A star in Myddleton Road…read more "People here make good cocktails" said my wife. I agreed wholeheartedly as I sipped my Lord Palmerston (Espresso, Bourbon, Bailey's and Milk). The step, an island in Myddleton road, is a stone's throw from Bowes park train station. Myddleton Road has some interesting shops that somehow still keep going. There is great potential here and should the community of businesses organise better, and involve the local community, it could truly take off. The atmosphere inside is pleasant. It is generally full of locals enjoying the excellent food and drinks. Inside is full of a n odd assortment of tables and chairs. The lighting is a hodge podge of lamps, minor chandeliers and spot lights, parts of the wall are brick and the other issues bucolic wallpaper adorned with impressive paintings of roosters. Somehow it works and makes you feel quite chilled. The music, a mixture of funk and jazz, helps a lot. The selection of food is limited but having eaten the burger, fries/wedges (sweet potato and potato), scotch egg and the apple and berry crumble, I have been impressed. Today I ate the scotch egg. They managed to keep the yolk runny and the suasage meat was flavoured with herbs. I devovered it with gusto. This is the third time I have been here and every single time I have been impressed with the food. The burger by the way was pink in the middle and made perfectly. The juices flowed both from the beef as well as my mouth. They have a deal for a burger and beer or wine for £10 between 6 and 7. I recommend it. Let me just say that I have probably had nearly every single cocktail but one, the aperol or campari Spritz, and each has been well mixed. Each single time the mixologist has been different so I am blown away by the consistency. One last word on the staff who are always pleasant. I haven't had the nerve yet to strike up a conversation but am sure that it would be good. I thank the staff here for keeping this place going and doing such a marvelous job.

The garden is lovely too... a dearth of local boozers adds value but this place is a good fit for me and the range of events excellent! Update: finally made it in here for food and was suitably impressed with the small menu. My mum and I shared the spring salad and stuffed courgette. The courgette was good but the salad blew me away.. each mouthful was a combo of great textures and different flavours all creating a party on the palate.. or plate. Go there peeps! But book. It's a local gem and I'm heading back there for a live music nights soon!

Looking to get away from the city smoke and city life? Happy hippy? or just running away from life…read moreitself (even if its just for a bit) this is a sanctuary enclosed by tress, green and Highgate woods. This cafe brings you back into the wild, back to nature and the tube stop is about 10 minutes away! The cabin is a homely, welcoming place were you can enjoy true and only vegetarian food, organic and delicious. Their dishes include pasta bakes, curries and shepherd's pie, soups and pate and yummy desserts. Whenever possible some of the ingredients come from the garden just outside! it doesn't get more organic than that! Seating out in the veranda, even when it's raining, is very romantic and intimate. And to top it all off power is supplied via a solar panel. The cabin can also be hired out for parties (children and adults) and meetings, and we had a blast in our offices Christmas party, the owner is a lovely guy that lives there and joined in the fun.

Think composing committees, weekend gardening volunteers, conservation talks, and as many solar panels as there are exposed wood panels. The inside of this cabin-style café is straight out of an Abe Lincoln biography and there's a large patio outside that cries for a few rocking chairs, a porch swing and a Willie Nelson cameo. The menu consisted of veggie favourites, mouth-watering cakes (although it would have been nice to have a gluten-free option or two,) and coffee/tea. Loads of the dishes noted ingredients that were grown on site in the volunteer run garden. Mmmm... crunchy goodness! No matter how far your hippy scale leans, it's rare in a place as big as London to feel completely isolated. If you're ever in the market, Queen's Wood Café is your spot.
