Hello, Back in…read moreearly 2019 I was arrested and charged with 7 counts of 1st-degree (felony) residential burglary. The rather generic (uncaring) public defender was very eager to offer me a paper to sign, stating I would go to prison for 14 years due to the severity of the crime... He, like 99% of all public defenders, was not willing to fight for me and represent me accurately in this case. In fact, the public defender laughed in my face when I started to explain the circumstances of the situation. I got addicted to opioid pain medication when I needed to have my wisdom teeth pulled... and like always... the addiction progressively got worse... to the point where I started mixing numerous prescription medications, blacking out, and even having a couple of accidental overdoses. Xanax became my drug of choice and I was truly powerless over my addiction. All of this eventually led to the crime I committed... I was completely blacked out on Xanax and did not recall anything I did whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I woke up in jail not knowing what happened... the worst feeling of my life. This was my very first offense, I grew up in a great household with a great family, have always worked and paid my taxes, I was a college student with a good head on my shoulders... I was/am pretty much a normal person just like anybody you know. This incident truly was a 1-off. A complete anomaly. Out-of-character to the fullest. Now, I don't say this to absolve myself of responsibility for my actions. Although, to this day, I still don't remember everything that has happened that night (I do remember some of it now)... I truly feel very bad about the people I affected. I always think about how I would feel if my personal belongings were stolen from me and I definitely would not like it one bit. I understood the severity of what I did and knew that I needed to be held responsible for my actions but 14 years was not a reasonable punishment for what I did considering all the circumstances. I was not willing to sign away my life without trying to find someone that would represent me fairly... so I went lawyer hunting. My family spoke to NUMEROUS lawyers trying to find someone that was understanding of the situation and willing to truly fight for a punishment that was more reasonable considering all of the circumstances. After several lawyers, we finally came across Dr. Unger! Dr. Charles/Charlie really got to know my family and me personally to get a sense of the situation before he offered to take on my case... Once he felt that my situation a unique one (and he believed me) he agreed to represent me in court. He immediately got to work going above and beyond to secure all the necessary information, evaluations, hospital records, etc.... and started forming a case. Dr. Unger was truly professional in all of his efforts but the MOST IMPORTANT & INFLUENTIAL ASPECT of Dr. Unger was his vast network of personal relationships that he has with numerous courtrooms. He is very well known and well respected in the courtroom. I truly believe that without Dr. Unger I would still be sitting in prison today. I'm truly very sorry to the people I affected. I'm very happy that everyone got all of their items back and that nobody was hurt. I wish I could take back what I did... Overall, Dr. Unger successfully negotiated the prosecution to drop all of the charges (except 1 charge of felony residential burglary), 365 days in county jail, and 5 years of probation. I'm very blessed to have been represented by Dr. Unger. He truly was able to save my life. I'm now completely sober, married to my beautiful wife, and living a normal life. Initially it seemed as though I was going to get a great deal of help. Madeline is very sweet. She…read moremet with me immediately the next morning I called and signed on to my case. After that first entire month of working with her it was impossible to get in contact with her or her assistants. My texts were almost never answered and my calls were always sent to a full voicemail box. If I called back to back was the only way I would get a reply and it was because she was in court and needed me to stop calling. I was always respectful of her schedule and never tried to hassle her, but there was an extreme lack of communication between lawyer and client. I was in an accident that has damage that clearly shows that I was not at fault, I never had an adjuster come out and it is unfortunate that she gave up on my case so easily. Its as though my case did not matter to her and that could be because she had more "promising" cases on her roster. It just feels like not much effort was put towards my case and time was wasted. Now its about two months later and my damaged car is still sitting in an expensive garage with no adjuster ever coming to look at it. In addition to my circumstance worsening, upon her informing me she was relieving her offices of the case she told me that no claims were filed against me personally. Literally two days later I get a bill in the mail from the other insurance company. I am NOT saying this part is Madeline's fault, the misinformation just proves that she did not take my case seriously. My point is, if it was easy I wouldn't have sought out the assistance from a lawyer to handle my accident. I was in an accident alone and was hit by a car with multiple passengers. Who in addition were barbaric at the scene called friends to the scene to act as witnesses. I didn't feel like I had the knowledge to handle it myself but I had proof because of the damage left on my car. (Proof that was completely undermined and ignored.) I let Madeline know this and I still wasn't represented well. I needed a lawyer that would fight for me and I didn't get that service with this particular case. If your case is straight to the point and not tricky this may be the law office for you otherwise I would encourage you to search for someone that guarantees a true fight for you. Maybe even ask for examples for them to show their commitment because I initially felt safe with her willing to take the case, her work ethic towards mine just proved otherwise. This also could be because they work on a lean which means if you don't win the case there are no fees. So if its serious it might be worth paying someone upfront to believe in your case.
