This sandwich shop and cafe, underneath Wood Green's sprawling Shopping City (apparently…read moreshortlisted as one of the UK's ugliest buildings) should win some kind of award for use of mirrors. A massive one on the back wall of the cafe makes the tiny space look vast, and removes any risk of claustrophobia. I use this cafe occasionally when running the gauntlet of the Wood Green Shopping Trip. Their sandwiches are freshly made, generously filled, and pretty tasty. They also do pressed panini and toasted club-style sandwiches, and you can choose to upgrade to a baguette or ciabatta for a few pence more. Drinkwise, they sell all the usual cans, plus do a decent Cappuccino which, to my chops, has the edge over Costa's (next door - and strangely smelling of weed every time I walk past.) There's an ice-cream booth at the front of Breakbar that does a brisk trade, but I've not sampled it yet. Ideal for a takeaway sarnie, baguette or ciabatta, or a good place to dive in for a quick lunch-cum-escape from the scrum outside.

What a way to experience afternoon tea! Since being in…read moreLondon I had to try afternoon tea and found this themed spot. The service was excellent and at any point we did not feel rushed. The welcoming was warm and even the welcome drink was Cheshire cat inspired. They really lean into the Alice in Wonderland theme from the plates, the teacups and even the tea names. The "Alice" tea was my personal favourite and it went fantastic with the richness of the sweets. The server explained everything perfectly in regards to what is on the tower and what type of sandwiches are on the plates. Keep in mind you can always get additional items if you go through the scones to fast let's say. The scones are made in house and it sure tasted it. Just a fun side note for my fellow non UK tourists, that apparently if there is no milk added it's not truly considered "tea." So add that milk! The indoor scene was also welcoming and contributed to a very relaxing atmosphere. There is a pond where the tables surround it and I found it went so well with the theme. When I'm back I will be visiting this place again.

They keep all their blends in cups at the counter, so the best way to choose is to follow your nose. And the staff know their stuff, too, and can not only list all of the ingredients of each tea but can recommend something to suit your mood. They also serve cakes and sandwiches. The decor's nice and simple, white-washed brick, tile-topped tables and pastel upholstery. They had rock tunes playing just loud enough to be identified but not so loud that you can't have a conversation. If they get free wi-fi, I'll never leave.

The jury is out on Granier. I love my bread, and a new baker on Portobello Road actually selling…read moreloaves of bread is a good thing in principle - beats Greggs. Just not sure about the garish decor - it's more reminiscent of bakery chains found in German train stations than an independent artisan baker. OK, so first impressions on actually walking in is that this must be an Eastern European chain. I duly opted for a loaf of the Russian bread. £2.90 for a small loaf of rye bread seems to be the going rate for the area, and the bread is actually quite tasty - a proper "schwarzbrot"! The cakes were another matter, I opted for a small slice of apple cake which was quite horrible. I've since done a little bit of online research and was very surprised to learn that Granier is a Spanish franchise company. Portobello Road actually has a lot of Spanish and Portuguese history but Granier doesn't come across as authentic in the way that Garcias a few blocks down the road does. I will return for more bread but avoid the sweet temptations from now on. Takeaway only for me, too, as the decor just doesn't do it for me.
