common areas - simply gorgeous and beautifully maintained throughout all seasons. When we needed work done at our home, we contact Basnight and have used them for several jobs. We've been satisfied with the price, the professionalism of the workers, and the follow up. I had landscaping done by Basnight in 2007; the work and customer service were excellent. As a result of that experience, I contacted them again recently to have more work done. This episode was much different. I worked with Christian and he came out and did a walk-around and came up with some plant suggestions that he thought would meet our needs. I appreciated his expertise, but ended up changing my mind about what I wanted in the gardens and he made all the revisions in the proposal without complaint. I received a proposal for the work, and despite feeling uncomfortable about non-itemized proposals, agreed to the work. Christian emailed me that the work would begin the week of 22-26 June. On 18 June, the installers showed up out of the blue with no advanced notice. I happened to be home and they had the plants, so we went ahead with installation. Some of the plants I had ordered were not available--again no advanced notice so I could consider replacements. My yard is full of golden Stella d'Oro plants and the new ones that arrived were a different yellow color. Otherwise, the installation went without a hitch and the team was very polite and professional. After the installation, I emailed Christian to tell him not to order the previously-unavailable plants and to request an adjusted invoice. I received no reply and two weeks later, received an invoice in the mail that had not been adjusted. I called Basnight and spoke to Kristin, whose tone conveyed either irritation or general brusqueness. She contacted Christian about an adjusted invoice and sent me an updated invoice. The updated invoice addressed plant materials, but not labor, so I had to call again. After this second call, I received the additional adjustment on the invoice for labor and plant warranty (notice the one year warranty on plant installations is not complimentary). So, overall, this experience was not what I expected from professionals who have been in the business this long. I am sorry to say that I will not be a repeat customer. read more

Signed up for their lawn service 2 and 1/2 years ago, and initially it was very good. However, about a year after they started maintaining our lawn, the service rep left the company, and the service went steadily downhill thereafter. The new rep didn't know anything about the sod that Basnight had installed (and which did not survive because it was not cut back properly), nor did he show any interest in standing by the promise to replace it. The grounds crew changed the shape of our shrubs without consulting with us. The office staff is rude & out of touch. They sent an incomplete estimate for fence work that lacked detail, and never responded to my request for specifics (e.g. material type, design, very basic stuff). When I called to say I am cancelling (written letter to follow), they said it needed to be a certified letter. Mind you, we don't pay by EFT, and the contract was not for any specified period, and we paid all bills on time, and we are cancelling at the end of a billing period to be fair. Stay away from these turkeys. read more
